The Secret Cottage
by Kate Ellington

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

Isabel Tate yearns for the simple pleasures she took for granted before scandal rocked her family two years ago. On May Day, she's determined to forget her troubles and enjoy herself at the Claremont family's annual festival.

Meanwhile, Robert Claremont steels himself to begin courting the haughty heiress next door, but his bashfulness is only one obstacle to winning her hand. Despite a deep sense of family obligation, he dreams of choosing his own bride.

Captivated by each other from the moment they meet, Robert and Isabel are kept apart by a misunderstanding until a chance encounter leads to friendship and more.

With opposition on all sides, they must overcome inconceivable odds to claim happiness.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT THREE:
When Robert reached the manor he crossed the echoing great hall and mounted the curved staircase to the second floor. He strolled through the long gallery under the painted eyes of the many Claremonts who had lived here before him. Thornwood Manor had been home to Robert's family for generations. Originally a mere fortress, it had undergone countless changes over the centuries. At the end of the gallery Robert pushed aside a tapestry and followed the corridor leading to his father's rooms in the most ancient wing of the house. The dark stone walls and perpetual chill suited his father well.
Mr. Claremont didn't look up when Robert entered the room but remained sitting at his desk, reading a letter.
“You wanted to see me, Father?” Robert prompted after some minutes.
His father tucked the letter into a drawer and removed his spectacles, fixing his gray eyes on Robert. With his dark hair, tall stature and rugged features there was no mistaking who Robert took after. His brother William had inherited the fair hair and almost unearthly beauty of their mother.
“I've engaged an artist to paint your and William's portraits. He writes that he’ll arrive next week.”
Robert nodded. “I presume that's not all you summoned me here to tell me?
Mr. Claremont stood and walked to the fireplace, hands clasped behind his back. After gazing into the flames for a moment he turned to Robert. “Margery Penrose will be here today. I want you to win her.”
“Win her? Surely she'll have some say in the matter."
AUTHOR BIO:
Kate grew up in a woodsy New England town where summer days at the lake seemed to last forever. She read her first historical romance at age eleven when a teacher challenged her to find a book in the library written by an author she’d never heard of. Thus began a life-long love of love stories.
After graduating from college with an art degree she settled in the Pacific Northwest, where she currently resides with her family.
Kate wrote her first romance when she was sixteen, then set her pen down for years until another story floated into her head out of the clear blue sky. She jotted it down, just for fun, but soon it took on a life of its own.
Jane Austen Lied to Me by Jeanette Watts - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!
Jane Austen Lied to Me
by Jeanette Watts
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Romantic Comedy Audiobook

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
What college girl doesn’t dream of meeting Mr. Darcy? Lizzy was certainly no exception. But when Darcy Fitzwilliam comes into her life, he turns out to be every bit as aggravating as Elizabeth Bennett’s Fitzwilliam Darcy. So what’s a modern girl to think, except....
How could my hero be so wrong?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

Sept 5

Well!  That was interesting.  My roommate invited me along to this frat party she was going to.  She went through something called rush week, and she is now pledged to a sorority.  She said the frats are less formal than the sororities, and even though I wasn’t a pledge I could go with her.  I figured, why not, it should be fun, right?

I got to meet the guy she’s chasing.  I couldn’t blame her for being interested.  He’s cute, and sweet, and considerate, and a total people-pleaser.  One of his parents must be the demanding sort who is never happy.

He introduced us to his friend… whose name is Darcy Fitzwilliam!  I wasn’t sure at first that the guy wasn’t just pulling our legs.

“Your mother obviously loves Jane Austen,” I laughed.

“Obviously,” he answered.  Not much to go by.

“I love Pride and Prejudice,” I continued.

“I hate Pride and Prejudice,” I can only describe the look he was giving me as hostile.

“I think you will find yourself very much in a minority,” I answered, returning his look with one of my own.

We didn’t talk any more that night.  Talk about getting off on the wrong foot!

