Wind and solar have increased by 1448 TWh between 2010 and 2018.  To replace all fossil electricity generation, we need 11 times that eight-year effort.  If the deadline is 2050, this seems possible but would be difficult.

“These came for you,” said Abigail, the oldest of his younger sisters. At eight, she was already smarter than him in many ways. She turned the envelope upside down over his bed. A pair of prescription, steampunk- inspired goggles tumbled out. Still ignoring Atticus’s prior demand, she settled on the window seat.

“I thought they’d never get here!” His previous statement forgotten, Atticus sat up and took off his glasses. He then slipped the leather strap of the goggles over his head and pulled to tighten them to a perfect fit. He raised his chin, wise and prepared, able to spot danger in a single glance.

“How do I look?”

“Like a weirdo.” Abigail pulled her honey-brown hair into a high ponytail. “Or a praying mantis.”

He should have known she wouldn’t recognize functional accessories if they stared her in the face.

“Did you have to get green frames?” she asked.

“I like green.”

“I think you look smart,” said Evie, the youngest of the Everheart children. She was a miniature version of Atticus, from her curly brown hair, round cheeks, and scrawny arms, right down to her bulbous big toes and curious nature. “Why are there round thingies sticking out from the side?”

“Those are monocles.” Abigail opened the newspaper to the comic section. “They magnify things.”

“These aren’t ordinary monocles,” said Atticus. “I can’t believe you think I’d want goggles if they didn’t do something spectacular. I’ll have you know these are the most advanced pair of monster-seeing goggles available, able to cut through the mundane to reveal beasts and demons, ghosts, and goblins.” At least, that’s what the ad had said. Atticus flipped down the crimson lens. “This one’s for flesh-eating monsters.”

“Oh, they’re way cool!” Evie inched closer and asked, “Do you see any?”

“Yes!” Atticus lunged forward and grabbed her, tickling her waist.

Describe Your Book Cover and How It Came About?

Can I begin with how cute this cover turned out? I can say this because all the credit goes to my talented cover artist Diana Carlile. She does such a great job of incorporating tiny details that add the perfect finishing touches. She never fails to exceed my expectations.

I got to provide some input. Like all my books, I filled out a cover art form, noting the tone of the book and my vision for the cover.

Here are the notes I gave to Diana:

I think a cartoon cover would work nicely. Something kids 8-12 would like. For the title, I always envisioned it to read “Atticus Everheart, Fifth Grade Tutor” in one font and then “and Monster Hunter” in a different font as if it was penciled in by a kid.

We might see the inside of a manor near a staircase. On the wall could be old pictures of people who look like Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. (Drago’s family members are the monsters from the old movies.)

If we see Atticus, we might see the back of him. He rides his skateboard to the house each morning and never goes anywhere without his backpack. Or, Atticus could be facing the reader with a puzzled expression like he can’t believe he’s hunting monsters.

You can see why I’m delighted with the cover. Diana included everything in a fun and adorable way that is perfect for middle-grade readers.

C.L. Colyer found her love for writing in first grade when her class was sent to the library and asked to find a book for their first book report. While she doesn’t still have this book report, she’s very proud to say she got an A on it. Her favorite thing about the book was that it had no words. That’s right, not one! That gave her the freedom to interpret the pictures in any way she wanted and write her own story.

This sparked her love for writing essays. It wasn’t until she was an adult that she sat down and penned her first novel. This story has a special place in her heart because it’s the story that helped her discover her passion for writing. She has since written several books, many of which may never see the light of day, but all of which helped her learn to combine her passion for writing with her fascination with all things mythical.  You’ll find examples of this in her novels.

Feeling the hotel room being yanked out from underneath her, Cody lost her grip on her temper. “I don’t care. I arrived here first.” She wheeled on Velma. “Tell him.”

Velma had a hard time meeting the man’s glittering green eyes, and Cody feared the worst. “Velma, you have to go with the first person who arrived here, and that was me.”

Velma visibly wavered, and her gaze bounced between Cody, Mr. Never-Had-Any-Patience, and her twin, who looked ready to burst into tears.

