The Secrets Between Us
by Katie Mettner

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Of three things I was certain...

The first?

Mercy was exquisite in the most devastatingly broken way.

The second?

I didn’t know how to love, but for the first time in my life, I wanted to try.

The third?

The secrets between us could tear us apart forever.

I wouldn’t let that happen.

EXCERPT ONE:

“I came by to apologize,” he said, relaxing back in the chair like he owned the place.

“For?” I asked, sitting across from him in the other club chair.

“For being rude the other night,” he answered. “I’ve found myself in a bit of a surly mood lately and I apologize if I took it out on you.”

I bit my lower lip and tipped my head to the right. “Same, actually. Truce?” I asked, sticking out my left hand.

He leaned forward and shook it, somewhat awkwardly. “Truce.”

“Great, how about a drink then?” I asked before I thought too hard about it.

“I could definitely use one,” he agreed. “What do you have?”

“Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, or Captain Morgan,” I answered instantly.

His brow went up. “Clearly, you like the boys. I guess I don’t have to worry about you being a lesbian.”

A smirk lifted one side of my lips. “I’m strictly dickly.” I stood and walked to the kitchen door. “Now, who will it be?”

“Jack and Coke?” he ordered, and I walked off to the kitchen nodding.

“Be right back,” I said over my shoulder.

Once alone in the kitchen I blew out a long, slow, unsteady breath. The fact that I had a man in my living room was unnerving. The fact that it was him was terrifying. And, strictly dickly? Did I say that?

Where Do You Find Inspiration?

Hello, thank you for hosting me and The Secrets Between Us on your blog today! My name is Katie Mettner and I live in Northern Wisconsin where I write from a little space overlooking the lake. Some might think I find inspiration there, and the truth is, most of my books involve a body of water to some degree. In fact, The Secrets Between Us takes place in a fishing camp in North Dakota where the lake plays a big part in the romance. But, while the water is a big part of my books, it is not where I find my inspiration. I find my inspiration at the grocery store, the movie theater, the mall, the hospital, the park, and online. I’m sure you’re wondering what I mean, so let me explain. My romances are always about everyday people who have disabilities that make finding love in an abled world that much harder; The Secrets Between Us is no different. My chosen subgenre of romance started when I wrote my first novel, Sugar’s Dance. I was a new amputee and the MC in that book is also one. When I hit publish on Sugar’s story … Interject! When I published Sugar’s Dance I just wanted copies for my family! I was so new to the self-publishing thing I didn’t even know other people could buy it if I published it on Amazon … Back to inspiration. It wasn’t until I had reader interaction after publishing Sugar’s Dance that I really grasped how desperate disabled people were to read realistic and touching romantic stories about ‘themselves.’ They wanted representation in a genre that often only highlighted the ‘pretty’ people. They wanted romances that didn’t feature JUST the rich, famous, and buff. They wanted romances with meat. Romances with pain, fear, elation, and learning to trust. That was nine years ago and I just finished my 42nd book!

My inspiration comes from talking to readers online who contact me and say, “Wow, that was the first book I’ve read about someone with spina bifida like mine.” Or “Would you write a romance about XYZ because I have it and I just want to read how you would tell my story.” I find my inspiration when I’m in the grocery store and see someone in a new prototype wheelchair, at the library talking to a little one who wears braces on both legs, or in a room full of other amputees who are talking about their day-to-day struggles. It is always in one of those places where inspiration will strike and a new story will play out in my mind. While the inspiration is there, these stories often require massive research and discussion with people who have that specific disability, in order to do the character justice. Like all writers, we have to do our homework once we get the idea!

I don’t want to confuse readers. My stories aren’t ‘inspirational’ in anyway, unless you choose to see them that way. All of my romances follow the same troupes as abled romances do, they just have the added facet of the fear and stigma that comes along with dating as a disabled person. For instance, in The Secrets Between Us, Mercy is afraid of what Hayes will do to her routine at the camp if she lowers her guard around him. He’s rich and powerful in the city and she runs a fishing camp in the middle of nowhere as a disabled woman. So while you have your billionaire CEO and everything that comes with a character who is sex on a stick, what you don’t see on the cover is the added layer of emotional turmoil. I try to make the reader wonder if this couple is going to be able to adapt and overcome in order for their love to survive.

