GENRE: Historical Cozy Mystery

BLURB:

Kapellmeister Joseph Haydn would like nothing better than to show his principal violinist, Bartó Daboczi, the door. But with the Empress Maria Theresa’s visit scheduled in three weeks, Haydn can ill-afford to lose his surly virtuoso.

But when Bartó disappears—along with all the music composed for the imperial visit—the Kapellmeister is forced to don the role of Kapell-detective, or risk losing his job.

Before long Haydn's search uncovers pieces of a disturbing puzzle. Bartó, it appears, is more than just a petty thief—and more dangerous. And what seemed like a minor musical mishap could modulate into a major political catastrophe unless Haydn can find his missing virtuoso.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

Greta, a palace maid who enjoys a good gossip, tells Rosalie that Barto has threatened to leave.

A Bit of Gossip

“I was not listening in at the door,” plump Greta said as she brushed past Rosalie. “I was emptying the vases in the hallway outside the Music Room.” She pointed a pudgy hand in the direction of the Estates Director’s office. “He was up there, too, you know. What business did he have there, I should like to know!”

Rosalie followed the maid into the kitchen. “But what did you hear Greta?”

Greta turned toward Rosalie, a broad smile on her face. “You will never guess?” She caught sight of the letter on the kitchen table, and smirked. “Let us just say Herr Haydn might soon be in need of the services of a violinist such as your brother.”

Rosalie’s hand flew to her mouth. “It is Master Bartó, is it not? What has he done now?”

Greta sat down, brushing a fine strand of golden hair from her pale face. “He has threatened to leave! But not before Herr Haydn gave him his marching orders.” She leaned over. “I can tell you I will be glad to see the last of that awful man.”

Rosalie sank down into the chair next to Greta. It hardly seemed possible. Could Master Bartó have grown so audacious? What could have caused it? His strange visitor? The lure of a better offer, perhaps?

AUTHOR BIO:

A former journalist, Nupur Tustin relies upon a Ph.D. in Communication and an M.A. in English to orchestrate fictional mayhem.  The Haydn mysteries are a result of her life-long passion for classical music and its history. Childhood piano lessons and a 1903 Weber Upright share equal blame for her original compositions, available on ntustin.musicaneo.com.

Her writing includes work for Reuters and CNBC, short stories and freelance articles, and research published in peer-reviewed academic journals. She lives in Southern California with her husband, three rambunctious children, and a pit bull.
