Danny O’Rourke—or, as some dared to call him, “Fat” Danny O’Rourke, went on record boasting that he would strike Munchk out on four pitches. At first, he claimed that he would require only three pitches to send her back to the dugout but then amended the claim, having decided that he would waste the first pitch by firing it right under Munchk’s chin—a glaring reminder that she was a girl playing a man’s game and that she didn’t belong. Well, as they say, it’s a dog-eat-dog world; and, from the traditionalists to the groundbreakers and all those in-between, everyone feels they have to make a statement or show the world they have something to prove.
Munchk went about the business of additional landscaping at home plate, focusing mainly on deepening the gully into which she had planted her back foot. Then she gave the plate a good thump with the bat head, before re-cocking the lumber between her right shoulder and ear. Again, I went into my wind-up. Munchk re-crinkled her nose and re-narrowed her eyes. I never saw such a look of determination.
I didn’t do much pitching in my ball playing days; mostly, I played first base but knew the proper mechanics of pitching. I went into my leg-kick, remembering to keep my back straight. Next, I opened my hips and squared my body to home plate or dish as some like to call it nowadays. I pushed off the pitching rubber and planted my front foot with my toe pointed toward the plate. What followed was my arm whipping forward. The ball felt good rolling off my fingertips; I was empowered, in control. I watched as the round, white projectile went tailing in on Munchk’s hands, and with a touch more velocity than I had intended. The speed and location notwithstanding, with surprising adroitness, Munchk managed to clear her hips, draw in her hands, and whip the bat’s barrel through the inner half of the strike zone. She did this with alarming quickness and, in the process, made ringing contact. Nothing like the crack of a bat! The ball traveled on a line to where, if a shortstop had been well positioned, it would have been caught. But what was more important, Munchk was all over a pitch that should have been too difficult for someone with limited experience to handle; and not only did she hit it but she hit it solidly. No siree, there would be no teetering on stilts for Munchk; she would skate with the agility and tenacity of a roller derby pro! Why would I have expected anything less?