GUEST POST:

Inspired by Headlines: How to Put Your Spin on Real Life Events

I absolutely adore fitting current events into my stories!

Usually, my books are historical fiction. Wealth and Privilege and Brains and Beauty are set in Pittsburgh between 1875 and 1889, I relied heavily on newspapers in the process of researching both books, and I use the current events I found to tell my readers where in time we are.

For example, the railroad riots of 1877 started in Pittsburgh on July 21. Garfield’s assassination in 1881. (July is clearly a good month for bad things happening. In January of 1885, the Liberty Bell really did pass through Pittsburgh on its way to the World’s Fair in New Orleans. When I needed to kill off a character, why just have some random fake accident, when there was the Washburn A mill explosion in Minneapolis? And of course I talk about the Johnstown flood.

These are all real events, in real time, and they tell my readers precisely what the date is, besides being the most awesome world-building. I learned this from Margaret Mitchell and Gone With the Wind: why make things up when my characters can be perpetually running for their lives through hair-raising real historical events?

I expanded this in Brains and Beauty to include events beyond the headlines: the heroine sings music from the latest Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. In both books, I frequently use clothing. What would a man’s reaction have been the first time he sees the radical change in women’s fashion in 1877, and for the first time in 50 years, skirts hugged along a woman’s hips and thighs?

My other modern novel, A Woman’s Persuasion, is sent in 2007. I chose the dates specifically because of current events. I used the crash of 2007 is a catalyst for the story, to mirror the financial troubles of the characters in Jane Austen’s Persuasion.

For Jane Lied to Me I had to very consciously make the opposite choices. Jane Austen’s stories are very timeless, in order to embrace that I wanted to say as little as possible about time and place, even as I emulated her trick of saying as little as possible about each character’s appearance. (What color ARE “fine eyes?”)

The story is about the all-American girl, set on an undefined college campus.

Is this campus in the Midwest? In the south? New York state? In Colorado? Arizona? Minnesota? I never discuss the landscape, or describe the buildings. This could be an Ivy League school, a little private school, or a big university sprawling across miles. I wanted people to be able to see their own college in their mind’s eye as they are reading.

This also applies to the time. All the markers I usually use to tell everyone when this is, I carefully avoided. I tried to stay as vague as I could about the clothing although I am taking a gamble of high heeled shoes are not going to go away anytime soon. When the characters go to concerts, it’s to hear Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, or a group with a long-running history (Metallica). My heroine has jobs at the school library and McDonald’s.

I do not bring up any current events. There are no news stories, no references to any events going on at all. I was trying to uncouple the story from a specific place in history.

I like to think, for the most part, I succeeded. The thing that is going to date most rapidly, and set it within a timeframe, is the technology. Phones and laptops change. At least, for now, people still use their phones to text back-and-forth, although I have had any number of conversations entirely over Snapchat, or Discord, or Messenger, or Marco Polo. So plain ol’ text may already be in danger of feeling dated. At least, for now, students still get online to register for classes, right?

Letters From A Warrior, P.S. Mom, I Love You by Dale E. Dallman - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

Letters From A Warrior,
P.S. Mom, I Love You
by Dale E. Dallman

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Non-Fiction Military History
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

"Letters From A Warrior, P.S. Mom, I Love You" is a captivating true story full of adventure and self-discovery. It is portrayed with a relentless wit that offers an intimate glimpse into the world of the US Marine Corps Boot Camp in 1960. This is all done through the eyes of a young man who trades his small-town roots in Minot, North Dakota for the thrilling and challenging life of a Marine.

Through a series of unapologetically honest and unintentionally humorous letters to his mother, the author shares his unvarnished experiences as a naive 18-year-old navigating the tribulations of boot camp. With the specter of his seemingly menacing drill instructors looming large, this young man's quest for a life beyond his hometown quickly becomes a rollercoaster of exhilaration, fear, and personal growth.

