Diagnosed with epilepsy at 13, Jane's life took a wild turn full of seizures, specialists, and some seriously strange hospital adventures. But instead of letting it break her, she learned to laugh—at the chaos, the cringe, and even the curveballs. Laughing Through the Storm is a hilariously honest memoir about finding resilience, ridiculousness, and unexpected joy in the middle of life's messiest moments.
EXCERPT ONE:
It was a frosty January morning in 1981 when I decided to make my dramatic debut in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. As the latest addition to the family line-up, I was a calm and easy-going baby, quietly lulling everyone into a false sense of security. Classic me— always setting up for a twist.
My dad worked for the Health of Animals, a branch of the Canadian federal government, as a veterinarian in Prince Edward Island. They were responsible for the control, prevention and eradication of certain animal diseases. As the district veterinarian for the entire province, he had responsibilities for the health and well-being of all livestock, from pigs and cows to chickens. His days were a mix of travelling to farms to test animals for serious diseases like tuberculosis and rabies; visiting auction houses to ensure only healthy animals were sold; attending meat-packing plants to collect samples; and making safety diagnoses to ensure that animals entering the food chain were safe for human consumption.
When I was two, my parents decided to move us to Riverview, New Brunswick, a town that became the stage for my happiest childhood memories. We lived on Hamilton Court, a little slice of suburban heaven with one particularly glorious feature: hills. Our backyard sloped gently, but our neighbours’ yards were even steeper, perfect for sledding. Every winter, kids from all over the neighbourhood would arrive armed with sleds, ready to turn those snowy slopes into the ultimate playground. We would shriek with laughter as we careened down the hill and tumbled into a snowbank. Gravity may have been our accomplice in the winter, but in the summer, it was the architect of our joy. My friends and I would roll down those same hills, giggling uncontrollably, dizzy from both the spinning and the laughter.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
There are a few things in life you can be sure of. Death. Taxes. And divas being divas.
“Why?” Melanie sobbed. “Why is this happening to meeeee?”
I jogged to the fallen man and knelt beside him in the courtyard. Pressing a finger to his neck, I tried to find a pulse.
“Another body,” my sister hiccupped. “Why here?”
I sat back on my heel. The dead man faced the pristine marble fountain. And he was definitely dead. Though his skin was still warm, his eyes stared, as blank as the nearby statue of Hermes.
Yanking my phone from the rear pocket of my khakis, I called 9-1-1. The scent of orange blossoms billowed in the warm night air, but now the odor seemed sickening.
My mother appeared at my side. “Oh, my God. That’s—” She gripped my shoulder, her nails digging in. Just as suddenly, she released me and edged the toe of her low camel-colored shoes away from the pooling blood.
“I just f-found him there.” Melanie pointed.
“And it’s a terrible shock,” my mother said in a low voice. “Now, we need to pull ourselves together.” She looped one arm around Melanie’s hourglass waist.
“Nine-one-one, what is your emergency?”
“Murder, I think,” I said. “My sister found a dead man. His head is—” I swallowed and looked away. “There’s a lot of blood. We’re at the Domus Vinea Museum, in the smaller courtyard.”
“Are you in danger?” the operator asked.
“No. There’s a reception going on here. There are lots of people...” I glanced toward the opening to the courtyard. Guests had begun to gather, staring, in its arched entrance.
“Why does this always happen?” Melanie wailed. “First Sicily and now this. Am I cursed?”
“No, no,” my mother murmured, touching the squash blossom necklace beneath the collar of her denim shirt. “It’s just bad luck.”
“Help is on the way,” the dispatcher said. “Is the man you found breathing?”
“No. He’s dead.” I knew dead, and I knew what came after for the people left behind.
GUEST POST:
Five Reasons You Should Read A Deathly Display: The Latest Cozy Mystery in My Paranormal Museum Series
If you're a cozy mystery lover like me, you know that sinking into a book with clever puzzles, charming settings, and just the right touch of intrigue is pure bliss. That's why I'm happy to share my newest release, A Deathly Display—book 11 in the Perfectly Proper Paranormal Museum cozy mystery series. Maddie Kosloski is back, juggling cursed artifacts, small-town secrets, and a murder that's anything but picture-perfect. Here are five reasons this cozy mystery will hook you from page one.
