K Street Killing
by Colleen J. Shogan

GENRE: Mystery

BLURB:

At a fancy Washington political fundraiser for Congresswoman Maeve Dixon, Kit and her best pal Meg do their best to woo wealthy lobbyists for campaign donations. When a powerful K Street tycoon mysteriously tumbles off the rooftop, Kit must spring into action to discover who killed the notorious Van Parker before Dixon's candidacy sputters.

EXCERPT ONE:

Inside the elevator, I checked the time. It was eight o’clock. Final votes were starting. I doubted Maeve needed any help, but I flipped my phone off silent mode, so I could hear it ping in case she texted me.

I could either walk two blocks to Union Station or catch an Uber home. My mind shuffled through the cost benefit analysis. I’d shelled out more cash this summer for late night rides home than I cared to remember. On the other hand, the subway was slow and unpredictable. Years of mismanagement, safety violations, and inadequate funding had made the Metro the bane of every Washingtonian’s existence. Remembering that Doug wanted to talk to me about something, I opened the Uber app. My ride was scheduled to arrive in three minutes at the corner of First and Louisiana.

I caught up with today’s news as I waited. Finally, a Camry arrived with the license plate matching my driver’s car. He slowed as I waved him down. As I opened the rear passenger door, I heard spine-tingling screams behind me. My hand froze on the door handle. Without thinking, I spun around. Two older women were standing at the entrance of a narrow passageway that separated Charlie Palmer’s from the building directly behind it. I didn’t have to move to figure out the source of their bloodcurdling cries. Near the far end of the alley, a body was sprawled on the pavement.

REVIEW:

I love a good mystery book and this one totally takes the cake!

This book delves into the elite D.C. powerhouse world where Kit is working as chief of staff for Congresswoman Maeve Dixon’s reelection.  At the team’s last fundraising engagement in D.C. before they head off to North Carolina, their night becomes anything but ordinary.  While Kit and BFF Meg continue to work the crowd, a powerful K Street Tycoon tumbles off the rooftop.  While most people seem to chalk it up toward suicide, Kit and Detective Maggie Glass lean toward foul play.  While Kit begins her investigation it’s clear that someone doesn’t want her looking into this mysterious death.  With threats and someone clearly after her, Kit knows she is on the right trail.  Between having to interview and investigate some uncomfortable suspects, including Kit’s BFF’s new BF, dealing with threatening messages being left for her, and adjusting to married life, Kit is more determined than ever to solve Van Parker’s murder and get back to spending time her new hubby.

This is the second book I’ve read in this book series.  I previously read, reviewed, and blogged about Colleen’s third book in this series, “Calamity at the Continental Club,” last year.  See links below.

I really liked the main characters!  And I was so excited to see Kit and Doug finally married!  They are so cute together!  It was great to see their relationship grow and see them take the next step together.  You get so invested in characters sometimes – especially in a book series, so it’s great to see them happy and still together!  Also, the supporting characters were well-developed and amply played off the main cast.

This book has an excellent storyline that flows, terrific writing style with detailed scenes, fantastic characters, is fast paced, and keeps you completely entertained through the last page.

This book has exceptional mystery crime solving structure with enough clues and excitement to keep you guessing, but still practical and realistic in police procedures.

Again, I loved the D.C. backdrop in this book series that continued into this fourth book as the author shows her D.C. roots by throwing in so many references throughout the book since the book does take place there.  I have been to D.C. a few times and loved it.  So, I really enjoy when I read a book from there that the real D.C. is found in the pages – and it sure was!

I love how this author included historical references in her writings as this gives the book that little extra something!

This book has so much to offer the reader, such as, action, mystery, suspense, excitement, intrigue, adrenaline, drama, love, romance, friendship, and so much more!

There are some very predictable scenes.  However, there are still a few unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!

This is the fourth book in the Washington Whodunit Book Series.  Although, this book is part of a book series, it can absolutely be read on its own as a standalone.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in a fun, exciting, intriguing, mystery book.
