How do you forgive yourself for a behavior you are not proud of? After talking to many people, I was relieved to find out I am not the only one with this dilemma. We all make unintentional mistakes and bad decisions. These decisions hurt others; and, when we realize the pain we caused, we feel rotten. We can apologize, and maybe the person will forgive us. However, many times, trust is also lost.

What do we do with our own sense of guilt and shame?

Shame is what we do to ourselves and blame is what we do to others. When we are in the middle of the shame game, it is hard for us to get ourselves out of the loop. Even when someone lets us off the blame train with full forgiveness, we can keep playing the internal shame game. Why? Because we feel we deserve it. We start mounting a case in our heads about why we are so very bad. The recurring loop we play in our heads says, “You are what you do, what you did was wicked, you must be a horrible person.” Numerous people use this thinking to justify more unhealthy or hurtful actions, which causes people to keep blaming, and the internal shame continues.
