Enemy's Keeper: Forbidden Ties

GENRE:  Young Adult Fiction - Historical

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
1075 A.D. England
Nine years after the Norman Conquest
Orphaned during a rebellion against William the Conqueror, Heather's life is just settling down when her childhood sweetheart disappears to save the son of a murdered Norman knight.
This quarrelsome son, Matthew, is determined to destroy the English rebels who decimated his household. Heather stays out of it—until she is accidentally entangled with a young rebel leader named Toby.
As she is whisked off through the forests of medieval England, inhabited by a dangerous but misunderstood tribal society, Heather is forced to take a side. Her decisions will put into peril everything she holds dear.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

AD 1075 England, nine years after the Norman invasion.

Someone banging on the watermill’s door jolted Heather awake. She struggled to open her eyes. From downstairs, the rapping on the wood was like thunder echoing within the stone walls.

“Marie?” Heather croaked as she sat up.

There was no answer. In the ember’s glow on this crisp October night, she looked next to her and saw that Marie was missing. Heather’s stomach clenched with fear. Marie was a nine-year-old orphan that she had been entrusted to hide in this watermill, safe from Ransley Buckner’s soldiers. But her straw mattress was now empty.

Fists continued to pound on the door downstairs. Heather was on the intermediate level of the building, which didn’t cover the entire lower floor space; it granted her a view of the entryway below. Icy with panic, she pushed to her bare feet and ran for the staircase. Suddenly, what felt like a small boulder slammed into her chest, and Heather gasped. It was Marie, who had covered her nose with both hands in pain. She had already been downstairs.

“Is it Spencer?” Heather cried with a burst of hope. Spencer was her best friend and someone she loved dearly; he had brought Marie to the watermill for hiding. Heather began to hurry down the steps again in her ragged tunic, but Marie grabbed her arm.

“It’s not Spencer,” she murmured, scowling. “I looked through the cracks in the door.”

The large wooden door rattled against its frame with even stronger banging. The plank of wood bolting the door shut jumped within its supporting brackets from the force. Muffled shouting echoed from the other side, and it was not friendly. Although Heather didn’t know who the men were, dread washed down her scalp, feeling like a downpour of needles as she feared the worst. Pushing Marie away, she whispered, “Go hide, now!”

For six days, Heather had sweated over the nightmare scenario of Ransley Buckner’s soldiers finding Marie here at the watermill before Spencer could return. Heather had never wanted to hide the child, but Spencer hadn’t given her a choice; he had simply left the girl on Heather’s doorstep. Buckner and his men had already killed most of Marie’s family in the evolving revolt against William, the Norman duke who had seized the English throne. As a rebel leader, Buckner opposed William’s rule and had targeted Marie’s household for being loyal to the king. Tonight, his men were likely still pursuing the girl.

As Marie scurried into the shadows, Heather’s fingers groped for the dagger around her waist—not that she knew how to fight, but she didn’t dare think about that now.

MY BOOK REVIEW:

This book, “Enemy’s Keeper: Forbidden Secrets,” is an interesting, intriguing, entertaining historical read!!

This book is book one of the Enemy’s Keeper Book Series.  This book is a great opening and start of a new series.  However, full disclosure, this book does end on a cliffhanger and with many questions still unresolved.  So, this book does require an investment into the series, as you’ll want to keep reading to find out what happens.

This book is full of well-detailed and intricate worldbuilding, that at times feel a bit heavy handed, are all important, and necessary to the setup of the series.

I appreciated the author’s extensive well-researched historical content that feels genuine and authentic.

This book is also full of important, valuable themes and lessons such as good vs. evil, doing the right thing, treating others with respect and kindness, working together, unity, justice, equality, and compassion.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it!! I think all young adult readers and historical fiction fans will like this book too!! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading – you won’t be disappointed!!

A match made in heaven? More like a match made in Norville and made to last.

Arthur Burton wants a lover and partner, but no man seems to want to be with the local insurance agent. He’s not the bland two-dimensional man on the billboards, but he hasn’t been given the chance to show his colors.

Summer Rain Davis embodies the bohemian lifestyle. He loves his arts and crafts. He’s always had a thing for the buttoned-up professional types and when he’s set up with Arthur, sparks fly.

