When we closed the front door, Dad yelled from above, “How was it? Was it better today?” before he could see that Hollis was with me. When he appeared, I could tell he was sorry he’d asked.

After an awkward silence, I said, “Nope. Lexie Cross is a—” and I used the same ugly word Stick had used to describe my grandmother.

Hollis burst out laughing.

Dad didn’t. But he did play board games with us. And once we’d discussed everything that had happened, he said, “People can and will say all the garbage about you they want...doesn’t make it true. Definitely doesn’t make it kind or necessary.”

I nodded.

Hollis looked like she was deep in thought until finally she said, “It still hurts.”

Dad said, “Of course it does. But you can’t change anyone else. Your power in this situation comes from deciding how important to make Lexie’s opinion.”

Hollis smiled a little and moved her game piece.

Dad stared at the board until his eyes got huge. “You just won again, didn’t you?”

Hollis giggled and covered her mouth in embarrassment.

Dad slumped against the back of his chair and smiled. “Think of Lexie as your opponent in a game...and assume she’s going to continue saying these things. You’ve got to try to stay a step ahead of her. Don’t let her get away with it. Fight back!”

MY BOOK REVIEW:

This book is an incredible, inspiring, strong emotional, and with all the feelings kind of read!!

I absolutely love this book’s messages and the overall story line!!  I love that the author is shinning a bright light on bullying and showing there should be zero tolerance – no exception.

If you are a regular follower on my book reviews, you won’t find it surprising that I chose to read, review, and host this book tour.  I have always had strong feelings about this topic and truly appreciate authors like Lindsay G. P. Bell helping lead the charge to create safe places for all children and not permit these horrendous bullying acts to continue to occur.

I was completely swept up in this story as I read and finished this book in just a mere few hours.  I couldn’t look away even as tears dripped down my face reading the last few chapters.  Even though I knew ahead of time, as it’s mentioned in the book blurb, tragedy was imminent and was quickly approaching as I was nearing the end of the story.  And regardless of fair warning, the sadness, heartbreak, and sorrow came flooding across the pages as I reached the inevitable conclusion.

This book starts out with Abby, a sweet, young 13-year-old girl, and her father getting settled into their new home as they just relocated to South Carolina from California.  While unloading boxes they observe a girl, Hollis, getting pulled and well, dragged away by a big stray dog she was trying to capture and take home.  Abby jumps in to help, and the two girls instantly become friends.  A very sweet meet cute indeed!

The first half of this book is devoted to the new friendship between Abby and Hollis and their fun, exciting, and ever so entertaining adventures that take place over the summer.  The second half of the book focuses on the beginning of the school year, adjusting to a new school, and the bullying events that lead up to and ultimately cause one of the girls to commit suicide – known more technically as bullycide.

While at first I was surprised that the suicide occurs at the very end of the book, and nothing is mentioned or hinted to that final outcome.  I assumed this book would use “look back,” writing as it reflected on the bullying events and how it led the character to choose bullycide.  This is not the case, but I must admit I think I enjoyed this writing style set up more as it gave the reader a better chance to get to know Hollis.  It’s hard to not to totally fall in love with this sweet, smart, charming, polite, adorable, kindhearted, considerate, animal lover, who just truly seems like a girl you’d wish you were friends with.  At least the big animal lover in me couldn’t help but awe and smile at the kind and loving help and support she was providing local wildlife.  Not to mention all the people she also went out of her way to assist and take care of.  Hollis had a big heart filled with so much love wanting to help others.  She was the type of person who actually made a difference every day and made the world a better place.  Her selflessness was inspiring, encouraging, and touching!!  When the school year begins, and it’s revealed that Hollis is the main target of bullying I just wanted to hug Hollis and tell her it’s going to be okay.  It was hard not to feel the pain of every horrendous bullying act against Hollis and Abby.  The viciousness of the three mean girls, Lexie, Ava, and Leah were crude, cruel, and obscene.  These girls attacked Hollis and Abby physically, mentally, and emotionally.  And not surprisingly they receive very little discipline for their actions, even when it becomes clear that their behavior directly led to their victim's bullycide.

The bullying behavior mentioned in this book includes religious, cultural, racial, socioeconomic, and disability-related slurs and insults.

Unfortunately, this book is written thirty plus years ago, when bullying was still considered just a part of growing up.  Girls will be girls; boys will be boys’ kind of thing.  And in a small town like fictional Kissimah, talk is cheap, and you can’t escape the gossip or unfounded rumors.

This book tells a beautiful, but tragic story about two best friends being bullied which ultimately leads to one of the girl’s seeing no way out and choosing bullycide as her only way to escape the torment.   No child should ever experience bullying, harassment, or discrimination, especially at school – a place where they should feel safe, focusing on higher education, making friends, developing social skills, and striving to reach their highest potential.

This book has fantastic characters, that are so well written, realistic, and relatable.  Many times, I felt like I could have been reading about me and my friends when we were kids, running around our small town going on exciting, silly adventures.

This book is also filled with many enjoyable LOL moments!!  I loved the Dolly Parton references, especially Abby’s dad’s yard sale t-shirt, or really all of his amusing outfits lol!!

