GENRE: Dark Fantasy

BLURB:

On a summer night in a sunbaked desert city, the wandering land appears. A fairytale village nestled in dense forest, it is a place of ruined castles, abandoned treasures, and strange creatures living in the shadows. Brought together by this impossible place are five visitors: failed painter Eli; art professor Amal; young lovers Darcy and Wes; and mysterious, haunted Coyote. Together they explore their own secret village, an entire world hidden in plain sight.

But there is darkness beneath the magic, a force pulling the visitors deeper and deeper into the place’s mysteries. As the boundaries between the secret land and the outside world begin to collapse, each of the visitors is confronted with visions of an otherworldly child, a child whose existence holds the key to understanding everything about the place that has drawn them together.

Who is this child? Why did she choose them? And will she ever let them go?

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

Coyote knew right away she was in someone else’s dream. She did that sometimes, stretched out in her sleep and fell through her dreams and straight into someone else’s. It was always easy to tell. Other people didn’t usually dream smells or tastes, and, unlike her, they rarely saw things that came true later. Coyote usually found the dreams of strangers relaxing compared to her own, free as they were from the whispers and signs and codes she so often had to unravel upon waking.

Not this time, though. This time, she slipped into the dream already tasting the copper tang of fear, already prepared to run. She stood along the edge of a rooftop, grey pavement stretching out before her. Some part of her knew she would jump before the dream was over, and that she would wake up just as she hit the ground. It was Written; whether that was by God or evolution or her own misbegotten neurons, she didn’t know.

“Long fall, isn’t it?” someone said.

She turned around. A middle-aged man in an old-fashioned suit stood in the middle of the rooftop, gazing out at the horizon. He held a pipe in one hand. Ribbons of satin smoke hung in the air without dispersing.

“Do you have a message for me?” Coyote asked.

The man turned to her and smiled with smoke-yellow teeth. “Ah, yes, you’re a clever one. The Queen said you’d pick this up quickly.”
