This book is an autobiography of a man who had over 50 mostly major PTSD events in his life. It recounts the trials, struggles, and lessons learned over a life span of 67 years. It recalls his childhood, time as lifesaver, police diver, police driving instructor, member of SWOS, professional NRL footballer, running Police Citizens Youth Clubs (PCYC), Security Manager of the world renowned Porgera Gold Mine in PNG and world record holder of going around Australia in under 10 days on a motorcycle. The events accounted whilst a police diver as well as a Highway Patrol Officer includes plane crashes, train accidents, body recoveries and numerous fatal road accidents, some of which are major historic events in Australian history. It also includes native raids, murders, abuse and many more traumatic events while working in PNG. Some of the accounts are captivating and others highly emotional. His life and determination to succeed was mostly driven as a result of having been sexually abused over many years at the hand of his tutor as a child. It is a true Australian story and displays considerable endurance and survival skills.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

I was mostly on duty alone during the week, so to help share the responsibility on this particular day, I decided to call a mate who was a member of the Surf Club and happened to be on holidays. He came down straight away. I decided to take first watch on the longboard about 100m out past the swimmers closer to the first reef. I was out there for about an hour and a half and was starting to nod off a bit in the sun when I felt the right side of the board lift. I opened my eyes to find a massive fin running alongside my board about fifteen centimeters from my face.

Getting up onto my knees, I gave the shark alarm signal with my arms. Luckily, my mate was alert and put out the shark alarm for all swimmers. That left me in the middle of Toowoon Bay, by myself with this fairly big man-eater circling around me on my longboard!

I considered myself to be quite proficient on the longboard and used to do quite well in the surf carnivals. I also fished from a longboard quite regularly amongst the smaller reef sharks with no worries; but I found something out that day that I have remembered my whole life, something which may have kept me in good stead in later life: when you are in a very dangerous position and a little nervous, you sometimes do things that you normally would not do. In this case, I lost my balance and fell off!

My mate said to me later that I was back on that longboard so quick he was certain I had never even got wet! Eventually, a surf boat from The Entrance came around the headland and chased the shark out past the reef. It felt like a three-hour wait, but my mate assured me it was only fifteen minutes.

When I finally got back onto solid ground, my mate and a group of spectators came up and asked me why I’d fallen off the board. I told them that I was trying to get the shark’s attention so it would give my mate more time to clear the beach. I don’t think they believed me, though, because as I walked away, they called after me, “Sure Graham, sure!” I asked the fisherman why the shark had run up against my board and he replied that sharks do that sometimes, to scratch the barnacles off their backs. Apparently, they do this to stationary boats as well. I stored that little gem of information away for future reference, too. It was just my luck to get a big shark with an itch!

Thus, my first experience with a big shark was over, but it was not to be my last.
