Corey
swore off love when his wife Annie died from breast cancer. Caitlyn is too
young, too citified, and vibrates with a passion and energy that will upend the
safe, comfortable rhythm of his life. Corey has to choose between playing it
safe and taking a risk on love. Caitlyn needs to find the patience to let Corey
lead. If not, the Maple Sugar Ball might end in a sticky mess, instead of a
slow dance with the man who has captured her heart.
Will their fire burn hot enough to erase doubts and past hurts?

EXCERPT TWO:
Caitlin
took a fortifying sip of her coffee and welcomed the kick of the whisky. She
had no interest in him. Her brain was in charge, and it knew what was good for
her; she would go husband-hunting among the business men of San Diego. One of
them must have a great body too. The devil on her shoulder snickered. You keep
telling yourself that. Her ovaries agreed with the devil. Her angel, a by-the-book
accountant and her internal guardian of rational thought, told them to keep
quiet.
The
older guy nodded at Annette. “Be there in a minute,” he mouthed.
Mr.
Built looked over his shoulder, his eyes narrowed, and the intensity of his
stare set sparks zinging in all of Caitlin’s unmentionable places. One corner
of his mouth tilted up, and his eyes crinkled as if he knew exactly what he was
doing to her. Rational thought sputtered to a halt and died.
“Who’s
that?” Nope, her brain was not in charge, and her mouth clearly had a will and
desires of its own.
“The
guy behind the bar? Stan, the owner.”
Lynn
chuckled. “Not him, Annette. The sparks are flying between your Cat and our
Corey.”
“Really?”
Annette’s eyes widened in enquiry.
Caitlin
groaned. “No matchmaking. He’s just, you know…” She waved a hand in his
direction and risked another look. One hundred
percent man with a great ass. Her mouth watered. “Built.”

In Praise of Heroes
My
first hero was my Dad. I remember him holding my hand and walking into the sea
with me when I was really small to help me “jump” the swells. I called them
waves, a gross exaggeration in hindsight, but going to the beach and risking
shore dumpers was really exciting for a small girl.
My
next hero was Zorro. I can’t remember what the movie was called, but I retain a
distinct image of a witty, dark-haired, sword-wielding, swashbuckling hero in a
red waistcoat and black hat fighting for justice on a rooftop in the tradition
of Robin Hood. I was smitten.
Clearly
I have a type: strong, protective, compassionate, intelligent, fun, fair, and a
good listener. It helps if they have washboard abs, a full head of hair and
their own teeth, but the lack of these attributes is easier to fix, or ignore,
than an absence of humor or disregard for fair play. My challenge as a
contemporary romance writer is how to translate these dashing qualities to the
page in an era in which running around waving a sword is more likely to get you
arrested than admired. Happily, sometimes the hero finds me, like Zorro, or
Corey Duncan in Lion Dancing for Love,
and they understand the rules of engagement for their day. Appropriate without
being patronising, or worse, pedantic.
I
have a really soft spot for Corey. He walked out of the town of Willow Springs,
Vermont, and onto my page with a big heart and a lot to give, deserving of love
but stubbornly believing his day was done. He had loved and lost when his wife
Annie died too young from breast cancer. Putting one foot in front of the other
and living out his days in the house they shared was the best he expected from
life... Nobody ever said heroes were perfect. Have you noticed their tendency
to be both stubborn and stoic? Corey certainly is. Lucky for him, he has loyal
friends and a heroine in Caitlin who knows she should probably walk away and
let him wallow but just can’t bring herself to do it. Thank God for chemistry!
Once
Corey finally get his head in the present and realises Caitlin is more than
just a passing attraction, he goes all out to woo her, even donning his dancing
shoes. His sense of fun never went away; it was just lying dormant waiting to
spark. He also listens, to both words and the silences inbetween them. When
Caitlin says she’d like to do the “walk of shame” as early as possible to avoid
the crowds, not only does he insist on reframing it, but he also walks it with
her.
I’m
adding (just enough) discipline and commitment to my list of heroic qualities.
In that regard, I’m happy to report that while Corey was putting one foot in
front of the other and enduring sleepless nights, he spent a lot of time
working out, so he still has the washboard abs of his youth for Caitlin to
admire, along with a full head of hair. 😉 I
hope you fall in love with him as much as Caitlin and I did.

grew up in South Africa, and went to university in America. She now lives in
