The Anchor

by Kevin R. Doyle

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

The Anchor: Jen has toiled away in television news, just waiting for a big break. And at the same time she finally gets a shot at the promotion opportunity she’s waited years for, head anchor for the nightly newscast, an unseen, shadowy man is desperate for her to notice him. When messages and well wishes don’t do the trick, her mysterious admirer intends to do anything necessary to make Jen a success and snare her attention, even if it means attacking her fiancĂ© and killing off her competition.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
“Package for you,” Aldiss said.
Jen looked down at the plain wrapped bundle lying on her desk.
“Jack do something to make up for?” her deskmate asked.
Jen puffed in exasperation and plopped into her chair.
“What hasn’t he done?” she replied.
Aldiss chuckled and bent over his computer screen.
“How long have you and I shared a desk?” she asked.
“A year or so, give or take,” Aldiss replied, looking up.
“Uh huh. And how long have I been seeing Jack?”
“That you’ve admitted to? Seems like running on a year.”
“Eleven months.”
“Close.” Her coworker turned away and went back to his work.
Jen tapped her fingers on her desk and stared at the bundle. It had a small card attached, but without raising the flap and reading it, it looked like some sort of generic message-type thing.
“And when’s the last time he’s sent me a gift at work?”
Aldiss grinned.
“What’s the package say?” he asked.
“You didn’t look?”
“Hey, bunky, I believe in privacy.”
“Some reporter you are.”
She glanced at the package again, noted that it had come from FedEx, and assumed Tammy had signed for it up at the front desk. Then she flipped the front flap on the little card open.
“Hmm.”
Aldiss glanced up from his work but didn’t say anything.
Jen snared some scissors out of her desk and cut the paper open.
“Obviously, somebody thinks my current diet’s unnecessary.”
He looked up again, his brows raised.
Jen held up a box of Russell Stover chocolates.
“Card not from him?”
Jen shook her head.
“Say who it’s from?”
She held the card up eye level.
“In appreciation of all your service to the community,” she recited.
“Doesn’t sound like a new lover.”
“I hope not. I’d like to think I’d know if I was seeing someone new.”
Aldiss furrowed his brow.
“You done any story lately that’s been big time?”
Jen half glared at him.
“Meaning?”
Aldiss spread his hands out in a placatory gesture.
“Hey, nothing personal. I’m just curious what they mean by service to the community.”
Jen glanced down at the card for a second before looking back up.
“Maybe it’s just a fancier way of saying ‘I like your work.’”
“Or maybe it’s just some creeper who’s got a thing for you. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time a hot news anchor had an admirer.”
Grinning, Jen picked a paper clip off her desk and flipped it at him.
“Far as that goes,” she snorted, “wouldn’t be the first time for me.”
Aldiss picked the clip up from where it had fallen on his desk and tossed it back her way.
“Just imagine if they end up giving you Karyn’s nighttime slot. They’ll be coming out of the woodwork.”
“Thanks,” Jen said. “I’m doing my best not to think of that.”
GUEST POST:
When it came to imagining the setting for The Anchor, I used a similar tactic as I did a few years back when I began the Sam Quinton series. I based the setting for the story around a real place, but changed the name and fictionalized it some.
For the Quinton books, as some local readers have spotted rather easily, Providence, Missouri, is a stand-in for Columbia, my home of the last two decades. While naturally all the place and business names are changed, and the actual facts altered enough to keep me out of court, anyone at all familiar with the Columbia area can spot the inspiration right away.
I did this mainly because the Quinton books are a tad less serious than my other work (a broken-down professional wrestler who works as a private eye? seriously?), and upon dreaming up the series decided I wanted to have a little fun while writing it, at the same time paying a, mostly positive, tribute to my home.
With The Anchor, tonally about as far from the Quinton books as one can get, I decided to go all the way back to my hometown. Once again, anyone at all familiar with the area shouldn’t get too many pages in before identifying Wichita, Kansas, as the real-life equivalent of Riverside.
The similarities are there on both the macro and micro levels. On the macro, there are such inclusions as pointing out that for decades Riverside was known mainly as a hub of aircraft manufacturing (as in Wichita, the Air Capital), and there are a few slight references to the city’s history that I don’t want to give away here, hoping instead that eagle-eyed readers can spot them.
On the micro level, many of the locations of various scenes, including parks and hamburger joints, are based on actual places from my childhood. Though I want to make it clear that the TV station at the heart of the story is not based, as far as I know, on any of the handful of stations that serve the Wichita area.
So what was my main reason to go about developing setting in this way? Was it necessary to fictionalize actual cities for either Anchor or the Quinton books?  Of course not. I could have placed them in generic communities, as I did when writing The Group or The Litter some years back, or I could have gone the standard way and placed the stories in actual, real cities. This way, though, basing on actual locations while changing things up somewhat, added a little fun and curiosity to the stories.