1.) An Art-World Setting That's Pure Cozy Mystery Magic
Cozy mysteries shine when the backdrop feels like a character itself, and A Deathly Display takes that to the next level with a glamorous museum inspired by The Getty in California. Picture elegant travertine halls, sprawling gardens, and panoramic views twisted into a fictional venue where high-society meets homicide. Maddie enrolls in a curation class there, hoping to polish her skills for her quirky San Benedetto Paranormal Museum, but ends up curating clues to a killer instead.
Fun fact: The "haunted" painting in the story's subplot is based on real tales of cursed artworks.
2.) Light Paranormal Twists That Keep the Cozy Mystery Tension Simmering
What sets my series apart in the cozy mystery genre is the subtle paranormal flavor—never over-the-top, always leaving room for doubt. In A Deathly Display, a vintner's painting is possibly haunted, with a figure that seems to shift when no one's looking. Is it a curse, or clever trickery?
Fun behind-the-scenes detail: I researched museum ghost stories for authenticity, like whispers in empty rooms or lights flickering near certain displays. Readers love this in cozy mysteries because it adds a delicious shiver without tipping into horror. No talking animals or spells here—just that "maybe magic" ambiguity that makes every clue pop.
3.) A Relatable Heroine and Character Growth That Hits Home
At the heart of any successful cozy mystery is a protagonist you want to befriend, and Maddie Kosloski is that gal. In her thirties, back in her hometown after a career detour, she's rebuilding her life one exhibit at a time—feeling overshadowed by her super-successful siblings, just like Central California's wine country (inspired by underrated Lodi) gets eclipsed by Napa.
Behind the scenes: Maddie's arc draws from real women I've known—smart, stubborn, and quietly fierce. Cozy mystery fans connect with Maddie's growth because it's authentic—no superheroes, just everyday resilience. This book shows her evolving confidence. Fun fact: Her "curation class" was loosely based on an online museum curation course I took, where I learned how to build suspense through maze-like layouts (dim halls for tension, bright exits for relief).
4.) A Clever, Fair-Play Puzzle That's Cozy Mystery Perfection
Cozy mysteries thrive on brain-teasing whodunits, and A Deathly Display serves up a doozy: a body discovered at a swanky event, with motives tangled in family and professional feuds and hidden provenances. Red herrings abound, but every clue is fair, leading to that satisfying reveal.
5.) Slow-Burn Romance and Community Bonds That Warm Every Cozy Mystery Page
No cozy mystery is complete without heartfelt connections, and A Deathly Display delivers with Maddie's evolving love life and tight-knit circle. She's got options—Mason the charming biker, Detective Slate the steady cop—and now a third contender who might be the charm. They keep it professional and slow, building tension across books without overshadowing the mystery. Plus, her meddlesome mom and her diva sister provide that family warmth cozy mystery readers adore.
Behind the scenes: I love writing these bonds because they're inspired by real-life relationships—loyal, messy, and ultimately uplifting. In this cozy mystery, connections help Maddie untangle the plot, reminding us that solving crimes (and life) is better together. If you're hooked on cozy mysteries with romance that's sweet but not sappy, this book will leave you smiling. Grab it now—your TBR pile (and heart) will thank you!
There you have it—five rock-solid reasons A Deathly Display is your next cozy mystery obsession. With its art-infused intrigue, paranormal whispers, relatable sleuthing, clever plot, and warm bonds, it's everything we love about the genre. Available in ebook and paperback—perfect for curling up with tea (or wine).
What's your top reason for loving a cozy mystery? The setting, the puzzle, or the people? Drop a comment—I read every one and might feature your ideas in future posts.
Happy reading,
Kirsten Weiss
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
No time for second-guessing.
The usually busy street was unaccountably deserted. Where was everybody? I reached a corner and again glanced behind. He wasn’t running, but the distance between us was closing.
How was this happening? To me? As a seasoned traveler and, I believed, savvy woman of the world, I told my readers how to have fun while staying out of trouble. Thousands of them relied on my advice. They emailed and tweeted and messaged to tell me so.
My gaze darted left, right, looking for refuge, a person in a doorway, help of any kind. A side street to the left was jammed with parked cars. No people. On the right, a trattoria a few doors down. Closed. Even the cats slept. Hearing the clomp of boots from behind, I kicked off the annoying sandals and ran.
