Eighteen year-old Starry is destined to take over her father’s powerful drug syndicate. But when she finds out he has kept her only sister a secret from her, she can’t trust him anymore. Furious, Starry vows to find Emma, even though she knows her defiance could lead to losing the position she’s worked so hard to inherit.

But Emma isn’t quite the sister Starry hoped for. She’s a straight-laced good girl who wants nothing more than to take down the syndicate that destroyed her family. Starry, willing to do anything to secure her place in the syndicate, accepts her father’s ultimatum to kill Emma and everyone helping her. But the more Starry gets to know Emma, and the more secrets she uncovers, the more she questions whether the price of saving the syndicate is too high—even for someone as cold-blooded and vicious as Starry.

HOW TO LOVE A VILLAINOUS MAIN CHARACTER

I have to admit I was a little nervous to write a novel with a main character who is . . . let’s say she’s kind of horrible. She’s so rough around the edges that she wants to be just like her dad—a drug lord who tortures people on a whim. But I couldn’t stop myself from writing this story! I first got the idea when I thought about how fun it would be to show how different two sisters could be. Starry, my main character, was raised by a drug lord and lives in Los Angeles. Emma, her sister who lives clear across the country in Brooklyn, is an innocent girl who feels when she even mutters a swear word. Put them together and you’ve got quite the interesting story!

The problem I had, however, was winning over my readers with a villainous main character who ultimately ends up promising her father that she’ll kill Emma to prove her loyalty to his drug syndicate. And she means it too. How do you make a murderous character even remotely likeable?

Needless to say, I was shocked when I started submitting chapters of my finished novel to my writing group and they raved about Starry. Everyone seemed to love her. I couldn’t figure out why for the longest time, until I finally realized it’s because Starry is not the worst character in the novel. Her father, Glenn Ramsay, is even worse than she is. Because of this, there are a lot of things readers can relate to with Starry. Around every corner, she finds another person who has lied to her and deceived her, including her hot boyfriend she thought she could trust implicitly. I think most people can relate to Starry because of the emotions she deals with. That being said, I hope my story finds many readers who love Starry and can root for her at the end of the book, no matter how they thought it might end!