Which, as I had for some inexplicable reason set about writing five books in three years while still somehow working as a full-time teacher, I desperately needed.
EXCERPT TWO:
It seemed odd he would abandon his dream so easily. “You dreamed of going to California and being a surgeon since you were ten. Did you stay long enough to give it a chance?”
Curious over the turn his life had taken, she took a swallow of her cabernet and wondered what brought about the change of heart. “All those beautiful California girls…did one of them break your heart?”
“No. Heart’s still intact. Why?” He pinned her with a hot, slow smile. “Want it back?”
“Of course not.” She tamped on the involuntary sizzle zinging through her body. His sexy smile never failed to get her stirred up. “We’re different people now.” She took a healthy gulp of her soda, hoping it would calm the mad churning in her stomach.
“All grown up, aren’t we? So, tell me.” He gave her a questioning look. “Did you stay in social work?”
“Yes.”  I’m at Fordham Hospital in Manhattan, and I love my job.” Come on, Emma. Wasn’t that tone in your voice a tad defensive? Just because Jake is a medical doctor doesn’t mean your job is any less important than his. It’s not a competition. But, she wasn’t about to admit her job was only part-time, paid a meager salary, and could no longer afford to keep it.
MY BOOK REVIEW:
A wonderful Christmas time story!!
This book is a charming, heartwarming, romantic holiday read filled with engaging characters and second chance story lines.
I enjoyed the main characters, especially Emma.  She is likable and relatable.  I think other readers will be able to easily connect with her fun, sweet, honest, and warm demeanor.
I enjoyed the relationship between Emma and Jake.  The fun, flirty banter between these two was entertaining and lead to many LOL moments!!
There are some predictable scenes.  However, there are still a few unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!!
This book is not listed as part of a book series and therefore can be read as a standalone book.
All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it!!  I think all holiday romance readers and second chance story fans will like this book too!!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading – you won’t be disappointed!!
AUTHOR BIO & LINKS:
People always ask me why I became a writer. I think a writer was always inside me. When I was ten, I started a neighborhood newspaper with a kid's printing press my parents got for my birthday. It was my first gig as a news reporter. After college, as a broadcast major, I was primed and ready for TV news, which satisfied me for a few years, but it wasn't enough.
Sometimes what you are looking for is right in front of you, but you're so busy trying to find yourself you walk right past it. Growing up, I devoured historicals, but contemporary romance became my sweet spot when I started writing. Second chance romances and enemies to lovers are my favorite tropes.
I live with my husband and black Lab, Brody, in coastal North Carolina. We love to go to the beach in all seasons. Brody delights in chasing waves, and our three little grandchildren enjoy shell collecting. I love movies, reading, and exploring seaside villages and am always up for a travel adventure.
Several years later, during a summer break from Stephens College, I was hired as an intern at The Associated Press–a real prize for a broadcast major. Yes, I was in the big leagues now and though I warned myself to keep my "creativity" under wraps– some things you just can't control. This time I got into really hot water by mis-quoting a source. What I'd done was simply re-arrange a few words in a direct quote to make it flow better. Evidently my "re-arranging" altered the source's meaning and he was furious and out for blood; someone's head had to roll. The red-faced bureau chief fired me on the spot, muttering something about me trying my hand at fiction. Lesson finally learned: don't screw with the facts!
After working in TV news for a few years, I moved into commercial production, then freelance writing. Fewer and fewer facts and more creativity. Finally, I was on to something; working my way towards fiction where I could whip up my own batch of facts and no one could call me out.
Four years ticked by and I finally landed—where I should have started, years ago—on the green square clearly marked "fiction writer." What was I thinking all those years? Now, with my feet firmly planted—we are NOT moving again—I'm a full time writer of contemporary romance. With the support of my family and my two office assistants—Gracie, a black Lab and Lambeau, a yellow Lab named after Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers—I spend my days in a world of my own creation where the only facts that matter are the ones I invent. Hopefully, my readers will enjoy my stories as much as I love writing them!
Gods on Trial: The Series - Beyond the Father by Opeshum Patroz - Book Tour - Blurb Blitz - Giveaway - Enter Daily!
Gods on Trial: The Series - Beyond the Father
by Opeshum Patroz
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Sci-Fi

