GENRE: Science Fiction Romance

BLURB:

To whom does Lela owe her loyalty:  her own people or the Thelonian Lord who loves her?

EXCERPT TWO:

When the animals were fed, she ate a solitary, uneasy dinner while the sun fell. She had just finished when there was a chime at the still-locked door. For the first time, she took the precaution of checking the view screen before answering and sucked in her breath in shock at what—at who—she saw.

It was Roger. Roger, Governor of their Colony, at her door. Not the immaculate, articulate Roger she had always seen and he was not alone. She buzzed the door open at once.

“What is it?” she blurted. This Roger was disheveled, red-eyed, sweat- and soot- stained and cradling a toddler baby against his chest.

“May I come in?”

“Of course, of course.” Flustered, she fell back to admit him, then instinctively reached to touch the sleeping infant. “What...”

Roger smiled, a twisted smile that looked suspiciously close to weeping. “You wanted a baby, I believe?”

GUEST POST:

Everyone loves a hero!  Tell us all about this genuine character and the inspiration behind their development.

In the course of the three books that comprise the “Scion” series, I learned more about my male protagonist than I thought I could possibly know.

Caius first came to me as an image.  Picture a humanoid, very handsome guy BUT he is six and a half feet tall with a frizzy mane of electrified-looking hair and eyes that can turn red when he’s angry.  I mean, like a light bulb.  Pretty scary dude, huh?

But...not actually.  Caius is born into an aristocratic family on the planet Thelona.  He is cultured.  He is highly educated.  And when provoked he is a complete lunatic.  That’s my guy.

Above all, and despite the temper, Caius is decent and that’s a substantial drawback in a culture where vicious political intrigue, assassination and slavery are every day realities.  A decent man confronting such forces is bound to run into trouble and he does.

Returning to the planet from a stint in the Mercenary Corps, he gives into the impulse to buy Lela on the slave market.  She is in dire shape and is basically a rescue, but despite her defects or—more likely—because of them, she grows to mean a great deal to him.  When he attempts to use her presence to put off political marriage, though, he endangers both their lives.  The sensible solution would be to sell her.  But Caius has never been sensible.

You are welcome to read the rest and I hope you will!

AUTHOR BIO:

Fantasy poetry driven by myths and legends has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I was published in poetry before catching the romance writing bug. I bring that background to my writing along with a lifelong addiction to horses, an 18-year career in various areas of psychiatric social services and many trips to Ireland, where I nurture my muse. My published works range from contemporary fantasy romance to fantasy historical, futuristic, science fiction and historical romance. Currently I live in rural Pennsylvania with a "motley crew" of rescue animals. You can see my books at www.miriamnewman.com.

  4. I'll make this a take-two question. My two great loves are science fiction and historical novels--one tells you where we have been, the other where we are going. One science fiction author I thoroughly enjoy is C.J. Cherryh. For historical novels, anything by Philippa Gregory is an auto-buy for me.

  6. Thank you, everyone, for visiting. I have loved writing this science fiction trilogy. My editor has just sent me final edits for the next book, Warlord, an ancient times romance, and I am really excited about this one. Perhaps I will see some of you again when it is released! I hope so. Thanks again, and thanks to Ally for hosting me on her beautiful blog.

    1. Thank you, Mya. By the time we got to Book III, my cover artist and I agreed the female protagonist had earned a cover of her own!