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it!!  I think all young adult readers will like this book too!!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading – you won’t be disappointed!!

EXCERPT ONE:

I was diagnosed with Sézary syndrome (a rare blood cancer) in 2016. It is notoriously difficult to diagnose, and at that point I estimated that I had had it for about 11 years. At least, that was when the itch began.

I was living in London and had a touring job: as principal viola with English National Ballet I spent four or five months each year on the road. I imagined little piles of skin and blood on bedlinen all over the country as I manically scratched night after night with no idea what ailed me. Once, the itch gave me two days respite, and I spent hours wondering what could have changed and how I could repeat that blissful itchless experience. I experimented with everything, but, of course, nothing worked. You cannot cure cancer by changing your washing powder.

I left London late in 2006 and returned to Australia to live in Hobart. Eventually, I took my itch to the doctor. She told me to take antihistamines. When I went back to tell her they didn’t work, she advised me to take more. I finally begged her for a referral to a dermatologist. Reluctantly, she agreed. I think her private opinion was that I was making a fuss about nothing, but she couldn’t say so. The dermatologist was not much more helpful, so I just carried on scratching.

Eventually, my feet and ankles became twice their rightful size and were covered in unsightly sores. Unable to wear shoes and desperate for answers, I changed my GP. He ordered blood tests for everything, and eventually Sézary was diagnosed. I didn’t much like the diagnosis, but it was good to know what it was.

It was also good to finally be taken seriously and not treated as an irritating hypochondriac who was taking valuable treatment time away from people who were actually sick. I now had a whole team of doctors who treated my comfort as a priority. They even respected me for managing to carry on working with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO) despite a constant itch that seemed to go right through to the bone. Respect—imagine!

The Story Behind My Book Cover

I provided Tellwell with the calligraphy, the title, and a very vague idea of what I wanted the cover to look like, and their designer created something miraculous. From memory, I said ‘mostly dark, with a few pops of light.’ Imagine my joy when the first draft was sent to me: it was better than I could possibly have imagined. No revisions necessary. Perfection.

First, the calligraphy. Gemma Black, the calligrapher, is a very dear friend. She teaches all over the world and is renowned in her field. I expected her to be very expensive, but it didn’t matter. I wanted my book to be a thing of absolute beauty—people living with cancer, and those that care for them, deserve no less. My wish was that the poetry of Maya Angelou, Garth’s wonderful photographs, and Gemma’s calligraphy would transform my humble words into a gift. I think they do, right from the front cover, which heralds what is to come. In the event, neither Gemma nor Garth was expensive—they both chose to donate their services to a book that they thought would provide solace for many. In an attempt to match their generosity, I have chosen to donate $1 from each book sale to Cancer Research.

When I was first diagnosed, my mind became dark for a while. I didn’t identify this as fear, anxiety or depression; it was just a place that needed to be explored. The front cover of the book captures this more beautifully than I had could have articulated. The mountains, valleys, and waves of various dark tones are a great representation of my inner world. Being there was a choice—there was much to discover. A bit like sitting at home in the dark, knowing that at any time I could switch on some lights: I didn’t feel imprisoned in this darkness, or unhappy in it. Somehow I knew that, as with the light switch, I would be able to find illumination when I wanted it.

Subtly graded towards a heart of brilliance, the cover depicts a light with a never-ending depth, and a person (me?) poised to begin the process of being drawn in. This has been cancer’s gift to me—an ongoing discovery of the light in my inner landscape. It’s not a journey that has an end; rather, the further I go the more wisdom and truth I find within myself. I’m sure this is not everyone’s experience of cancer. Some people are too ill, too drained of energy, too close to death, to be aware of anything except their suffering, and what they have lost. Others seem to be fueled by a superhuman energy, and decide to tick off as many items on their bucket list as they can manage. I have chosen a more contemplative route, and I have been so lucky that my introduction to my own mortality has been relatively gentle.

It is notable, I think, that the darkest of the dark landscape lies behind the figure. Once the darkest reaches of the mind have been explored they will, perhaps, never again be quite so impenetrable.

I’m quite sure that someone idly picking up the book in a bookshop will never read all this into the cover, but I hope there is enough suggestion of it to inspire them to keep reading.

Panicked, Megan reached the open door. Just as she was about to enter, she crashed headlong into a chest. A very large, very male chest.  Immediately a strong hand grasped her shoulder, helping to steady her as she rocked back from the impact. Breathless, she looked up. The strangers eyes were startling, an icy blue mixed with slate. “Extraordinary,” she thought, fascinated by their hue.

“Are you ok?”  the man asked, his brow furrowed in concern.

“What?” Megan babbled, staring up at him, completely unable to form a cohesive thought.

“This is exactly why you’re still single,” she thought, still mute. Just then Lucy began barking furiously. Horrified, Megan observed her errant dog as she ran deliriously over the stranger's very expensive leather couch. Her tongue hung almost to her feet as she trailed drool joyously. The man had turned away from her, both of them staring incedulously.

“Is that your dog?” he asked without turning.