What I hope is that along the way, readers will get an insight into the life of disabled people. I hope that when they finish one of my novels they understand that we’re just like them. We have the same hopes and dreams of finding love and happiness, even if our bodies don’t work the same way theirs do. I hope reading my novels reminds them to have a little bit more patience with the inconveniences that come with living in a world with disabled people, whether it’s waiting for them to cross the parking lot safely in their chair, their determination to do their own shopping or any other interaction that may impact the abled’s daily life. I also hope, at the end of a Katie Mettner novel, that they have fallen so in love with the characters that they no longer see the disability. I write for the moment when the reader feels that character’s heart quiet their fears, so they can take a chance on the love that was waiting for them all along.

My Writing Mascot (aka Some of My Favorite Items in My Office)

Jolene’s adorable flying pig, Brooklyn

When I was a kid, this incredible concrete gargoyle called to me from across the jumbled shelves of an emporium-type gift shop. Amidst the rows of trinket boxes and shiny ornaments sat this dear-but-intimidating little pig with wings. To me, he was a symbol of making the impossible, possible. “This will happen when pigs fly.” “That will happen when pigs fly”. Well, guess what, world? Pigs are flying and everything is possible! My parents bought him for me, and what I love about him (so many things!) but especially that he doesn’t look like one of those whimsical flying pigs, awkwardly struggling to stay airborne with flimsy wings. He looks built to fly. It’s as though for him, flying is not only possible, but inevitable. Easy, fun, and perfectly part of who he is. Brooklyn (the flying pig) has watched over my world for a long time. He’s heavy, solid, determined. He flies in the face of ‘no’ without anger or fear, and every time I do something impossible he just looks on, knowingly. (This is the kind of total warm and purposeful confidence that I want everyone to feel when they read my work!)

Guest Post #2

Write Your Book in 30 Days (aka How to Hold Yourself Accountable)

I get asked all the time for advice or support to write books, so often that I’m piloting an online course “How to Write Your Book in 30 Days” :) I want to support as many people as I can to find their voice, and get their book finished in 30 days. This is for people who know they have a book inside them, but keep starting and stopping, people who have ideas, but keep losing momentum. They lose focus, self-sabotage, and forget why they started – but they keep coming back to the dream. Writing a book is such a huge achievement, and it’s on almost everyone’s bucket-list, but it is also an epic undertaking – even when you’re experienced! I love the idea of making it super-doable, supporting people to get access to the content that’s in their heart and into the flow that will actually see their book finished. I love using the process for my own books, and I want to hone it so it works for more people! I would love your readers to get on board for the next pilot round – you can sign up to learn more here https://www.totalblueprint.com/product/write-your-book-in-30-days

Don’t feel as though there is one perfect book inside you – there are hundreds, and the best thing you can do is start!

Rescued
by Miriam Newman

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Non-Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

