EXCERPT THREE:
Rosalie
huffed but shuffled around him. “Excuse me, Sir Montgomerie.”
“It’s
just Domhnall.” Shame skittered to the forefront of his mind. He lived a
privileged life, hardly understanding the commoner, try as he might by pacing
the streets afoot. In his mind, all people were equal, though society and
nobles held other opinions of the lesser born. Not him. Not if he became laird.
When. He sighed. When he became laird. Despite his parents’ noble upbringing,
they celebrated every man, woman, and child’s God-given gifts. All should have
opportunity. Here, men and women were treated fairly, as fair as they could get
with the demanding barons and the king.
He
was trying hard to help a woman who maybe didn’t want his help. When would he
learn he could only help others so much?
Burned.
Dead.
He
blinked away that pain. Why now? Why remember that awful memory? He’d only been
a lad himself at the time. He hadn’t understood the power that rested in his
visions. He swallowed.
“Here.”
He grabbed a crate from her, his hand accidentally brushing hers. A cool rush
traveled up his fingers to his elbow. His blood pressure dipped, darkness
luring him. No, he chided. Blazes, no! He commanded the vision to relent. The
black curtain crossing his eyes quickly dissipated as blood flowed to his
fingers. His extremities instantly warmed.
What
was that?
Had
he successfully halted a vision midstream? It had been years—years!—since his
last true vision, if he didn’t count the strange man’s reappearance this week
and Venora’s chilling words. Och, plus the misstep with that drunkard in
Edinburgh a month ago.
He
picked up another crate, handed it to her, deliberately touching her fingers,
testing the radical idea. Heart in throat. Bold. So bold. Nothing. Nothing but
an attraction to the golden-haired lass welled within him. No vision. Only
interest. Only…
He
wanted to try again. And again. Too bold. Rein it in, Domhnall.
“Wh-what’s
your name? Uh, family name, I mean?” He coughed to mask his discomfort.
She
shook her head whilst accepting his help and blew a winded breath. “Why does it
matter? I’m not associated with any clans. My name is just a name. I’m not the
one hiding behind a family name, Domhnall Montgomerie.”
“But
it is your name.” Did she hail from the isles? Was she an Ancient?
She
narrowed her eyes but softened the glower on her
face with his gentle words. “Threston. Rosalie Threston, and you’ve met Oswell.
Nelda is in Edinburgh keeping the shop with the aid of our neighbor, the
herbalist.”
“You’ve
no other kin?” He kicked at the ground, cursing his tongue. He loaded the crate
with the cats into the cart. “I-I mean, parents, siblings?” Husband?
She
rushed to the cat crate. “Let me.” She cooed and hushed the yowling beasties.
“Duo, Trēs, there, there.”
“Two
and three?”
Her
cheeks flushed. Stitches, he was embarrassing her when all he wanted was to
find a common ground. She liked cats. He liked cats. He was a Seer. She was—
“Yes,
what of it?”
“Is
there a ‘one’?” He recalled his Latin teachings at Dryburgh Abbey with the priests.
Where had Rosalie heard or studied Latin? In Mass?
“Afraid
not. Una died three years ago. Quattuor is in Edinburgh with my aunt.”
He
smiled, pleasure expanding in his chest. “You like Latin?”
She
shrugged. “I like numbers. I can’t read words, but numbers I understand well. I
saw a tool at the engraver’s in the marketplace. An abacus. Have you heard of
it?” Interest replaced her glower.

MY BOOK REVIEW:
This book is an interesting, intriguing, exciting, adventurous, historical
romance read with a dash of fantasy and paranormal elements!!!
I
have had the fortunate opportunity of hosting Jean several times over the many
years on my blog. However, for some reason
this was the first time that I had the pleasure of reading and reviewing one of
her books. When I saw the chance to read
her latest book, “A Hundred Lies,” I jumped right on the first open tour
date lol!!!
So,
even though “A Hundred Lies,” is Book Three in Grant’s Book Trilogy I
was still able to easily dive right in without fumbling around or getting lost
and confused about what was going on in the story. Don’t get me wrong there is strong story line
and character overlap. However, I truly feel
the author provided a smooth transition for book three to start at. Grant included just enough details for new
series readers to be able to follow along, but not too much overwhelmingly
repeated details that readers who have been reading since book one don’t feel
annoyed or bogged down. I hate when I binge
watch TV shows and they recap the previous episode for the first couple minutes
of the next episode. I literally had just
watched it lol!! I don’t need a recap!! I know, I know, it was created to help people
remember what happened since the episodes originally aired a week apart. But when you binge watch like two or three
seasons back-to-back those “previously on last week’s episode” scenes
get so annoying if you can’t skip past them.
Thankfully,
Grant's book series transition writings are nothing like those irritating recap
episode transitions. Grant uses a
meticulous amount of details to set the scene for new readers joining mid-series. She quickly engages them and immerses them
into the story world she has created since page one in book one. While at the same time Grant targets her regular
readers who have been following the series since day one by continuing to reveal
new things about the characters and the world she created. She focuses on driving both her main and
secondary characters while pushing them to grow, improve, evolve, and reach
their character arc journey. In
addition, Grant keeps upping the stakes with each book keeping the readers on
their toes and glued to the pages. I
really like that Grant has found a way to appeal to and please both types of
readers.
I liked that the author used old language and terminology in her
writings as it made the story feel more time-period accurate.
I loved the amount of historical content and precision. It is clear the author did a thorough and
extensive amount of research while constructing this book. That plus her own unique advantage spending
time in Scotland created reliable and credible details throughout the story
line.
I really enjoyed and appreciated the author’s depth of research
that was thoroughly highlighted in this book.
I liked that she kept the material educational, but not overpowering as
it was easily to grasp and follow.
I enjoyed the story line and felt engaged in the story structure
and plot points. The writing was steady
and easily flowed.
I
really liked that this book had a clean, tidy, HEA ending. There were no cliffhangers or unexplained
situations or missing information or strings still hanging. Everything was neatly finished and tied up
with a bow – and in a good way. I don’t
like my books ending with more questions than answers. And from what I’ve gathered it seems like
Grant ended each book in the series with satisfying endings. Also, I really liked that she wrote each book
as a standalone. I LOVE book
series!!! But sometimes I come across
book series where books one, two, four, and five sound great!! But book three sounded boring or they were
going to hurt an animal and so I didn’t want to read it. However, many authors write their book series
where you really can’t miss out on passing up one or two of the books without
getting lost or too far behind in the series timeline. So, I really appreciate Grant catering to the
reader by allowing them to still enjoy the benefits of a book series – same great
characters, cute town, story lines, etc. but without having to commit to
reading every book if for some reason it didn’t appeal to them. Or if the reader wanted to read the books out
of order.
There are some predictable scenes. However, there are still a few very
unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!
This book is Book Three in A Hundred Kisses Trilogy Book
Series. It can be read as a
standalone. Although I had not previously
read either of the two books in this series beforehand, I did not get lost or
confused while reading this book.
However, there are strong and significant character and story line
overlaps so it may be more enjoyable to start with book one to get the full
benefits of this book series!
All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend
it! I think all historical romance
readers and fantasy/paranormal fans will like this book too – and this book
series! So, add it to your TBR List and
get to reading - you won't be disappointed!