“It’s not your fault, Sister.” She patted Delma’s hand. “You didn’t know we were upstairs. I’ll handle this.”

Velma faced her two potential guests and announced, “We’ll flip for it.”

Delma immediately beamed.

“What?” Cody cried.

“Fine by me,” the stranger snapped and crossed his arms on his oversized and quite muscular pecs. Not that Cody was staring.

Velma reached into her apron pocket and drew out a silver dollar. She smiled at Cody. “Since you were here first, you can call it, and you can have heads if you want. I always liked heads in a coin toss, and I always got lucky calling heads.” Her eyes twinkled at Cody.

“Fine. Heads it is,” Cody said.

The coin flipped high in the air. Velma deftly caught it with her right hand and smacked the coin on top of her left. “Heads it is,” she proclaimed.

Cody blew out a sigh of relief.

“Hey, wait a minute,” the stranger complained.

“See for yourself.” Velma angled her hand for him to snatch a glimpse and then chucked the coin back into her pocket.

Cody stared him right in the eye. “I win.”

He eased closer—almost nose to nose—and she reconsidered her idea to gloat. His emerald eyes darkened, turned almost black, and locked onto hers. She could hear and feel each breath he took, because she held hers. Waiting.

“Share it with me.”

His gaze never wavered. She could feel it, almost like a caress.

“I promise I won’t touch you . . . if you don’t want me to.” The latter implied he wanted exactly the opposite.

Petie spent a large part of her career working at Walt Disney World—"The Most Magical Place on Earth"—where she enjoyed working in the land of fairy tales by day and creating her own romantic fairy tales by night, including her new series, The Cinderella Romances. "Move a bit to the left."

"I just did that. Can't you tell?"

"If you don't move the chair, the table won't fit."

Mac stood back and examined the placement of the furniture. That's what he got for getting square tables to fit into this new shop. He had round ones back at his coffee bar in Bristol Hills. They fit better and made it easier for customers to navigate.

"Of course, it'll fit," Zora said, obviously exasperated. "Just shove it into that gap there."

"When you talk like that I get excited." He hoped to lighten the mood and get her smiling again.

"You're always excited." Wiping her hands on her white t-shirt, she left smudges down the front. "It's almost midnight. Can we go now?"

It was his fault that they were here moving furniture and as-sembling shelves. After putting in a 10-hour day at the shop back in Bristol Hills, they'd come here to get this shop ready for the grand opening. Now after almost five hours of moving chairs and tables around, they hadn't made much of a dent.

Sure he could hire someone to do this, but it was his responsibility. He had to get it done himself to make sure it was done right. "Babe, let's just put another table together. After that we can go."

"Another table? We've already done six of them, Mac. There are six more in those boxes back there." She pointed to the door leading to the storage room. "I can barely see straight. We've got four weeks until this place opens, we can't do it all in one night."

"I know that," he snapped. As much as he didn't want to admit it, she was right. How much could two human beings do? Well, one human and one lion shifter

"Okay. You're right. Let's close up and go home."

Instead of replying, Zora rolled her eyes and headed through the doorway leading to the storage room and office.

What was wrong now? Once she started the eye rolling, it usually meant trouble. She should've been pleased that he agreed with her.

Mac locked the front door, then took a moment looking over the shop before he turned off the lights. Soon there would be posters covering the light brown walls and a chalkboard on the wall behind the counter. Once that was done, and the chairs and tables were arranged, they'd move in the machines and cases to display the deserts and sandwiches. Little by little, it was coming along.

Zora was waiting for him by the back door. Propped up against the wall, her eyes half-closed, she looked like she was about to fall asleep on her feet. Her normally sparkling brown eyes were red and watery, and when she reached up to smooth her curly hair off her face, he noticed a couple of broken nails.

She looked so weary he was tempted to pick her up and carry her to the car. Since he'd met her five months ago when she'd come into Mac's Coffee Bar, he'd been in love and in lust. What he'd never expected was that the woman he'd met that day, and hired as an assistant manager, would end up becoming his mate. After all his years as a nomad lion shifter, he'd finally found the perfect woman to settle down with.
