GENRE: Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Erin is desperate to save Gerry from shadowy forces that would do anything to prevent him from fulfilling the prophecy. But when she arrives, he’s with another woman and the worst thing is it’s Tina, his former partner at the FBI.
Can she convince him the threat is real, and not just to him, but Mary his young daughter.
Halfway around the world ominous figures hiding in the night plan the unthinkable and Gerry is the only one that can stop them. The threat is genuine but will he believe her? Will he believe in the prophecy?
Erin must face her own past, a past she thought was over. It opens old wounds that send her careening on a path of destruction. Can she overcome them in time to save Gerry or will she lose everything because of a deep-rooted hurt that can’t be healed?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

“How am I a threat? I didn’t even know about any of this.” Gerry turned his palms upward in his lap.

“First, he knows of you and found you, the reason we had to flee, but he has set himself up as the one to fulfill the prophecy. It’s simple, there can’t be anyone to threaten his position.”

“So, what, we’re going to just meet with him and tell him I’m not who he thinks I am?”

“It’s more complicated than that.” Erin looked over her shoulder at Mary, already asleep despite her claim, curled up in the large tan leather seat. She looked back at Gerry. “You already have a huge base of supporters, and he can’t have that. He wants complete control.”

“But...”

“But there’s even more. He wants to bring us out of the shadows of night and enslave humanity. He’s perverted the prophecy. His idea of saving our race is to destroy humanity, which would ultimately destroy us. The true savior will save us from destruction, his destruction.”

Gerry blew through his teeth, making a small whistling noise. “So what you’re saying is we have to find this guy and destroy him before he kills me?”

GUEST POST:

Paper or screen? Which medium is more effective in conveying your message?

I’m an avid ebook reader. I find when I read an ebook there are certain things I like, and in my first two books I incorporated those things. Before I get into that, let me explain why I love ebooks. First, I can take them anywhere. They fit on my phone; I don’t have to drag a big book along which I would invariably lose. I can fit a scene or chapter in while I’m waiting at the doctor's office or on my lunch break. Really, just any time I want.

So what makes an ebook more readable in that format than paper? For me, it’s shorter scenes and shorter chapters. I hate to stop reading in the middle of a scene, but when reading on my phone or tablet, I’m usually not sitting at home where I can read for an hour or two. It’s somewhere I’m just trying to fit something in quick. With shorter scenes, I can read to the scene break and then get back to whatever I’m doing.

Keeping scenes shorter is a challenge. One thing I’ve noticed about traditionally published authors that are aiming for the hardback/paperback audience is that they spend paragraphs and paragraphs on needless descriptions. Sure it’s nice to know Sally is wearing a red dress, but if that doesn’t impact the scene, and they have already established that Sally always wears a dress, why spend time on that every time she enters a scene.

But if Sally always wears a baggy t-shirt and oversize sweatpants all the time, and in the new scene she’s wearing a lime green dress that’s blowing against her legs, that’s worth mentioning. It adds interest, why is she wearing a dress, that’s not normal for her. Why lime green, does she have poor taste or is she a free spirit that likes to do her own thing? Also, it’s blowing against her legs. She’s outside and there’s a breeze. To me all of that is useful, and I’ll take the time to add that to a scene, but not to describe something that has already been established. Also, it provides a lot of information in a compact size. No need to spend time talking about every detail. It’s enough to convey the information and allow the reader to imagine it.

I’ve even written short four or five paragraph scenes. In a printed book this might only be a page or even half a page, and you wouldn’t normally see that. But in an ebook there are probably four or five swipes left. Just enough for a quick break between doing something else.

As an avid ebook reader, and with all the media hype about readers moving away from physical books, I’ve been surprised to find about 40% of my sales are from paperbacks. While still keeping in mind the ease of writing shorter scenes and chapters to make the ebook experience easier, in my third and fourth, yet to be published book, I’ve begun to steer away from this. For example, my second book, Beverly Hills Torture, was thirty-four chapters. When my current book Moscow Nights is twenty-six and it’s actually longer. I’m trying to find a happy medium between both experiences. Something that works well as an ebook and something that’s more traditional for paperbacks.

As far as which format I would prefer readers to buy, it’s ultimately up to them. Whatever their preference is. I just want to bring something to them that’s interesting and enjoyable. How they read it is their choice.

AUTHOR BIO:

I love a good paranormal read, something about the un-dead haunts the fringes of my mind. Mix in romance, love, loss, and you have a great story.

I voraciously read everything, fiction, and non-fiction but always find myself turning back to the darker stories. I’ve always wanted to write and the dream became a reality with Capital Thirst, and the remainder of the Erin Kingsly novels.

I spend most of my days designing and building websites, but my free time is devoted to my wife, family, and cats. Yes three grown children and three cats. Things can be hectic.

For fun you might find me driving winding roads with the top down or out photographing nature.
