GENRE: YA Fantasy

BLURB:

Sent to marry the brutal King Ulric of Arvad, seventeen year-old Princess Yavenna is already trying to plan her escape. Then she discovers powers she never knew she had, as well as the handsome, elusive Mal, who has a secret of his own. But as the wedding day draws closer, Yavenna has a heart-breaking choice - use all her strength to flee the ancient castle, or marry the King and set his thousands of slaves free. And can she ally herself with rebel forces in time to save Mal, or is the magic the King commands too powerful?

EXCERPT TWO:

She gasped, an army, coming to kill Ulric. Then perhaps it wasn’t up to her to kill him so she could free the slaves, perhaps she could escape too. With Mal. Her shoulders dropped and she took a deep breath, lifting a hand to rub her head.

For a few moments neither of them said anything and the castle below them was quiet. She raised her chin and looked at the dark hair curling over his forehead. If they ran away together she could get to know him. She’d like that.

He raised a hand to brush a strand of hair from above her eyes and his finger grazed her cheek. She met his eyes and swallowed. She should go. She wished he could come with her now, but it was too risky.

“We can go and find your army. Tomorrow.” She pressed the dagger hidden in her sleeve and thought of the man who’d tried to grab her. “I can fight a bit and I’m excellent with a bow.”

He smiled slightly and stepped closer to her.

Thrusting her hand down her sleeve she clasped the dagger and pulled it out. “Here, take this. It’s a bit bigger than the last one. It’ll do more damage if you need it.” She offered it to him.

He reached to get it from her and she shivered as the palm of his hand brushed her fingers. But he didn’t take his hand away, instead, he grasped her fingers. “Thank you, Yavenna. Thank you for wanting to help me.”

REVIEW:

Overall, this book was an engaging, entertaining, and intriguing read!

This book transports you into a magical and mysterious world filled with endless possibilities and the unknown.

This book follows Yavenna, a beautiful, young, sweet, innocent, 17-year-old princess who becomes blackmailed into marrying a mean, evil, brutal King.

Yavenna recently learns that she possesses some strong, powerful, magical powers that she had no idea she had.  In addition, Yavenna discovers Mal, a handsome 18-year-old who is also going through some big changes and holds some big secrets of his own.  Yavenna thinks she could use her powers to escape and get away from the King.  However, she realizes that if she stays she could use her powers and her standing with the King to set thousands of slaves free, realign the King’s goals, and do good for the Kingdom.  Yavenna is torn on what to do, but with the wedding date approaching she is running out of time.

The main characters were well developed, likable, and enjoyable – well perhaps not the King lol.

The story was creative and intriguing!  This book kept me engaged and entertained for the most part.

There are a couple of surprises and twists and turns that were enjoyable and kept me wanting more.

The pace of the book was essentially steady, however, there are a few parts that seemed to drag and cause the story to slow down or come to a screeching halt.  This allowed for me to put the book down a couple times while reading it.  However, the overall story was interesting and I was curious to see how it would end and what Yavenna would choose to do.

Even though I didn’t completely love this book, I still enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to other readers!  Although this book is written more for the YA reader; however, this book contains a large amount of violence and killings that are not usually suitable for YA readers.  So I would suggest this book also for even older readers of Fantasy/Magical Realm/Fiction genre fans as I think they would also greatly enjoy this book.

Hi Joseph - hmm, that's a good question. Someone gave me Rogue by Julie Kagawa just recently and I loved it, so I want to read the rest of that series, and also her Iron Fey series looks excellent, so I'm going to get a copy of the Iron King this weekend. I also just read Runes by Ednah Walters and really enjoyed that so I'm going to get the next one in that series. Finally, I'm looking forward to reading the rest of Alison Croggan's series that starts with The Bone Queen as that was definitely the best book I've read for ages. Good luck with the giveway! And good luck to everyone else - thanks for all the comments :) :)
