EXCERPT TWO:

As soon as her finger finished following the line of the eye, a bright flash illuminated the chamber for nothing more than the blip of a nanosecond, as if an electric bulb had exploded and gone out. John blinked back a sudden headache, wondering if he’d imagined the burst.

“Did you see that? So cool!” Sarah exclaimed.

John’s heart was in his throat. “Can we get outta here now?”

“So cool,” Sarah repeated, shaking her head. “I wish I had my phone to take a picture of this. Dad will love it!”

John tugged on Sarah’s shirt. “Can we please go now, Sarah? Please?” He could feel sweat on his forehead.

“Yes, fine,” Sarah said, pulling her arm away from his tugging. “This is a dead end, anyway. Let’s go.”

She marched off back to the corner and around it, John close behind. John could feel his chest loosening with every step, could almost taste the mountain air again. He plodded along behind her in the tunnel without looking up.

As soon as they were out of the cave, John smashed into the back of Sarah, who’d stopped suddenly.

“What the—” she muttered.

John didn’t smell the fresh mountain air. When he looked around his sister, expecting to see the scree slope and forest and the way back to the trail, instead he dropped his flashlight and his jaw at the same time.

He’d never seen anything like it.

GUEST POST:

Five Reasons You Should Read My Book

1.)  It will be fun. My two kids and I collaborated on THE EYE OF RA. That was how the book was born—just a fun side project to do with them as a creative bonding activity. Then it blossomed and grew and we received such positive feedback that I felt compelled to put it out into the world.

2.)  It may teach you something interesting. I am a sucker for interesting factoids, especially ones that leave room for imaginative storytelling to fill any mysterious gaps. Egyptian mythology and lore is ripe for such mental wanderings, but THE EYE OF RA is unique in that it doesn’t take the tack of the traditional ancient Egyptian narrative with mummies and glowing crystals and the like. The challenges thrown at John and Sarah in THE EYE OF RA are natural, physical, and emotional ones, with accurate bits of history dashed in for realism. But don’t that make you think the challenges aren’t fantastic... John and Sarah are pushed to their max.

3.)  It will foster discussions with your children. Besides the facts mentioned above, themes of relocation, sibling rivalry and bonding, and making friends are all touched on in the book. I enjoyed putting forth a scenario to my kids and then listening to their responses to how they think John and Sarah would react. Or vice versa, they posed to me situations and I tried to see how I could work them out. This type of role playing will be a fun activity to engage with your own children.

4.)  It will encourage your children to think outside their own world. Delving into ancient Egyptian culture was a fun side effect of this project. We took a look at how an ancient Egyptian family lived, what they ate (there’s a recipe at the back, spoiler alert!), how they dressed, how they lived and compared it to our own. Thousands of years may have passed and technology has flourished, but at the core the ancient Egyptians were people just like us. This is a fun topic to explore with children as they’re getting older and their brains are exploding with new ideas about the world.

5.)  It will be fun! I know this was the first answer too, but what’s the point of a good adventure story if it’s not FUN?!