Love is possible in a small town if Arthur and Summer Rain are willing to give their romance a try.

Can these two men, seemingly total opposites, find common ground and love to last a lifetime? Or will their differences keep them apart?
EXCERPT ONE:

James plunged the comb into the blue solution and his scissors into the sink. He wiped his hands. “About your dating situation…go to Club Jester on Friday at nine. Dress like you, but be casual. I want you to meet my friend, Summer Rain.”

“A girl?” He’d never heard of anyone named Summer Rain.

“No, he’s a guy.” James removed the cape. “A great guy who ticks your boxes.”

“Named Summer Rain?” It seemed like an odd moniker for a man.

“Yes, and trust me. I have the golden touch.” James picked up a tablet. “Do you want a two-month appointment or six weeks?”

“Six weeks.” He set up his next slot with James, then offered his credit card to pay. “You said nine on Friday night?”

“Yes. Club Jester. His name is Summer Rain. It’ll be great.” James swiped the card. “If you don’t hit it off, then the next appointment is on me.”

He had nothing to lose. “Okay.”

“You’ll be meeting your destiny.” James handed him back the card. “Plus, you look fierce. Any man would be nuts to pass you up.”

He wasn’t sure he believed James, but why not? “You’re right.”

“I know I am.” James winked. “Feel better?”

“I do.” Almost like he could conquer the world. He handed James a twenty as a tip.

“Then there we go. Thank you and I’ll see you in six weeks.” James grinned. “Maybe I’ll have named the dog by then.”

“I’ll bet you do.” Maybe he’d find love by then, too. It couldn't hurt to try.

Freckles: The Dark Wizard

by Jerry Harwood

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  MG Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

At Flame Rock Middle School, you show off your big biceps, post your dimples on InstaWitch, grow a cheetah tail, or use your fairy wings to fly down the hall. For Simon, wearing his peers' opinions can be a literal event. Especially since Simon has the visible mark of a weak wizard... freckles. What will happen when Simon learns he has dark magic and can conjure a dragon? Will he become one of the bullies he hated or choose a different path?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
At least at school Simon was visible. Dean Abacus stood at the front door. He didn’t tolerate middle school foolishness, or at least not whenever he could stop it. As students approached he would welcome them. He would also clear his throat if anyone was out of dress code, had misshapen features, or was trying to pass as some humanoid animal combination.
Dean Abacus harrumphed as one boy walked in. He had tried to hide a pair of eagle wings with a large coat. The coat shrank two sizes as the wings avaporated. Evaporated is when something turns from a liquid into a vapor. Avaporated is when a wizard turns from his or her projected form to the person’s natural form. A person would also avaporate if a local wizard’s or group of wizards’ projection was stronger than the person. Adult wizards seldom had such issues, but young wizards in middle school often found their imagecast informed by others. Adults, such as Dean Abacus, were powerful enough to avaporate any form they thought to be too silly whether it was by the students’ doing or someone else’s. They also tried to keep students from avaporating into anything too dangerous. The dean, while stern, also had a soft side. Dean Abacus tilted his glasses down to the edge of his nose and looked at Simon’s sister.
“Tabitha? Purple hair?”
“Dean, it isn’t against dress code. I mean, what if this was my natural color?”
Dean Abacus smiled and then looked to Simon. “Oh, Simon, how are you this morning!”
“Just glad to be off the bus,” Simon mumbled.
“I didn’t even see you get off the bus. But come on in. You will need to return your color to normal.”
Dean Abacus harrumphed again and Simon watched his faded skin return to its normal, pasty white. As color returned, so did the freckles along his arm. “And those torn jeans will not do.”
The dean pointed his finger and Simon’s jeans mended where the goat had gnawed a hole.
“You boys and your weird fashions,” Dean Abacus said, largely to himself.
Entering the hallway, Simon saw Danzig, and his stomach churned. Simon could see Danzig’s lips curling in preparation to call him names. Simon changed direction and walked over to the corner where the lost and found table was. He shuffled through smelly t-shirts, single socks, and twelve vacuum-packed frogs. He tried to look like he was genuinely looking for something. Danzig, with his buddies Krull and Cedrick, finally made their way down the hall. Simon waited another minute before heading toward his homeroom, just in case the three boys were waiting on him.
MY BOOK REVIEW:
This book, "Freckles: The Dark Wizard," is a fun, intriguing, entertaining, empowering middle grade read!!
This book portrays many strong, valuable life lessons and morals that are sure to teach, inspire, and resonate with young readers.
This book follows Simon, a seventh grader at Flame Rock Middle School. Simon, is covered in freckles, a sign of a weak wizard, which often makes him the perfect bullying target.
I really enjoyed the story line and the author's concept of cleverly crafting a fun and exciting fantasy read full of important, relevant lessons about growing up, individuality, being true to yourself, self-confidence, self-awareness, bullying, peer pressure, and many others.
Mr. Harwood's skills of working with children as a teacher and camp director uniquely allow for him to quickly connect with young readers and create a compelling read they are sure to enjoy.
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it!! I think all young, middle grade readers will like this book too!! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading – you won’t be disappointed!!
Prophet's Debt
by Robert Creekmore
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:  Dark Contemporary Fiction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
At fourteen, Naomi Pace knows she loves her best friend, Tiffany. During the Perseid meteor shower of summer 1993, she finds out Tiffany feels the same, just as they’re outed.
Naomi is sent away to a conversion program in the remote Appalachians of North Carolina, knowing nothing of the horrors that await or the strength they will catalyze.
Escaping into the frigid wilderness, she forges her own destiny. Trapped in hiding, Naomi fights to conquer fear and find her way back to Tiffany.
Taking bloody vengeance to end a cult that tortures and murders children seems impossible, but so is having the guidance of a mythic creature of strength and violence.
Those who hurt Naomi as a girl will come to fear the woman she has become and the path she will tread to find revenge, safety, and Tiffany.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

