That’s right folks, gather ‘round and I’ll make you wonder
why you haven’t already read the book of the season, The Devil’s Flood!
Yes, The Devil’s Flood, ladies and gentlemen, lads and
lasses.
It has mystery and history and things that are historious and
things that are mysterious.
What, kid? There ain’t no such word as historious? Well
there ought to be.
This wondrous book - is wondrous OK kid? This wondrous book
has got it all, folks. We got treasure. We got mummies and murder and mud.
Lakes that shrink and a house that plumb disappeared.
Yes, my friends. A whole entire house …
gone.
Was it aliens?
Bad witches or some other magical Whosie Whatsits?
Maybe it just slipped into some alternative universe!
My friends, you’ll just have to read it to find out!
And it ain’t all mysteries of histories. No siree! There’s
plenty goin’ on in the current century. You bet there is.
Videos on cell phones. Crutches that you don’t tuck under
your pits. Strained relationships. Secret wild parties with a booze that has a
dangerous kick.
Is it spiked with some new drug?
You’ll have to read The Devil’s Flood to find out, folks,
when forensic science proves what it is.
And that still ain’t all, not by a long shot, folks!
We got hidden tunnels.
We got storms and rain and rivers risin’.
We got record books and diaries. Toys and money. And windows
that look like mirrors.
And an explosion!
Yep, kid, an explosion. That should make you happy. You
young’uns always like it when things blow up.
Now gentlemen and ladies, gals and guys, we got all of this
in a book that ain’t even an adventure book. No siree! ‘Tain’t even on of them
thriller books.
It’s one of them cozy mystery books!

EXCERPT ONE:
No one ever found out what happened
to Melvin Sutton. Like the house that had been provided to the Sutton family by
the man he sharecropped for, Melvin had disappeared. What remained wasa legend
and a lake bearing his name … and a very angry young descendent.
“What was that?”
The cry brought me out of my reverie
to see Ronnie McLaren leap to her feet.
A second later we all felt a tremor.
Jumping up, we all clumped together
as if that would help against … whatever was happening.
“Look!” Nancy pointed toward the
shoreline a few yards away from the pavilion. She then started clicking away at
it with her Canon. The water’s edge twitched.
I’d never seen water twitch like
that. It did it again …
… And then it started to slide away
from the shore. With an explosive roar and a huge plume of spray, the water
ripped through the levee a hundred or more yards due south of where we stood.
Within moments the water’s edge was
ten feet lower and twenty feet further away.

AUTHOR BIO:
Slightly
quirky, always creative, Pearl R. Meaker has been an artist, singer and
craftsperson her whole life. Although she's always had stories in her head,
they didn't come out to play with others until the advent of home computers
with their ease of making corrections and moving bits around.
After several
years of writing fanfiction in the world of Tolkien's Middle-Earth, she took a
couple of writing courses and dove into writing original works of fiction, and
The Emory Crawford Mysteries were born.
When not
playing with story ideas you can find Pearl playing with yarn either knitting
or crocheting, doing other arts and crafts, bird watching and photographing
nature, playing bluegrass fiddle (her husband plays banjo) or relaxing with her
hubby on the sofa watching mystery shows on Netflix.
Oh - and
reading all sorts of books, but especially cozy and other types of mysteries!
The books
in The Emory Crawford Mysteries Series are reminiscent of Agatha Christie's
Miss Marple mysteries, which is why Pearl has chosen to characterize her
stories as "murder genteel."

ReplyDeleteI usually hesitate to answer this sort of question in case any of my author friends come to visit the blog and I didn't name them. But I'll preface it with - I have more favorite authors than I can remember and these will just be a few who come to mind.
Then there's the problem of my not being an analytical reader. I often have a lot of trouble pinpointing what I like about someone's work. I read to enjoy the story they are telling. If they tell their story well - pull me into the story so that I feel like I'm there instead of in my chaise - and if the characters appeal to me, I like that author's works.
So here's a few authors that come to mind.
Agatha Christie, Isaac Asimov (older works), J.R.R.Tolkien, Molly MacRae, J.R.Ripley, Sue Ann Jaffarian (Granny Apples & Odelia Grey), Lynn Cahoon, Simon Brett (Mrs. Pargeter books), Yuan Jur (fantasy/paranormal/time travel), Kelley Armstrong.
And there are many, many others. :-)
