In Over Her Head:
Lights, Camera, Anxiety
by Krysten Lindsay Hager

GENRE: YA

BLURB:

Cecily feels like she has it all: great best friends, the beginnings of a career as a model/actress, and she’s dating her favorite singer, Andrew Holiday. Then Cecily’s best friend Lila begins to ditch her every time Lila’s boyfriend calls. Cecily feels lost, but she and Andrew begin connecting more and she’s never been in a relationship where she felt so understood. Andrew even begins to confide in her about his anxiety. Soon Cecily experiences her own anxiety on a magazine photo shoot, but she manages to impress the magazine staff. Just when it seems like all her dreams are coming true, everything comes crashing down when a photo of Andrew with another girl appears online. He swears nothing happened, but Cecily is crushed. She feels like she’s lost two of the people closest to her.

Was her perfect relationship real or was she in over her head?

EXCERPT THREE:

One day I had the career and the guy of my dreams. Then Danielle King came along. If people could be trusted, maybe it would have been okay, but they can’t. They suck. And now my dream relationship was gone and no one would ever know what had actually been in my grasp.

How can a person go from having a whole life with someone, and then it ends like you were never even together? No wonder people talk about how awful divorces are. That must hurt a million times more. Sure, I don’t have to see Andrew every day at school like I did Zach, but it seems like Andrew was everywhere. I went to the grocery store with my mom and they were playing one of his songs because he’s technically a local.

Andrew’s music was always what I listened to when I was sad. His heartache music got me through the worst times and now, not only could I not stand to listen to it, there was now the chance I could end up hearing music about our breakup. Actually, I didn’t know which was worse: the possibility he’d use our relationship as         inspiration for a song, or finding out I was barely a blip on his radar and not even warranting a mention.

What was I supposed to do with my life now?

GUEST POST:

My Favorite Scene in This Book…

One of my favorite scenes in In Over Her Head: Lights, Camera, Anxiety, is when Cecily is getting ready to go to her first magazine photo shoot. She feels so confident the night before as she just had a romantic dinner with her pop star boyfriend and, as she walks back into her hotel, she thinks to herself, “As I walked into the hotel, I felt a new air of confidence. Instead of just reading about someone going out with a pop star to some fabulous rooftop hotel restaurant and being in the big city, I was living it. This was my life and not some YA book heroine’s. Tomorrow I was off on a modeling shoot. I was living a dream and proving how I was ready for a big life. This was my destiny. I could do this.”

And then on the next page you see her wake up and reality smacks her clear across the face. ”My alarm went off and at the same time an alarm went off in my brain saying, no, I could not do this. What was I thinking? Me, model? That’s where people take photos of you for the sole purpose of other people looking at them, which encouraged judgement and evil comments. People don’t just keep those comments to themselves anymore. Oh no, they grab their phone or laptop or whatever device helps them spew out unhelpful and cruel comments on people’s appearances online for all the world to see. My stomach felt like spewing all over the nice hotel sheets I was wrapped in.  Why did I ever think I was up for this? Those strangers online would destroy me within seconds.”

I think we’ve all been there where we’re confident one moment and then that confidence wavers and we let those feelings of doubt creep in and take over. Who hasn’t gone into a situation they always thought they wanted more than anything and thought they could handle only to feel overwhelmed once you’re actually there? Cecily feels totally out of her element and becomes overwhelmed when she overhears the magazine people gossiping about a bigger name model, Scarlett. Cecily feels that if Scarlett, can’t win them over, then how could she? Then she overhears them questioning if she’s really qualified to be there, which something she has already worried about. Hello, imposter syndrome anyone?

I like this scene because even though all of this self-doubt and fear causes her to have anxiety, the other models talk her through it and she goes on to do the best job she can. Not only does she show up, but in doing her best she finds that even though she feels she can’t hold her own against the bigger name models, the magazine staff sees what she does bring to the table with her acting ability. Yes, the other girls are stunning and can pose, but Cecily brings her own unique style to the shoot and she winds up finding that will set her apart.

She walked in with fear and self-doubt, but came out even better because she stayed the course and used the talents she had. There’s so much realization and growth in this scene. You feel for Cecily and are inspired by her and I hope other readers will be inspired by her journey as well.
