GENRE: New Adult Contemporary Romance

BLURB:

Olivia Meadows is excited to finish her senior year of college as a volleyball national champion beside her teammates and best friends. A complication arrives in the form of John Hunter, that guy, her brother’s best friend whom she has had a secret crush on since she was eleven years old. Effortlessly charming and handsome, with a body honed by years of playing football, John initiates his charm offensive and Olivia finds herself unable to resist him.

John Hunter is pumped to finish his senior year of college as a football national champion beside his teammate and best friend. The only thing missing is that girl, Olivia Meadows, his best friend’s little sister. He needed to sow some wild oats before settling down with Olivia but now he is ready for something serious with the girl he has always admired.

Be careful what you wish for. John and Olivia find themselves dealing with adult consequences very quickly and wondering if their young love can endure the pressures of adulthood. Will they find deeper love or implode from the pressures of their own making?

EXCERPT TWO:

It feels like a secret magical place. No one else is around and I can’t even hear the usual sounds of campus from here. I jump in, “Can I go first?”

I’m really proud of what I’ve written and knowing how great Olivia is with words, I don’t want to follow her. “Of course,” she answers. I face her, take out my folded paper, and grab one of her hands. I take a moment to look at her. No rush. Everything else has been so fast that I’ve barely gotten to take it in. This, I want to remember and feel.

She squeezes my hand which reassures me that I’m not alone here. We are in this together. I take a deep breath and begin. “Olivia Meadows, I didn’t know it at the time but I’ve loved you since I was sixteen years old. You generously helped me with an English paper about The Age of Innocence and that was it for me.”

She jumps in, “I remember that.” I smile back.

“My turn here,” I remind her with a grin. She holds up her hands in surrender. We hold one hand again and I return to my paper, “As I was saying…what that study session did was create a need in me that could only be filled by you. I saw the book’s world through your eyes and realized that I had been missing so much. It also showed me that, through your eyes, everything is brighter, deeper, and more. I was a little too wild then to want to slow down but I’m not now.”

GUEST POST:

Six Photos of the Real Life Places Included in That Guy and That Girl

Hey there! I’m Natalia Albrite, first time romance author of That Guy and That Girl. It’s a new adult sports romance and if you’ve followed any of my previous posts you’ve already heard that the experiences of Olivia Meadows are very closely related to my own experiences. Close your eyes for the next paragraph if you’re already aware of this but pop back in for the paragraph after.

Like Olivia, I am biracial and struggled to make decisions about my future when I was a senior in college. Our obstacles were quite different but the inner struggles were very similar. Also, That Guy and That Girl is my gift to my twenty-two year old self whom I believe would have really loved bingeing this book all those years ago—waaayyy back in the 90s.

I want to share some behind the scenes stuff that I hope intrigues you and makes you want to check it out. I also hope by including some fun visuals, you’ll be that much more drawn in.

1.)  I protected the names of the innocent but I wasn’t too cryptic. In the book, Olivia and John’s university was called Texas University but I really based it on the home of the Longhorns—the one and only University of Texas at Austin, my own alma mater. Hook ‘em!

2.)  Olivia and her close friends, Tish and Laney, shared a great love for ice cream and they bonded repeatedly over consuming it. Amelia’s Ice Cream in the book is based on Amy’s Ice Creams, a locally famous spot. It definitely fits the whole “Keep Austin weird” vibe. My kids and I love a great Amy’s treat.

3.)  John and Marcus eat Philly cheesesteaks from their favorite joint, Philly Tex. This was based on the real-life Texadelphia from which I consumed more cheesesteaks than could ever be healthy. Back in the 90s, it was a much smaller spot but it has been franchised so you might have one in your hometown by now.

4.)  In the opening scenes of the book, Olivia and John lived in the dorm, Kippington. In real life, I was a resident advisor for three years at the all-girls dorm called Kinsolving. It was the perfect college job!

5.)  Until making this list, I’d forgotten that I didn’t ever change the name of Mount Bonnell! Oops, but I think I can get away with it. It’s a beautiful spot, I remember my first visit and it was very similar to what Olivia describes as her first feelings about it. It’s so magical and beautiful!

6.)  UT is a school that highly values its football legacy! I have to admit that I still get a thrill when I go to games and a shout-out to my uncle Rob who passes along his season tickets when he can’t make a game. Our football stadium holds over 100,000 fans and it gets exciting! Hook ‘em!

I hope you find all of this behind-the-scenes stuff intriguing and consider giving That Guy and That Girl a read. And, if you ever visit Austin, Texas, you’ve got some great, classic sites to check out!

Thanks for having me! I’ve had a blast sharing my memories and pictures of some of my favorite spots!