The sound of the boots grew louder, faster, racing my pounding heart. My mouth filled with the metallic taste of adrenaline. Another few strides and, ahead on the right, was the Anglican All Saints’ Church. I knew that church. I’d been there!
I dashed across the Via di Gesu e Maria—Thank you, Jesus and Mary! Through the church’s main doors and into a hallway alongside the nave.
“Hello?” I panted as I streaked past unattended offices. Silence. Desks abandoned. Phones stilled. Empty on Sunday? Nobody counting the collection, choir practice—nothing?

GUEST POST #1:
Everyone loves a hero! Tell us all about this genuine character and the inspiration behind their development.
Genie Clarke, the protagonist of my new destination thriller, She Knew Too Much, has appeared in a number of my published short stories. Because she’s a travel writer, she pops up in different locales, and because she’s observant and detail-obsessed, she pays attention to what’s going on around her—even when she shouldn’t! In the first chapter of this book, set in Rome, she overhears several gangsters’ conversation and realizes they’re planning a crime, but before she can figure out what the crime is, they notice her. From that moment on, she’s on the run. In some ways Genie is like me (a writer), so I know what that’s like, but I wish in other ways I was more like her. If she thinks she’s right, she doesn’t hang back.

GUEST POST #2:
Bring on the boos! Everyone loves to hate the villain! Tell us all about this truly loathed character and the inspiration behind their development.
Four young mafia gangsters are on Genie’s trail, and they’re all very different. Gianni is preoccupied with his place in the organization and has visions of himself as an important Player, capital “p.” But readers will see he’s full of hot air. Marco, for various reasons, is becoming disillusioned with the criminal life, and not sure of his place in it. He’s in it mainly because of the influence of his cousin. The cousin, Lama, just does whatever he’s told, doesn’t ask questions, and doesn’t think too much about it. The fourth man, though, he’s the dangerous one. Nic likes the violence. How these four young men support, antagonize, and play off each other was fun to write. I hadn’t thought about how different in personality they were before I considered your question. I’m glad you asked!
I hope your readers take the opportunity to read She Knew Too Much. I think they will find it a fast-moving story with touches of romance, humor, and a big dose of humanity. I welcome their responses. Thank you for inviting me to share these few words about the story’s heroes and villains.

Lira was meant to die for the throne.
Cassian Vale was trained to be the blade that ended her.
But the moment he hesitates—one heartbeat, one breath—everything forbidden ignites.
Now the deadliest man in the Syndicate is the only thing standing between Lira and a prophecy that demands her blood. He should fear her. He should kill her. Instead… he can’t stop wanting her.
She’s the girl marked for sacrifice.
He’s the weapon shaped to obey.
Together, they become the spark that threatens to burn Obscura to ashes
As Lira’s power awakens and the throne tightens its grip, their desire becomes its own kind of danger—raw, consuming, and impossible to survive untouched. Enemies hunt them. Shadows follow them. And the kingdom whispers one truth:
If Cassian doesn’t ruin her, she’ll ruin him.
A dark, seductive story of prophecy, power, and a love so intense it could topple a kingdom.
EXCERPT ONE:
The blade was colder than I expected.
Cassian Vale stood close enough that I could feel his breath against my temple, slow and steady—unbothered by the fact that he was about to end my life. His hand didn’t shake. His voice didn’t rise.
“Any last words?” he asked quietly.
I laughed.
It startled him. I felt it in the brief hitch of his breath, the infinitesimal pause before instinct took over again.
“You look disappointed,” I said. “Were you hoping I’d beg?”
His grip tightened at my throat—not enough to hurt, just enough to remind me how easily he could. “I don’t enjoy this,” he said.
“Then why are you here?”
His mouth hovered near my ear. “Because Obscura demands obedience.”
My pulse raced—not with fear, but with something sharper. Dangerous.
“And what do you demand?” I whispered.
The blade lowered.
For the first time in his life, Cassian Vale hesitated.

Bound by destiny, torn by fate—their love stood unbroken, victorious over all.
