GENRE: Vampire Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Vampires are real, existing alongside regular humans as a secret subspecies. The malevolent of their kind exploit their powers and immortality at the expense of their human counterparts. The Organization, a league of benevolent vampires headed up by the anonymous Mr. X, works covertly to keep this threat in check. Amber Ridley is the company’s top agent, unique to the team as the only human working alongside her vampire allies. She is an ‘Impervious’, a rare human with powers that can be used against the malevolent.
When Amber’s latest mission takes her back to the UK to work with her close companion Valentino, she meets his old colleague Hayden Knight. Hayden is infamous to Amber as the man who betrayed their organization and abandoned her friend Valentino in the past. She dislikes Hayden instantly, and his arrogant, cold demeanour does nothing to aid this.
Amber and Hayden are forced to work together on The Organization’s most important mission to date, and they must put aside their differences to take down the menace that threatens the very existence of their group. Amber must put her trust in Hayden, but is she impervious to love?
EXCERPT TWO:
Amber mirrored Vale’s posture. “Why is he here then? Why come back now?”
Just then, Hayden appeared from the doorway. “You could just ask me directly, you know.”
Amber turned to Hayden. He was dressed in tight-fitting black jeans and a black T-shirt. His muscular physique was very apparent, both from the look of his arms and also the ripples under his clothing. Amber could appreciate that he was extremely handsome, but there was a hardness to him that there wasn’t with Vale, along with an iciness to his blue eyes. Hayden had focused on Amber as he spoke, then he broke eye contact to move over to the coffee pot and pour himself a cup.
Amber still couldn’t muster any sympathy for him, and his aloof behavior did nothing to help. “Fine,” she said, watching him as he prepared his drink. “Why are you back with The Organization? What’s in it for you?”
Vale interjected, a warning tone in his voice. “Amber.”
Amber ignored him. “I want to know.”
Hayden brought his coffee over, not looking at either of them, and he took a seat at the other side of the table. He took a drink before finally lifting his gaze to meet hers. “I was promised something by Mr. X.”
“What?” Amber was quick to ask before Vale could stop her.
Hayden met Vale’s eyes. “I was promised a certain target.”
Amber scrutinized them both. A knowing look passed between the two men. Vale had realized who Hayden meant. Amber suspected she could also guess.
GUEST POST:
Fierce Female Lead Characters: How to Create Strong Role Models in Books
This is an issue that was important to me when I started to write romance, for a number of reasons. Firstly I feel that on the whole, strong female role models are under represented in society and this was something I was keen to contribute to changing in literature.
Secondly, when it came to romance, although I enjoyed this genre I felt relatively choosy about which books I would read. Stories that depicted a male character who wielded a lot of power over the female and who was portrayed as being more intelligent and accomplished than her really didn’t attract me. I found that a significant number of the medical romances I encountered were based on this premise of power imbalance and the females featured in them who did happen to be on an equal level in terms of status with the men tended to be depicted as cold and unfeeling. So I often chose not to read that variety of story, despite being medical myself. I wanted to read about female characters in romance who were strong and powerful, like the women I see in everyday life. I wanted them to walk on an equal footing with the male lead in terms of intellect and power. Although physical strength wasn’t the only aspect to this, cognitive power was very important to me too, I did feel that if men can be depicted as superheroes in literature and film, why cant women? If we are imagining a different reality, then why should the constraints of our universe apply to the women but not the men? This was why I wanted my female protagonist to have physical superpower in ‘Impervious’.
Thirdly, at times I could feel a little let down by female leads in romances. There were a lot of stories I enjoyed in literature and TV/film up until point that the female lead lost her integrity in my eyes. It didn’t gel with me when the woman would display behaviours such as openly neglecting family and friends in favour of her love interest. It alienated me even more so when she would put up with toxic behaviours from her male counterpart, condone them and perhaps even be portrayed as finding them attractive. I didn’t find these behaviours attractive in men, so why would she? Why would she be attracted to someone who she witnessed displaying cruel or callous behaviour?
When I decided to write my own romances these were themes I felt important to portray. Strong female leads with integrity, and men who are just as fierce and attractive because they value the women for their strength.
AUTHOR BIO:
Zoe lives in Edinburgh, Scotland with her husband and two children. A medic by day, she started writing in her spare time as a means to counter burn out and found that this was a balm for the soul.
She is a fan of the romantic genre and its ‘happy ever after’ ethos. A sharp contrast to what she can, at times, see in her day job. Zoe is keen for the female lead in romantic fiction to disabuse stereotypes and walk on an equal footing with her male counterparts. She prefers male leads who do not display signs of toxic masculinity and believes that positive masculinity is much more attractive to women and healthier for men.
    1. Hi Bernie! Unfortunately I haven't had time because I've still been going out to work, and actually doing more hours than usual due to my day job (I'm a doctor). I'm looking forward to having time to read again though! Hoping to finish the book I starting reading pre quarantine which is Katherine Johnson's autobiography "Reaching for the Moon".
