Had
Owen returned my call? Had Abigail found anything? Any word from Bartelle after
Owen ratted me out? My phone claimed it had no voice or text messages.
Sometimes the signal is so weak the phone doesn’t receive messages, so I
brought the remainder of my drink to the deck, where the signal was strongest,
and dialed voicemail. The sun-heated decking was uncomfortable on my bare feet.
I shifted weight from foot to foot to minimize the discomfort and keyed in my
password.

have no messages at this time.
Back
inside, I booted up the computer and checked email. Nothing relevant and no help
for my situation.
I
had a long, positive history with Sheriff Lon Bartelle. Was it strong enough
for him to cut me some slack over my initially lying to him? Surely, the best
way to tell him of my malfeasance was face-to-face. Like a man mounting the scaffold
for his hanging, I forced leaden legs to return me to the deck. My call to
Bartelle brought the information that he was in the office but not available to
come to the phone.
I
put Atty on a lead to do her business and then shut her in the house. “Sorry
girl, I need to leave you home for this one. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
She
trotted to the living room and, without a glance back, crawled onto the couch,
where she didn’t belong. She pawed the throw pillow resting against one arm,
knocking it flat, and stretched out, snuggling into the back of the couch and
resting her head on the flattened pillow. Her eyes met mine and she grinned, as
if to say, “What? I’m just following orders.”

upon a time I had the mistaken idea that everyone should read my books. That’s
foolish, of course. Just as I don’t enjoy horror stories, no matter how well
written, the only people who should read my books are people who like reading
the kind of books I write. So what, you ask, kind of book is Empty Promises?
If
you like page-turners with plots that twist and turn, Empty Promises is your kind of book.
If
you like hot romance on the page – not so much.
If
you like suspense and thriller novels, Empty
Promises will suit your fancy.
If
you prefer cozy mysteries with food and crafts on the side – this is not that.
If
you like complex characters with strengths and weaknesses, Empty Promises has them.
If
you like your heroes to take names and pound the bad guys to dust, this may not
be for you. Seamus prefers to use brain over brawn, although he’ll use force
when he must.
If
you enjoy amateur sleuth stories set in real locations, Seamus turns amateur
sleuth and Empty Promises is set in
the wilds of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
If
dragons or zombies or other magical/mystical creatures are your preference, the
closest this book comes is a granddaughter who likes fairies and stuffed
animals.
If
you want a knee-slapping hoot – I don’t write them.
But
if you enjoy a bit of wry humor, touching scenes with the grandkid and her dog,
Empty Promises has them, too.

We did visit your far-flung empire this winter, spending time in the Falkand Islands and South Georgia Island before reaching Antarctica. As a Shackleton, Antarctica has always held a certain attraction! I'm still trying to find the link to 'Great Uncle Ernie' as I like to call him, who is buried on South Georgia.
