The Secrets Between Us
by Katie Mettner

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Of three things I was certain...
The first?
Mercy was exquisite in the most devastatingly broken way.
The second?
I didn’t know how to love, but for the first time in my life, I wanted to try.
The third?
The secrets between us could tear us apart forever.
I wouldn’t let that happen.
EXCERPT ONE:
“I came by to apologize,” he said, relaxing back in the chair like he owned the place.
“For?” I asked, sitting across from him in the other club chair.
“For being rude the other night,” he answered. “I’ve found myself in a bit of a surly mood lately and I apologize if I took it out on you.”
I bit my lower lip and tipped my head to the right. “Same, actually. Truce?” I asked, sticking out my left hand.
He leaned forward and shook it, somewhat awkwardly. “Truce.”
“Great, how about a drink then?” I asked before I thought too hard about it.
“I could definitely use one,” he agreed. “What do you have?”
“Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, or Captain Morgan,” I answered instantly.
His brow went up. “Clearly, you like the boys. I guess I don’t have to worry about you being a lesbian.”
A smirk lifted one side of my lips. “I’m strictly dickly.” I stood and walked to the kitchen door. “Now, who will it be?”
“Jack and Coke?” he ordered, and I walked off to the kitchen nodding.
“Be right back,” I said over my shoulder.
Once alone in the kitchen I blew out a long, slow, unsteady breath. The fact that I had a man in my living room was unnerving. The fact that it was him was terrifying. And, strictly dickly? Did I say that?
GUEST POST:
Where Do You Find Inspiration?
Hello, thank you for hosting me and The Secrets Between Us on your blog today! My name is Katie Mettner and I live in Northern Wisconsin where I write from a little space overlooking the lake. Some might think I find inspiration there, and the truth is, most of my books involve a body of water to some degree. In fact, The Secrets Between Us takes place in a fishing camp in North Dakota where the lake plays a big part in the romance. But, while the water is a big part of my books, it is not where I find my inspiration. I find my inspiration at the grocery store, the movie theater, the mall, the hospital, the park, and online. I’m sure you’re wondering what I mean, so let me explain. My romances are always about everyday people who have disabilities that make finding love in an abled world that much harder; The Secrets Between Us is no different. My chosen subgenre of romance started when I wrote my first novel, Sugar’s Dance. I was a new amputee and the MC in that book is also one. When I hit publish on Sugar’s story … Interject! When I published Sugar’s Dance I just wanted copies for my family! I was so new to the self-publishing thing I didn’t even know other people could buy it if I published it on Amazon … Back to inspiration. It wasn’t until I had reader interaction after publishing Sugar’s Dance that I really grasped how desperate disabled people were to read realistic and touching romantic stories about ‘themselves.’ They wanted representation in a genre that often only highlighted the ‘pretty’ people. They wanted romances that didn’t feature JUST the rich, famous, and buff. They wanted romances with meat. Romances with pain, fear, elation, and learning to trust. That was nine years ago and I just finished my 42nd book!
My inspiration comes from talking to readers online who contact me and say, “Wow, that was the first book I’ve read about someone with spina bifida like mine.” Or “Would you write a romance about XYZ because I have it and I just want to read how you would tell my story.” I find my inspiration when I’m in the grocery store and see someone in a new prototype wheelchair, at the library talking to a little one who wears braces on both legs, or in a room full of other amputees who are talking about their day-to-day struggles. It is always in one of those places where inspiration will strike and a new story will play out in my mind. While the inspiration is there, these stories often require massive research and discussion with people who have that specific disability, in order to do the character justice. Like all writers, we have to do our homework once we get the idea!
I don’t want to confuse readers. My stories aren’t ‘inspirational’ in anyway, unless you choose to see them that way. All of my romances follow the same troupes as abled romances do, they just have the added facet of the fear and stigma that comes along with dating as a disabled person. For instance, in The Secrets Between Us, Mercy is afraid of what Hayes will do to her routine at the camp if she lowers her guard around him. He’s rich and powerful in the city and she runs a fishing camp in the middle of nowhere as a disabled woman. So while you have your billionaire CEO and everything that comes with a character who is sex on a stick, what you don’t see on the cover is the added layer of emotional turmoil. I try to make the reader wonder if this couple is going to be able to adapt and overcome in order for their love to survive.
What I hope is that along the way, readers will get an insight into the life of disabled people. I hope that when they finish one of my novels they understand that we’re just like them. We have the same hopes and dreams of finding love and happiness, even if our bodies don’t work the same way theirs do. I hope reading my novels reminds them to have a little bit more patience with the inconveniences that come with living in a world with disabled people, whether it’s waiting for them to cross the parking lot safely in their chair, their determination to do their own shopping or any other interaction that may impact the abled’s daily life. I also hope, at the end of a Katie Mettner novel, that they have fallen so in love with the characters that they no longer see the disability. I write for the moment when the reader feels that character’s heart quiet their fears, so they can take a chance on the love that was waiting for them all along.