“That dog?” Megan squeaked. “No. I mean yes, yes of course she is,” then, pushing past the stranger, Megan ran towards Lucy who wasn’t the least bit concerned by the murderous look on Megan’s face.

The Obstacles I Faced Writing Megan’s Choice:

I chose this topic because it means the most to me. There are very few of us, I believe, who have not felt fear when venturing on a new career path. For me, however, it was so much more. For most of my life, beginning when I was just a young girl, I have wanted to write, and I did. But, I would never allow others to read my work. Not anyone. I kept all of my journals, all of my short stories, all of my innermost thoughts, very close to my heart. Fear drove me underground and I remained there. Then, last year, I lost someone very close to me to cancer. I myself am a survivor so this hurt that much more. Many of us who attain remission carry some guilt and often wonder why we were spared. I thought about my own journey, I thought about how short life was and I realized that the only failure there is lies in never trying. I guess when I truly looked inward, it felt cowardly and I refused to run from my fear another day. So, I sat down and began Megan’s Choice. It was inspired by a rescue, Lucy, because in setting out to finally go for my dream, she came to mind. She is no longer with me physically, however, she is in my heart always. Lucy saved me. The greatest obstacles existed inside of me. It was fear of failure, fear of disappointing my family, fear of rejection. My greatest success in Megan’s Choice will remain first and foremost, writing it. Then, submitting it. The rest, as they say, is the cherry on top. I no longer fear putting myself out there, not in any area of my life. The greatest love is learning first to love yourself. If you can do that, really do that, you have already won, at life.

AUTHOR BIO:

Darci Garcia is a contemporary romance writer with a penchant for including members of the animal kingdom in her stories. Although she studied business, her first love has always been the written word.

She believes a sense of humor can cure most anything and laughs at herself most of all.

An animal rights activist, she has spent most of her life working behind the scenes assisting in the rescue of dogs.

These days you will find her in sunny Florida, although she was born and raised in New England, which, she maintains, still holds her heart. She is living out her own happily ever after along with her husband, children and of course her rescues which, at last count, equaled five!

EXCERPT TWO:

“I think my guardian angel is off for the Fourth.” The detective studied the cloudless sky and tried not to think about his foot. It didn’t work. “Just use the crowbar to break one of these frickin’ stones loose.”

The jack handle didn’t do the trick. Opening the trenching tool and using the pick end, Thacker swung it against the largest stone. It bounced off the surface.

Rory suppressed a scream as pain shot from his knee down his encased leg. “Easy!”

“Sorry, boss.”

“Try removing one of the outer stones. Loosen them, and maybe we’ll be able to budge these. I’ll hold the light, and you make room for these damn jaws to unclasp. Try finding the cornerstone.”

A fine layer of perspiration covered Rory’s face. He felt defeated and a little nauseous. He leaned back on his elbows and looked at the sky. “Thacker,” he said, “this is damn unlucky.”

The rookie moved down the mound to the edge of the pile. Using the crowbar and a lot of muscle, he attacked. Finally, he was able to roll one stone out of position. Then another. He was still three feet from Rory’s crevice, working his way toward the more enormous boulders and Rory’s ultimate freedom, when the rock he was prying loose rolled out of place. He hesitated. “There is something funny here, boss.”

“I could use a good laugh.”

“Not ha-ha funny, peculiar funny.” “Tell me anyway.”

“There’s someone else in this rock pile.”

My Writing Space

My writing space is a 10’x10’ bedroom converted to a writer’s office. Each wall is a different shade of deep pink. It has a door, although I rarely need to close it. I have a scarred executive desk that practically fills the space wall-to-wall under a double-wide, double-hung set of windows. The windows overlook a sun-bleached, weather-worn, wooden fence. A bird feeder stood between it and the house in the past, offering a pleasant view while wrens fluttered, doves fed, and I pondered the next scene of my WIP. Unfortunately, a pesky squirrel put a stop to all that.

On the desk sits my primary writing device, a desktop computer with a large monitor and printer. Framed pictures from a cruise, my sister and me in vintage saloon-girl garb, and assorted family pictures sit on a shelf. The photos share the space with cherished gifts I’ve received from friends, a hummingbird in stained glass, a lobster Christmas tree decoration, an angel figurine, and a cardinal in a nest. In addition, there are two filing cabinets and three bookcases within easy reach and drawers filled with stationery supplies and sundry.

My black, American shorthair, Cleo, usually claims pride of place on a closed laptop. Unless I’m on a Zoom call, and then she likes the keyboard or a spot between me and the camera.

Radio with a CD player is handy, but I rarely listen to it or the internet radio. Instead, I can hear Marshall Dillon's voice coming from the other room most mornings. Sometimes it is The Virginian or Jess Harper, but usually Matt and Miss Kitty. The sound is like the gentle patter of rain against the window, and it gives me a sense of comfort and safety.

The high-backed office chair I acquired when the Elks Lodge closed still meets my needs. On the floor in the desk kneehole, I keep a portable safe that I use for a footstool. My writing space walls display numerous pictures, a whiteboard, and calendars—just like the rest of the room, cluttered.

Yet, this writing place suits me dandy. It is my sanctuary, my special place.