Kat MacArthur still feels the loss of her brother to another time. Seeking solace, she stumbles upon Ceallach, a Fae warrior, she’s had feelings for ever since she met him. The emotion grows stronger whenever they are together. Yet he warns her to stay away from the upcoming gathering for the Iona Stones. Kat refuses—she needs to be there to help her family and Ceallach.
Ceallach is torn between duty, magic, and the ache for mortal love. His Fae soul is sworn to protect the Iona Stones during the Gathering, but his heart is lost to Kat. With the prophecy looming, he cannot promise her forever—no matter how much he longs to. The maiden of the Iona Stones now faces sacrifice, and he fears if his beloved gets too close, he cannot save her.
When dark forces rise to take the Iona Stones along with their powers, Ceallach is forced into an impossible decision—to defy destiny or surrender to love?
EXCERPT ONE:
Still wearing a grin, he strode forward with confidence, and a sensuality Kat had not forgotten. The man still took her breath away with one look. Ceallach arrived before her, a smile playing on his lips. As his eyes swept across her face, the expression faltered. His brows knitted together in a frown, shadowing the sudden tension in his gaze. Reaching with his finger, he lifted a tear from her cheek, gripped his fist hard, and when opened, a small, clear teardrop-shaped gemstone sat in his palm.
“Dry yer tears, sweet Kat. Yer face is much prettier without them.” He took her hand and, with his other placed the gemstone in her palm. “When ye hold the gem, yer tears will fade, and happy thoughts shall fill yer heart.” When the stone touched her skin, her mind cleared, and a sense of ease washed over her.
Ceallach released her hand and strode past her to the doors.
Kat turned, calling after him. “Wait, why are ye here?”
The attractive Fae stopped and turned. “Dagda sent me. I’ve come to meet with the guardian of the stones. All the stones have returned. The gathering and battle of good vs evil is upon us. The gods have called, and we must answer.”
He opened the heavy oak doors without effort and strode through. The doors weight closed them, leaving Kat in the shadows again. She blinked, almost not believing her eyes and the truth before her. Her secret love had just casually strolled back into her life. Gripping the gem, he’d shaped from her tears, warmth washed over her. Ceallach was here. A smile crossed her face.
Ceallach was here.
GUEST POST:

Some of My Favorite Items in My Office
Before I get into my writing space, I need to give a little backstory on how and why—because it’s deeply personal to me.
When I began writing seriously, as in deciding this would be my full-time focus and not something I simply tinkered with, we were just coming out of the pandemic. The only dedicated office space in our home was—and still is—my husband’s office. My “office” at the time consisted of the main chair in the great room, otherwise known as Grand Central Station for our household. Peace and quiet were not exactly on the menu.
After several failed attempts at sharing an office with my husband, we started looking for another solution. The idea finally clicked after a vacation rental where I spent a lot of time working in a small office nook. Inspired, we decided to convert an ugly 1990s wet bar in the game room into a study and beverage nook—and just like that, my creative space became reality.
The space has its staples. A coffee maker for brewing coffee and Scots tea. A mini fridge stocked with cold water and snacks. A dedicated snack station filled with chips and cookies, because creativity runs on carbs.
Buddy, our dog, keeps me company in the game room, planted in front of the window where he judges everyone who dares walk past the house. Daisy the cat curls up under the other chair. But my all-time favorite companion is my Dammit Doll.
Years ago, I saw Betty White holding one in a social media post. After looking into what they were for, I ordered one myself, pink with white polka dots. If you’re unfamiliar, they’re weighted dolls designed specifically for slamming against a table when frustration strikes. I relied on her heavily when the triplets were in school. When they graduated, I packed her away, convinced her job was done.
During a recent clean-out, I found her again. Now she sits beside me while I write, on hand, doing her part to keep me sane.

A Pride & Prejudice variation with a slightly paranormal, mainly comic twist!
When Elizabeth Bennet visits her newly-married friend, Charlotte Collins, at the Hunsford parsonage, she has no idea that Mr. Darcy (he of the arrogant demeanor and perpetual cause of annoyance!) shall turn up to ruin her blissful, idyllic days.
Only, Mr. Darcy is not himself. And then Elizabeth stumbles straight through him one day... like one would an apparition! Goodness gracious!
“Mr. Darcy, I do not know what you mean, but I would appreciate it if you would desist from haunting me!”