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
“Beyond the Father” sets the scene for the 8-book Sci-Fi Epic “gods on Trial: The Series,” delving into life’s determination to transcend all limitation.  Set on the planet XĹĽyber, citizens of the Sub-Median Region, imperfectly reborn into metal, oppress those who are organic.  Elsewhere, in the Central Kingdom, religion supports royalty’s brutal domination of the lowest class.  War over scarce resources is coming, revolution within each region is brewing, and none know of the eccentric god who created them. This being watches, has fascinating conversations with his often-wiser companion, occasionally learns, and rarely intervenes.  The many levels and threads of struggle distract nearly all from a far greater threat.  Meanwhile, the young Prince Anglid’s vision quest into the unexplored Area X may ultimately change everything.  However, just when you think you know the direction of the story, the author has yet another surprise.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT THREE:

“Are you gonna move, or do I need to have you discharged?” The assignment officer’s voice seemed to pierce through the tender silence. “Get this ‘scunt out of my line!” he yelled, talking to one of the other officers.

Before Purvi could gather herself, she felt an abrupt yank on her shirt as she was pulled out of the line and pushed onto the ground. And before she could determine what was happening, her head was pinned to the ground by the boot of her assailant.

Purvi looked up to see two officers over her, both pointing their weapons, ready to remove her for good.

“I’m sorry! Please—” Purvi said. But then, realizing they were Mollards, and that her pleading would get her nowhere, she quickly used what she knew would save her life. “Thank you for teaching me to respect your power. I detest this flesh of mine. I honor all that is Mollard. I honor you! I honor you! Please…I honor you!”

EXCERPT ONE:

“Watch your left!” shouted the leader of the golden eagles. Before the angel could maneuver to his right, blinding lightning struck across the dark clouds, just missing his left wing. The very next moment, deafening thunder numbed everything. The angel and the accompanying eagles held their nerves and pushed through the expanding wall of clouds. The leader of the eagles anticipated growing dangers and feared they would get lost. He yelled, “I can’t help you if I can’t see where we are going. The storm is escalating into a tornado. We won’t be able to withstand these powerful winds for long. Everyone, move up above the thunderstorm. We’ll resume our journey from there.”

The angel and the eagles listened to the leader’s call and flew up above the clouds. Looking down on the thundering clouds, the leader took a deep sigh of relief. He quickly turned his head toward the others to check their condition. “What happened to your wings?” the shocked leader screamed at the angel.

The angel looked instinctively on his sides. There were no wings but flapping arms. A sudden gush of panic infused in him as he realized he was just a boy and not an angel. Right away, the horrified boy fell into the dark mushrooming clouds, screaming from the bottom of his gut. His arms and legs kept flailing in despair until he disappeared into the dark swirling storm.

The Marriage List

The Worthington Brides Series

Book One

by Ella Quinn

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

By popular demand, USA Today bestselling author Ella Quinn returns Regency England’s beloved extended family, The Worthingtons, for the first in a sparkling new spin-off series! Determined to tame the marriage market on their own terms and make advantageous love matches, three confident sisters draw up a list of qualities they expect their new beaus to meet. But as they are about to discover, people are hardly ever perfect and the road to love is far more thrilling and interesting than they could ever have imagined…

As part of a large, rambunctious family, Lady Eleanor Carpenter has gained some knowledge of what makes a successful marriage. She’s even compiled a list of essential qualifications in a potential husband. John, the Marquis of Montagu, seems of good character (check), with money enough to support a family (check). But what of the many other requirements on her list?

Montagu, meanwhile, believes the key to a comfortable life lies in marrying someone quiet and docile. Yet the one lady who captivates him could hardly be more different to what he envisioned. Lady Eleanor is as opinionated as she is lovely, determined to improve working conditions for coal miners, even at risk to her own safety.

From evenings at Almack’s to carriage rides in Hyde Park, this Season will contain many pleasures—and a few surprises that compel both John and Eleanor to rethink their expectations. For one thing is certain: love will not be defined by any list . . .

