EXCERPT TWO:
Two hours
later, Maëlle couldn’t believe she was still sitting in the hospital parking
lot in a dark section hidden away with Quinn.
“Quinn, I
don’t understand all of this secrecy.”
“I have
to take precautions; it could be that we were followed.”
“Are you
serious? Or just crazy?”
Quinn
glanced in the rear view mirror. “I’m not crazy. Are you…Crazy?”
Maëlle
rubbed her brow. “You should know. If crazy exists, you’d the King. What the
devil is really going on? Are you telling me the truth about Lucy and the
baby?”
He waited
for a moment and checked the mirrors again on the car. “Okay, here’s the only
other information I know about Lucy. She used to come down and see me every so
often. She was messing around with some guy she met while she was staying in
Paris.”
“Lucy lived
in Paris?”
“Paris,
Illinois. She said she thought the guy said that he was from Chicago but he
grew up in some small town outside of New Orleans. Anyway the guy was worse than I’d ever been
to her.”
“Hmm,
worse than you Quinn. The guy must have been a real shit.”
“Yeah, he
was domineering, controlling and abusive.
He exerted a lot of control over Lucy. That’s why every so often she
would run down to Mexico and hide out with me for a few weeks.
He
laughed out a bitter laugh. “Can you believe it? I’m the one who told Lucy this
guy was a user stringing her along. He wouldn’t marry her. She wouldn’t listen
to me. She said he’d promised to marry her. Something I’d never do. She was a girl after all. A girl who wanted
the ring and that marriage stuff like the fairy tale.”
A charged
silence fell over them.
