Excerpt from Rod Marsden’s “Hearts Rule”
Priestess Helga had just finished her review of the boys she had been tasked to evaluate. Thirteen were on the cusp and could either become knights or mavericks. She was wondering what to do about them when Priestess May approached her. “You have boys on the cusp, too?” she asked.
“Yes.” Priestess Helga sighed. “I’ll have to think hard about what to do with each of them. I wouldn’t want any child to be condemned to fight dragons when they should be running a business somewhere.”
“Most of those on the cusp we make into mavericks will eventually become knights anyway,” offered Priestess May, “so what we do with them here doesn’t really matter.”
“I suppose you’re right. Suppose these boys are on the cusp and find they can’t handle the responsibilities of being even a minor maverick. In that case, they will, sooner rather than later, be downgraded to knight status.” Priestess Helga had been involved in enough of these evaluations over the years to know this to be true.
“Some of us priestesses have gotten together to make figuring out what to do with those on the cusp more fun." Priestess May smiled a thin smile. "It's a card game. Aces high. A royal flush of hearts wins every time. Are you in?"
“Gambling for money is against the law.” Priestess Helga was firm on this.
“Oh, we don’t play for money,” said Priestess May. “We play for the lives of the boys on the cusp.”

Barbara lives near Phila., PA, retired from her job as a respiratory therapist. Nowadays, she chases Mylar balloons at the supermarket, enjoys a fright flick, or works on horror and science fiction tales. Many of her short stories have appeared in numerous small press magazines. She’s been editor of Night to Dawn Magazine since 2004.
