The word cancer scared me so much that I could not think clearly. The surgeon patiently explained everything in great detail, and I listened to him, but I could not understand all the medical terminology. I was in a very disturbed and confused state of mind during the whole conversation. Tears were running down my face, and I could not stop crying. I did not know much about cancer except that I should be terrified of it. At the age of thirty-seven the life I knew was falling apart. I was overloaded with fear and uncertainty. Paul looked both blank and confused. I had a feeling he did not even comprehend how serious this was and what this diagnosis meant to our family and our children. I remember looking at my children through my tears — my daughter was six, my son was three — thinking, Who will raise them?