Moving away, Lesley says in verbal self-defense, “Wait until your father finds out.”

That lands like a tranquilizer dart on a bear. I shift from rage to fear. I’ve done something wholly unforgivable, broken another girl’s arm because she called out my sin. That’s how it will be seen regardless of how I feel about what they call “sin.” Until just now, I was having the most exciting night of my young life. I didn’t feel sin, I felt bonding. I felt the comfort of having someone I love more than anyone else physically close. For those few hours, I thought my life could be like this, but as I watch Lesley stumble away sobbing, it becomes apparent that I was wrong.

Lesley’s car makes a buzzing noise as she zooms away. Tiffany’s eyes are wide when we meet gazes.

“I’ll get the bag,” I say.

I stuff the blankets, canteen, chips, and flashlight back in, leaving the star map behind on the same spot where we had just laid.

“You broke her arm. I can’t believe you actually broke her arm,” Tiffany says, stuttering from fear.

“She was hurting you.”

“But you didn’t have to break her arm.”

“No, I didn’t. I wanted to.”

Tiffany doesn’t seem as offput by this as I expected.

“I love you,” she says.

“Same,” I reply.

I throw the backpack on and reach down to give Tiffany a hand up.

“We have to go somewhere else,” I say, as she rises to her feet.

“Where?”

“Just not here is all I know.”

GUEST POST:

Music That Inspired Prophet’s Debt

~ The Gits, Second Skin

This one is a no-brainer to start with since the book is dedicated to the memory of the band's lead singer, Mia Zapata. The Gits were a fantastic punk group that was active from 1986 to 1993. They are probably one of my favorite bands. I wasn’t around to see them since I wasn’t old enough to go to shows. I wouldn’t find them until the late nineties. Like many bands who began in that era, such as NOFX, The Bad Brains, or Bouncing Souls, I think The Gits would still be around today. The surviving members are still active in the music scene. Unfortunately, Mia was raped and murdered while walking home on July, 7th 1993. She was only 27. Her murderer remained free for another decade. He died in prison last year. Prophet’s Debt is about a woman who takes revenge on those who raped and tortured her when she was a girl. So, I think it’s fitting that someone who fell to such a fate and has been such an influence on me, should sit first and foremost on this list.

