April
has such a gentle ring to it. The astilbe is coming through, with its leaves
like red feathers sitting below last year's dead stems; the rhubarb is coming
through nicely and the yellow strawberry has a flower on it. The roses at the
back of the border are looking healthy and everything is going upwards and
outwards. There is a dainty sweetness to the front of the border with grape
hyacinths seeming as if they would bloom forever, daffodils spreading their
sunshine everywhere and tulips injecting dramatic colour amongst the softer
spring shades.

Putting Yourself on a Page: What It’s Like to Share Your Most
Personal Words with the World
It
took some time for me to accept that my own little world would be of interest
to those who don’t know me. Social media illustrates that young and old alike
are interested in the lives of others. Okay, so some want to destroy them, but
there are not many who are that malicious, people generally care. They have to
go out of their way to be destructive. Naturally, they are connected, one human
being to another. So maybe someone would want to read my memories of growing up
in rural Lincolnshire in the fifties and sixties. To begin with, I shared a
monthly blog dealing with aspects of my childhood. It was well received and so
the blogs were put together with another two unpublished blogs. The whole was
edited into book form and published as Child of the Isle. (The Isle is
the Isle of Axholme - an area of fenland which originally sat within a four
river boundary.) The book proved successful - particularly with those who knew
the area. When I realised that, I hoped they would feel empowered to share
their own memories.
So would it be safe to share my notions with the world? Not just
memories, but my thoughts, my personal words, my passion for nature?
I started to think that maybe it would.
I have an agenda.
It is
my very dear wish to share what I know of the natural world in order to
connect, to inform and to encourage. My belief is that the world, as we know
it, cannot continue as our home and the home of our friends in wild places,
unless we engage more readily and with gratitude for what it is we have here. I
knew when I started writing Child of the Earth that the people who would
want to read it would already feel a connection with nature but then it occured
to me that much of what they were already seeing in print was depressing and
negatively presented. That’s not my style!
I
intended to put together my thoughts and experiences - the ones which had given
me so much joy - in order to share the pleasure, to provoke further thought and
to give hope - particularly through my absolute passion for sharing the natural
world with children.
So,
that being my objective, I simply had to get out there what it is that formed
me. There was no place for timidity or uncertainty. Neither is there a place
for arrogance!
I
don't know everything about nature - I never will - nor will I ever come close
to it. I believe I’m still developing and will always be in that wonderful
state of infancy where one wonders at every movement, every trill, every
fragrance, every vista.
If sharing myself in words can make the world more beloved and
cared for, then I’m definitely up for that!

AUTHOR BIO:
Susan grew
up in the Isle of Axholme, which inspired the Crowvus best-seller, Child of the
Isle. She has a deep love of nature which is apparent in all her writing from
the poems she has had published in various anthologies, to her 2020 release,
Child of the Earth.
Susan
released Rosie Jane and the Swodgerump as part of the John O’Groats Book
Festival. This story was written and inspired by raising her six children in
Orkney. After moving to England for a while, Susan finally returned to North
Scotland in 2009, and continues to write her monthly blogs, What’s It Like Up
There?
Her
latest book, Child of the Earth, is a nature companion, drawn from her own experiences
throughout her life. It provides a colourful telling of Susan’s encounters with
nature, told with a style which makes it accessible to all readers.