Witness the author's transformation from a small-town boy to a dedicated warrior as he overcomes adversity and learns invaluable lessons about courage, resilience, and the true meaning of strength. From his first day at the MCRD to his thrilling new beginning in Hawaii, this unforgettable memoir stands as a testament to the power of determination and the indomitable spirit of youth.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT THREE:
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't ever send me anything but mail. DO NOT SEND FRUIT, CANDY, NUTS, POPCORN, or anything other than paper! Only paper letters. Don't even put perfume on the letters. PLEASE. Tell anyone who knows me not to send anything. Tell Peggy not to bake me anything, PLEASE!
Vacky and a guy from Chicago got packages today at mail call. Vacky got a big box of fudge from his girl, and the guy from Chicago got popcorn balls. The D.I. made each go into the Quonset and get his galvanized bucket. He had them run to the head, fill the buckets with hot water and run back. He made them go three times because they kept spilling the water. He then took a box of salt and dumped half in each bucket. The street in front of our Quonsets is pretty long.
The D.I. had a recruit stand at each end. One with the water bucket, the other holding the sweets. They had to run to the one with the sweets, eat as much as they could, run to the guy with the water and drink as fast as they could. They had to keep this up until all was gone. They started throwing up right away! It just got worse.
We start bayonet training pretty soon. The D.I. said each of us would try to stick him with our bayonet. He said if we missed, he was going to stick us.
I think he is nuts!
One time I want to get out of here, the next time I wouldn't quit if I had to. I can't believe I am starting to like being in the Marines. We really are the best.
We went to a parade and the Navy and Army were there. They march like a bunch of pansies. They have no pride.
LOVE, DALE
Describe Your Book Cover and How it Came About:
Book cover!!
A lot of thought went into the book cover!
First, the name!  It had to be more than words!  "Letters from a Warrior P.S. Mom, I love you, -what in the world does that mean?
We started with the Letters-I kept a journal during my time in Marine Corps Bootcamp.  I broke it down into letters that I sent home as often as I could.  The letters were hidden away for 60 years and no thought about them at all!! Then, in 2011, a flood hit Minot, North Dakota and the timid little Mouse River became a raging wall of water that washed away the family home that I had taken over!  It was swept into the river and gone!  I went into the empty lot after the river subsided and up about 14 feet, in a tree was this trunk!  I retrieved it and there were the letters from the 1960s Marine Corps Bootcamp! The ink had run a little, the color faded but each was readable!
The old hands pictured are the ones of my mother!  She had kept these letters for decades.  I learned later from one of my brothers that when she received a letter, she would gather up Dad, my brothers and the neighbors and read the letter out loud, three times.  I was the first Dallman to go into the military (against my dad's wishes) since my family had immigrated from Germany.  My Grandfather had actually changed the name, by dropping a "n" from it.  It seems he was disturbed about my relative, Col. Ivan Dallmann, who went into the bunker with Hitler!
My mother is why I dedicated this book to EVERY MOM who got a flag back instead of her son or daughter!
The uniformed Marine crawling over the wall!  That actually is me! The funny story behind it!   I was injured in Marine Bootcamp, just as I graduated!  They sent me to a Causality Company to get recuperated!     When I joined the Marines, it was with 58 others from North Dakota.  We were called the NODAK Platoon.  The Governor of North Dakota decided to present a Trophy to the Marine who was high shooter and another for the outstanding man. I actually won both, so the Governor sent a photographer to get a picture of me.  THUS, the Combat Marine crawling over the wall--BUT--like “Paul Harvey and the rest of the story,” They had to help me up on the wall as I was on crutches with two injured legs!
That is what inspired the cover!  I give credit to a GREAT Publisher, Traci Wooden who put it together and Cassandra Dallman Photography who had a hand it!
AUTHOR BIO & LINKS:
Dale E. Dallman, Senior was born on a hot dry day in Britton, South Dakota, just off the Sisseton Indian Reservation, east of Lake Tewaukon, because that was the closest hospital. His relatives all worked for the railroad and/or farmed near Fort Ransom, Cayuga, and Rutland, North Dakota. When his father got the chance to quit farming and transfer to the railroad they moved to Minot, North Dakota where Dale attended grade school at Sunnyside and graduated high school at Minot High.
After Dale and a few of his friends got themselves into trouble towards the end of their senior year, a nice judge “suggested” that he and several of his acquaintances join the United States Marine Corps. The formation of the “NODAK PLATOON” made the timeline fit. The Marines took him to San Diego, California, Hawaii, Asia, and back to San Francisco, California. He grew up fast in the Marines. One of his buddies stuck with him after they were discharged and the two followed each other off and on through life.
His first real job after the service was in Billings, Montana with Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co. as a road salesman.  This led to other road salesman positions with the American Greetings Company and the Bristol Myers Drug Company.  He ventured into real estate, casinos, auto sales, RV sales, which took him to Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota. He became a deputy sheriff in California for a while, then traveled on to Washington, Arizona, Virginia, Germany, and Colorado, to name a few.
Today, Mr. Dallman lives in the South with his wife Cassandra Dallman, a professional photographer and singer out of Atlanta, Georgia.  He enjoys and continues to take great pride in his children and their offspring.
This book is neither his first nor last written work so please check back to see upcoming books from Dale E. Dallman.
The Maker of Worlds by David Litwack - Book Tour - Blurb Blitz - Giveaway - Enter Daily!
The Maker of Worlds
by David Litwack
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:  Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
If you had the chance to remake the world, what kind of world would you choose?
When tragedy strikes Lucas Mack's young life, he desperately yearns to escape its sorrow, and takes an improbable leap through the mythical maelstrom. As he stumbles about trying to find his way, he meets Mia, an equally troubled fellow pilgrim. With the help of a mystical guide and an aging wizard, they navigate the enchanted land while learning to control their newfound powers. Yet this realm is more complex than they expected, with seasoned sorcerers who've been corrupted by the sinister side of magic.
Limited by natural law and seduced by magic's power, they are tested as never before. Will the gift of magic bring renewed hope or drive them to the edge of the void?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