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
Elizabeth jumped off the sofa. “Zeus, Posy, come. It’s time to play.”
Madeline rose and shook out her skirts. “We know who those Danes belong to.”
Eleanor laughed. “I suppose it is only fair. We had Duke and Daisy.”
“And we will have our own dogs,” Alice added. “That reminds me. We should make a list of what we want in our husbands.”
Eleanor shot a smile at her twin. That was exactly what she had been thinking.
“What an excellent idea.” Madeline went to the desk and drew out a piece of cut foolscap while Alice and Eleanor took chairs from the round cherry table and moved them to the writing desk as Madeline dipped a pen in the standish. “I think he should be intelligent.”
“Yes.” Eleanor wouldn’t want a dim husband, but there was something even more important. “He should be kind.”
“Oh, indeed.” Alice nodded. “I agree.”
“I as well.” Madeline wrote down the first two qualities. “He must like animals.”
“House animals,” Alice insisted. “Most men like horses and hunting dogs.”
“And children.” Having been raised in a family where the children were never confined to the nursery, Eleanor believed allowing young children around was important.
“Like children more than just the getting of them,” Madeline wrote.
“Make us laugh,” Alice added. “It is not good enough that he has a sense of humor. Most people do to some extent, but the gentlemen we wed must be able to make us laugh.”
“And think that we are funny as well.” Eleanor was glad her twin thought of doing this.
“He must be interested in the plight of the poor and unfortunate,” Madeline added. “Ever since Dotty and Grace started the charities, the rest of our sisters and their husbands have added to them. I wish to do the same, and my husband must support me.”
“I agree,” Alice said.
“I do as well.” That was another good idea. Eleanor would not be happy with a man who did not care about others.
“Good-looking?” Madeline asked scrunching up her face.
Eleanor leaned back in her chair. “Well, I do not want to cringe when I gaze upon him. But his character is more important. Think of Byron and how handsome he is said to be, and he is a complete cad.”
Madeline nodded. “I shall write ‘passable-looking.’”
“That will do,” Alice agreed.
“He must allow me to be myself. I will not have anyone trying to control me.” Eleanor could not think of a worse fate.
“Indeed,” Alice and Madeline said at the same time, then laughed.
GUEST POST:
Hello everyone and thank you Ally for having me on your blog.
Ally very kindly gave me a list of suggested topics, and the one that struck me the most was work life balance. Now you’d think that at the age of sixty-nine I would have had that down long ago, but I’ve never needed to think about it. Mostly because my husband was away from home on business a lot. And then suddenly he wasn’t. And it wasn’t Covid related. Yes, Covid only caused him to work from home, so he was still busy. I probably need to explain our relationship a little. We’ve been together for forty-one years and married for thirty-nine. When he came home, we spent that time together. And it worked until the past year. Then things changed.
He was a year out from retirement (his third retirement so you’d think I’d be used to it by now) and we had to decide where to live. We were stationed in Germany, and we could have stayed there, but Stuttgart is expensive. Nevertheless, we wanted to remain in Europe. Any of you who know me knows I have a boat that we sailed from the Caribbean to Europe on. And we still wanted to sail the Med. The current retirement plan is to sail half the year and be on land half the year. We narrowed our choices down to France and Italy and Italy won. But because we ski, we wanted to be near ski areas. I also had a few more requirements. I’d been living in a place that was walkable, and I wanted to keep that lifestyle, and it had to be dog friendly. We decided on Bozen/Bolzano, Italy. It also had the benefit of being German as well as Italian speaking. In order to be eligible for visas we had to have a long-term rental. In most of Europe, a one year lease is considered short-term. I’d watched the rentals all during Covid, and there were plenty that met our requirements, then the Covid restrictions were lifted, and apartments started going like hot-cakes. Fortunately, I was able to find one, and that’s when my work/life balance started to be a problem. I had book deadlines. I was also gradually moving things from Stuttgart to Bozen (it’s a 4-5 hour drive) and the a major event in Europe caused all my husband’s conferences to be cancelled. But this time he wasn’t busy at work and expected to spend time with me. For the first time I had to ask for a long extension on my deadline. Even then, I had trouble finishing it. So what did I do?
I had to make a realistic schedule and keep it. There needed to be time for work, walking the dog which takes about an hour twice a day, spending time with my husband, Pilates, and weights (50 minutes, and studying Italian. And the schedule had to have a natural flow. My day starts at 6AM. I take my shower, walk the dog, and start working while I’m eating breakfast. I work until I finish one chapter or if I finish it quickly, until noon. Then I exercise and listen to the news while I’m working out. After that I spend an hour on Italian. By then it’s time to take the dog out again, when I get back I spend the rest of the day with my husband. I take weekends and holidays off. Instead of just hoping I’ll finish the book in time, I get out a calendar and map out my workdays and my days off so I know when I’ll be finished with the first draft and can start on the revisions. I just started this schedule a few weeks ago. The book is getting done, my Italian’s getting better, and the dog and my husband are happy.
My motivational statement: Spit in one hand and wish in the other. See which one gets full faster.
And you should read the Marriage List because it’s funny.
