The Dragon's Staircase
by McKenna Grey & Everly Archard

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Romantic Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

FBI Agent Alexa Kyndall devoted eight years of her life to the search for justice, showing no mercy to the guilty and depraved. When she joins a special task force to bring down a serial killer, Alexa encounters the most unexpected criminal of her career.

When a child witnesses a brutal slaying, Alexa’s life becomes intertwined with Craig Pierson’s, a man with his own haunting past. They join forces, only to discover they must put everything on the line in a pulse-pounding struggle to protect and survive.

Nestled in a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, The Dragon’s Staircase is an intriguing, nonstop adventure that will keep readers enthralled from start to finish.

EXCERPT TWO:

For ten long seconds, Alexa didn’t move. Her body rooted at the foot of the bed, as the breath in her throat stilled and her knees faltered. The innocuous object rested only a few feet in front of her. A manila envelope that on any other day, in any other circumstance, would’ve been overlooked. In spite of the scattered darkness, she recognized the handwriting. Her pulse raced as a single face flashed to the forefront of her mind. A face she could never forget.

Julian Frederick.

If she were anyone else, the need to hyperventilate would have been dire, but her FBI training still reigned strong inside of her. It forced out an automatic command to slow her heartbeat and steady her breath. Panic was a natural reaction to stress. A reaction she’d learned to overcome through practice and experience. Slowly, her body obeyed and her mind cleared from the terror-induced daze. Right now, emotional distance was key. It offered her the detachment she needed to remain sharp.

This wasn’t her bedroom. It was a crime scene. Her crime scene.

INTERVIEW WITH MCKENNA:

What do you think about when you are alone in your car?
I talk so myself. :) Actually, I don’t drive all that much because I work from home. But when I go on a road trip or take a drive to somewhere in nature, often I’ll have soft music playing and will work through whatever story I’m currently writing. I might act out a scene, playing both parts, seeing what works and what doesn’t. Sometimes I’ll be the writer/observer watching my characters act out their scenes. I can really get into it, too. Once I started crying during a particularly emotional scene, but it really helps. But most of the time, I listen to audiobooks.

What type of hero do you like best?
Tall, dark, and handsome always works for me, but that’s just surface stuff. I like a hero who is flawed. He’ll be the big, strong, knight-in-shining-armor, but he’ll also have his own weaknesses and vulnerabilities. He has a strong moral compass, but is willing to toss it out the window (not too far) when the choice is between protecting someone he loves and possibly losing that someone.

If you could be any character from literature, who would it be?
Elizabeth Bennett. Goodness, I know I’m not alone here, but come on. She has a quick mind, she’s witty (not silly), and she gets to marry Mr. Darcy. It’s a no-brainer.

What appeals to you most about your chosen genre?
I love great romance and I enjoy suspense-filled adventure. Combining them makes sense, and in the case of romantic suspense (when done right), there’s this nice balance of the two. We get some romance, some tender moments, and then BAM, we don’t know what hit us. I like the ups and downs, the not knowing, and then at the end, the sudden release of calm when you know everything is going to be okay.

What has been your greatest pleasure in writing The Dragon’s Staircase?
Aside from the exciting roller-coaster of romance and suspense of writing the book, I really enjoyed collaborating with my co-author, Everly Archard. When our mutual editor recommended Everly, I had no idea my experimentation into co-writing would be so much fun. I write other books under another pseudonym, so sharing the responsibility of writing this series leaves me time to continue working on my other books. And, did I mention all the fun?

What are you working on right now?
Everly and I are well into the second book in the KYNDALL FAMILY THRILLERS, Shadow of the Forgotten. We’re also working on a joint short story collection for Christmas, and plotting out the other books in this series. We’re keeping busy!