Nowhere a dock or a mooring, not so much as a hint of early morning smoke rising from a chimney. Nowhere the cottages of Queen’s Hill. Nowhere houses at all. As I gaped, the edges of branches shimmered as if undecided whether to remain intangible or become real. In a panic, I realized the folly of this quest. Better to return to a safer, albeit gloomier life, to go back through the portal at once.

Behind me, the maelstrom still swirled, a fleeting comfort as it had started to recede. While I stared at the last link to my old world, the orb diminished, shrunk to a size I could cover with my hand, and then to that of the tip of my thumb. Before I sloshed more than two steps closer, it winked out.

Now, to the north and the south, nothing showed but water. I stumbled to shore, my movements causing the slightest wake in the surface, which lay so still I could make out my astonished features in the reflection.

I’d spent much of my young life with Addy, like a mate sailing across a forever lake. She’d been with me through calm and storm. I’d yearned to find renewed hope on this side of the gateway and return home to a new life, yet now the gateway, like Addy, had vanished.

AUTHOR BIO:

The urge to write first struck at age sixteen when working on a newsletter at a youth encampment in the woods of northern Maine. It may have been the wild night when lightning flashed at sunset followed by the northern lights rippling after dark. Or maybe it was the newsletter’s editor, a girl with eyes the color of the ocean. But he was inspired to write about the blurry line between reality and the fantastic.

Using two fingers and lots of white-out, he religiously typed five pages a day  throughout college and well into his twenties. Then life intervened. He paused to raise two sons and pursue a career, in the process — and without prior plan — becoming a well-known entrepreneur in the software industry, founding several successful companies. When he found time again to daydream, the urge to write returned.

David currently lives in the Great Northwest and anywhere else that catches his fancy. He no longer limits himself to five pages a day and is thankful every keystroke for the invention of the word processor.