What do you do when you are alone in the world? If you're a nice middle-aged lady with a social conscience, you go to your local shelter and adopt a rescue dog. Of course, sometimes it isn't only the dog who needs to be rescued. That's when life might send you a Dancer-Dog.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
“We’re home,” I said in that tone you use when you give a dog the good news, and her soft ears pricked.  She sat up, looking eagerly out the window.  She hadn’t come to any palace, just a hundred-year-old Victorian cottage swamped with evergreens, bamboo and a lot of weeds I never found time to whack.  But it boasted a fascinating yard I had already decided to have fenced in despite the cost.  Sam and I walked the perimeter of the proposed yard so the dog could pee copiously once more, and then my friend had to take her leave of us.  She had been walking Dancer and the dog seemed a trifle confused when I took the leash, as though she had considered Sam her new owner, but when I led her into a warm place that smelled like food, she went right in.
Kitty, accustomed to dogs, actually deigned to thump down from the rocking chair to greet us.  The next thing I knew, I was flattened against the solid oak door as a rampaging whirlwind ripped out of my unprepared grasp.  The cat had MOVED--God save the mark!—and Dancer responded instantly.  Poor Kitty, who hadn’t run that fast since her youth, whipped up the slippery wooden steps.  She was able to make good her getaway because Dancer had never before encountered steps.  The dog thrashed at the bottom, lunging in impotent fury, unable to deduce how to get upstairs.
“No!” I admonished when I could catch my breath.  “Bad dog!  No chase!”
She looked at me as if I was crazy.
“Oh, come on,” I said, relenting.  “Let’s eat.”
“I was just about to,” her expression said.  “Where did that cat go, anyway?”
Kitty had gone to the attic.  She stayed there for a long time and she must have had telepathy with Smudgie, the barn cat, because I didn’t see old Smudge for days.
Her food disappeared and so did she.
There followed a delightful afternoon and evening of snoozing on the couch with the dog tucked in the same position she had assumed with Sam, in this case flat on top of me with her nose between my neck and shoulder.  As long as her eyes were hidden, that tuck seemed to say, she couldn’t spot anyone coming to take her away from heaven.  A wave of protective warmth suffused my heart.  This dog must have been through hell.  Who knew what awful things had happened to her?  Well, her troubles were over.  I would see to that.
GUEST POST:
Describe Your Book Cover and How It Came About:
I think my book cover gives an unexpected insight into the writing of this book, because:  It’s Not a Romance!
Now if you know anything at all about my work and have picked yourself up off the floor, read on.  As a romance author, I am truly not a one-trick pony.  I have written early Medieval Romance…fantasy romance…science fiction romance…historical fantasy romance…and even a Bardic romance.  I have written poetry—lots of poetry.  The one thing I had never written was non-fiction.
While flirting with every form of romance, even going so far as to write one book in a pub in Ireland, I really thought THAT WAS IT.  Returning home, I continued my absolute infatuation with the subject, but then an odd thing happened.  Well, maybe not so odd—not at the outset, anyway.  I got a dog.
Dancer turned out not to be any dog.  That dog was need in a brindle coat.  She was an emotional vampire.  I was as hooked on that little pit bull mix as I had ever been on one of my imaginary heroes and she was real.  Oh, she was happy enough to lie at my feet while I banged out an epic.  In fact, she was thrilled, because it took a long time and I didn’t move.  From her standpoint, it was the best thing I ever did.
But every dog has to go out…sometime…and out I went, and then the fun began.  There were adventures with a whirlwind runaway dog, a fox-chasing dog, a horse-challenging dog, a dog that caused my neighbors to say I was crazy.  Because only a crazy person would have put up with her.  She ate my house.  She ate her crate.  I expected to see the red-striped legs and black shoes from The Wizard of Oz sticking out from under the foundation at any time, and the body underneath would have been mine.
I survived, barely.  And for nine insane but glorious years, that dog was my writing companion, and then she was gone but never forgotten.  I had to write her story…just literally had to…and I had to rescue dogs.  Rescue them I did, dog after dog, and finally the one I adopted was my second Dancer Dog.  Tia was so much like Dancer that it was uncanny, she even looked like her, and when my photos of Dancer proved too old and grainy to grace the cover of the book I wrote for her, Tia was my model.
That is why there is a brindle pit bull on the cover of my book Rescued, which is not about romance.  It is about love.  I hope you will enjoy it.
Fantasy poetry driven by myths and legends has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I was published in poetry before catching the romance writing bug. I bring that background to my writing along with a lifelong addiction to horses, an 18 year career in various areas of psychiatric social services and many trips to Ireland, where I nurture my muse. My published works range from contemporary fantasy romance to fantasy historical, futuristic, science fiction and historical romance. EXCERPT TWO:
Life had dealt Cassie a few hard blows. She was still reeling from the last one. Her crooked manager had absconded with most of her hard earned money, leaving her with a big tax bill. The coveted golden knight otherwise called an Oscar award lay forgotten at the back of her sock drawer. When she won the award at 21, it had been her crowning glory. At 36, it looked like it was going to be her swan song. Cassie wasn’t sure if she cared much either way.
She stepped out of the pool and settled into her favorite cabana, letting the sun dry her. Her phone chirped and her face lit up as her best bud’s face flashed on the screen.
“It’s about time,” she said with a pout, activating the video feature on the phone.
A buff, bare-chested man blew a kiss at her and laughed. It was hard to tell he was ten years younger.
“Don’t sulk, Cassie. It will give you wrinkles.”
Cassie straightened her mouth immediately and smiled. “So when are you getting here, Bobby? I have great plans for us.”
