EXCERPT THREE:
“Boyz3000
will be where?”
“AT THE
HOTEL IN THE BAHAMAS WHERE I AM GOING!!!!” she screamed into my ear. “THEY’RE
DOING A CONCERT!!”
“OH MY
GOD!!!” I screamed back. I nearly fell off my chair. “That is so awesome!”
“I know,
but wait! My parents said I could take a friend, and I want to take you!”
“Me?” I
gasped. “You want to take me? To see Boyz3000 in their concert?”
“Yes,
because we both love them and you’re my best friend and…”
Jenny
kept talking, but I was so excited I didn’t hear anything else until she said,
“We are leaving next Saturday for the weekend.”
“THIS
SATURDAY???”
“No! Next
Saturday! The one after this weekend! My parents will pay for the hotel and
all. You’ll share my room. You just need to pay for your plane ticket.”
“Uh-oh,”
I said. “How much does that cost?”
“It’s on
a special deal; it’s a hundred and fifty dollars.”
“Oh.
That’s a lot of money. I don’t know if they’ll pay that.”
“I know
it’s a lot, but they have to.”
“But what
if they don’t?”
Jenny
thought for a minute. “Tell them you’ll die if you don’t go.”
“That
kind of thing doesn’t work with my parents.”
“Well,
think of something! ANYTHING!!!” she shrieked. “My dad is trying to get us
backstage passes for the Meet and Greet!!!”
“WHAT?” I
gasped. “THE MEET AND GREET???”
“Yes!!!”
Jenny squealed. “We’ll be able to meet them IN PERSON, and probably talk to
them too because my dad works in TV and…”
She was
still talking but I didn’t hear anything else. Oh my God!!! Oh my God!!! My
heart totally stopped beating at that very moment…

Social
Media's Influence on Teens: Positive vs. Negative Effects
Social media is a tool that gives us the ability to communicate and
connect with one another on a level that was considered sci-fi fantasy not so
many years ago. Our ideas can be instantly shared with people across the globe.
Teens can join organizations geared to their interests and groups that work for
social justice even if far from the center of that activity. They can be
creative in ways that had previously been reserved for professionals, and
social media allows that creativity – their videos, music, writing, etc. – to be broadcast and shared globally. It has
also allowed them to forge friendships with people in places far beyond their
schools or neighborhoods. In its power to create relationships across nations,
it can become a tool of greater global cooperation as teens enter their adult
worlds.
But that same positive outreach can also amplify the “noise” of social
media: the bullying, the shaming, and the ability to attack anonymously. These
technological assaults can remain in the electronic universe for years. They
are harmful mostly for the victim, but are also damaging to the perpetrators,
who are learning to value victimization over empathy.
And the increasing dependence on a device for forming “relationships”
can be destructive, denying teens the kind of real face to face contact that is
the basis of human growth.
Every generation faces situations and/or new technologies that provide
exciting growth potential and serious challenges. I have great faith that the
people brought up in the world of social media will lean toward the positive
and succeed, as did the generations before them who were told that their love
of radio, or rock and roll, or MTV would damage their futures. Change is always
with us. And it’s not only up to teens to adjust; it’s up to parents, teachers,
and the broader culture to support a value system that emphasizes the positive
and decreases the appeal of the negative: fewer reality shows that promote
aggression, shaming, and bullying; a political focus on policy not personality,
and a greater spotlight on teens using social media to improve their lives and
the lives of others. Many are out there doing it and in their hands, social
media is a positive tool.

AUTHOR BIO:
Taro Meyer is a Grammy, Parents’ Choice, and Audie Award winning
Audio Producer who has been producing and directing YA audiobooks for over 20
years, including The Princess Diaries Series starring Anne
Hathaway, the All American Girl Series starring Ari Meyers, The
Inheritance Cycle (Eragon, Eldest, Brisngr) and Judy Blume’s The
Pain and the Great One, Here’s to You Rachel Robinson and Tiger
Eyes among others.
She co-produced two touring companies of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's
smash rock show Christmas Eve and Other Stories and their
TV special The Ghosts of Christmas Eve, receiving Gold and Platinum
Albums for her work with the team. She was associate producer of the
award winning anti-bullying movie, “The Contest,” and co-produced
the premier showcase of off-Broadway’s Little Willie.
As an actress and singer, she starred on Broadway in the musical Zorba, in
numerous regional and off-Broadway shows, and on TV’s All My Children,
Another World (for which she also composed music) and the
mini-series Memories of Midnight, amongst others.
Meyer wrote and produced the upcoming children’s album: Mighty
Musical Fairy Tales, starring international artist Patti Austin; an
updated, joyous musical version of Classic Fairy tales, accompanied by an
illustrated book, The Ugly Duckling.

DeleteFantastic guest post! I was having this conversation with my mom the other day about how hard it is to be a teen nowadays. Although the internet has brought so much positivity in our lives, there's so much negative. There's so much bullying/humiliating using social media. I know I wouldn't be able to handle it. What some kids are beginning to find out is these posts and tweets have the ability to negatively affect your future. So it's imperative that we all are careful about what we say online. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with all of us! :)

ReplyDeleteInteresting question. I once found an old book, "Theoretical Anthropology" that fascinated me and lead to my becoming an anthropology major in college. I loved "When God Was a Woman," by Merlin Stone, and Pablo Neruda's poetry. And there's no doubt that Dr. Seuss's "Horton Hatches the Egg," which I read over and over as a child had great impact on me. That book has everything: drama, commitment, betrayal and unconditional love. And it all rhymes!