“I apologize, Miss Bennet, for scaring you,” Mr. Darcy said, almost regretfully.
To solve her haunting problem, Elizabeth must team up with Mr. Darcy to find out what happened to him, and along the way discover that maybe he is not all that he seemed at first. And that maybe... she doesn’t hate him after all.
“You wish to write the letter now?” he asked as she moved past him with the candle.
“Well, to be honest,” she glanced at him. “I would prefer to sleep. But since you are here, I do not see why not.”
From the antics of Lady Catherine de Bourgh to the hilarity of Mr. Collins’ advice on staying fit, The Cherry Trees of Rosings shall make you laugh and cry in equal measure. And wonder: Will our favourite couple find their happy ever after?
Spoiler: Yes, they will!
This Pride and Prejudice variation features our favourite Regency romance couple from Jane Austen's original classic in a somewhat spooky setup. ✨ But fear not, dear readers! ✨ This story is not scary in the least. Prepare for a chuckle fest and abundant cups of tea!

EXCERPT ONE:
“Mr. Collins, you know how I despise green beans!”
Lady Catherine’s brows drew down with annoyance as she looked over the tiny list Charlotte had handed her a few moments ago. It was about the gift baskets the Collinses were tasked with distributing for Easter; one of the yearly tasks of the parsonage.
“You shall not present that vegetable to the congregation,” she emphasized, mouth twisting into a moue of distaste.
Mr. Collins nodded his head vigorously. “Indeed, your ladyship.”
“Potatoes will do very well. Very well, indeed…”
More head nodding from her cousin.
Elizabeth held back a chuckle as the spectacle unfolded before her.
She had been somewhat right in her estimation of Lady Catherine from Mr. Collins’ extensive effusions. But once the introductions were made, she was pleasantly surprised to find that the great lady was even more ridiculous than she had imagined. Her father would be dearly entertained by such human folly once she wrote to him.
“Potatoes are vegetables for the hard-working,” Lady Catherine continued sagely. Then she picked up a cream tart from the platter before her and bit into it.
“You are quite right, your ladyship, as always,” Mr. Collins said. “I merely wished to place the beans in the baskets for the sick—”
“You should speak on the virtues of potatoes in your sermon, Mr. Collins,” the lady said, dusting off the crumbs from her fingers before fixing a glare on her parson.
AUTHOR BIO & LINKS:
Morgan loves exploring themes of personal identity, inner strength, social discourse and hope alongside enduring love in her stories. She also believes that strong heroes and heroines are not enough to make a tale worth telling. They need a supporting cast of good and not-so-good characters that add more punch and vibrancy... and some dramatic ridiculousness!
Morgan is a cat friend, tropical girl who prefers winter clothes, perennial fantasy/historical fiction nerd, and a night owl.

EXCERPT ONE:
Summer Sunrise
Sunrise in the mountains is a majestic and moving sight
It undresses the cloak of darkness and brings the world light To the east a rosy blush begins as earth embraces the dawn Curtains of night are lifted and its shadows soon withdrawn
Tendrils of light steal down the cavernous canyons tall Like fingers of liquid lava running down a volcano wall
Caressing the cliffs and painting a sheen on their snowy faces An artist’s hand and a pastel palette touching many places
Tree by tree tree the forest takes on a new found tinge The seas too are painted from their centre to their fringe
A kaleidoscope of colour as you watch the masterpiece unfold With subtle grace and beauty like an alluring dream untold
Rays of sunlight kiss the soft belly of the fluffy clouds Brushing them with chameleon colours endlessly endowed The world awakens in the sun’s tender soft-hued glow, Each ray a promise, a new day of heartfelt hope to sow.
From darkness to light, there is a magical transition A celestial ballet in a splendid and stately exhibition The wind seems to whisper softly dispelling all fears As a chorus of songbirds add their comforting cheers
The sun ascends faster now as purples turn to gold Bringing its welcoming warmth and dispelling the cold The sky is suddenly ablaze with the early morning light Finally vanquishing the demons of the daunting night
Enjoy Nature’s peace and grandeur as it percolates within Let your heart be touched and feel a solemn serenity begin Cast aside your worries, your troubles and your woes
As renewal begins and a blissful energy soon flows