~ Tilt, Libel

Tilt is another punk band from the nineties that was fronted by a woman. Her stage name is Cinder Block. She’s still active with other bands. I believe she has one of the best voices of any punk lead vocalist, ever. I met her when I was nineteen. I was so star-struck that I could barely get a word out. All I could do was shake her hand and say, ‘thank you.’ Libel is about ignorant liars. It makes me think of the cult, based on Evangelical Christianity, that I created for Prophet’s Debt.

~ Boysetsfire, Unspoken Request

Boysetsfire is a punk band that’s been around for nearly thirty years. I first heard this song at one of their shows. It’s about the residual psychological trauma stemming from rape. Such a feminist sentiment from a band made up entirely of men isn’t unheard of in the punk scene, but this one really got me. It was in a small club and I could see backstage. There, just in my line of sight, was a woman who was friends with the band. While they played, she burst into tears. I’ll never forget that. It showed me what men can do if they get together against the toxic behavior of other men by standing up to them, verbally or physically if need be.

        ~ Doll Skin, Daughter

I only became aware of Doll Skin last fall when I saw them open for Anti-Flag and Bad Cop Bad Cop, both of whom you should check out. This song reminds me of my protagonist, Naomi, because of the lyrics,

“No matter what she keeps on breathing,

 why can’t I, why can’t I?”

Naomi is a survivor. Against all odds, she keeps on breathing. And so can you.

~ Bronski Beat, Small Town Boy

I choose this because it’s a song about a young person who is gay fleeing from home. This was released in 1984: way ahead of its time. Naomi Pace is a gay woman, which is why she is sent away because it was thought that she could be converted to straight. That’s bullshit, of course. The specific lyrics that inspired me are:

“But the answers you seek will never be found at home

The love that you need will never be found at home”

Naomi’s family rejected her, so she built her own, which is what a lot of young people who are disowned do. They’re better off for it, hatred doesn’t belong in families.

AUTHOR BIO:

Robert Creekmore is from a rural farming community in Eastern North Carolina.

He attended North Carolina State where he studied psychology. While at university, he was active at the student radio station. There, he fell in love with punk rock and its ethos.

Robert acquired several teaching licenses in special education. He was an autism specialist in Raleigh for eight years. He then taught for four years in a small mountain community in western North Carolina.

During his time in the mountains, he lived with his wife Juliana in a remote primitive cabin built in 1875. While there, he grew most of his own food, raised chickens, worked on a cattle farm, as well as participated in subsistence hunting and fishing.

Eventually, the couple moved back to the small farming community where Robert was raised.

Robert’s first novel Afiri, is a science fiction love letter to his childhood hero Carl Sagan. It was nominated for a Manly Wade Wellman award in 2016.

Robert’s second novel is the first in a trilogy of books. Annoyed with the stereotype of the southeastern United States as a monolith of ignorance and hatred, he wanted to bring forth characters from the region who are queer and autistic. They now hold up a disinfecting light to the hatred of the region’s past and to those who still yearn for a return to ways and ideas that should have long ago perished.

Jane Austen Lied to Me

by Jeanette Watts

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Romantic Comedy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Dear Diary,

In three years of college, there are seven times my life seemed to suddenly turn into a Jane Austen novel; seven times my life, instead of becoming a romance, turned into a made-for-TV drama.

What am I doing wrong?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
Feb 28
I’ve been thinking about my conversation with Professor Jacobson over and over.  The thing about formulas and people.  It makes a certain kind of sense, but does it lack a romantic sensibility?
Ha!  Sense and Sensibility!
This is the second time that Professor Jacobson has me thinking about S&S. Well, if I’m no Lizzie Bennett, there are worse things in life than being a Marianne Dashwood.  She had youth and beauty and high spirits.  She wasn’t good at the dating thing, either, and overlooked the better man at first.  Why was that?  Did Colonel Brandon seem unromantic at first impression?
Even though I’ve got an assignment due in Spanish, as well as the inevitable calc and chem homework, I grabbed Sense and Sensibility to take with me to read while I went to dinner. I wanted to read everything in the book about Colonel Brandon.
Anne spotted me in the dining hall while I was halfway through a tuna sandwich and a really big pile of potato chips.  “Hey, Roomie.” She slid her cafeteria tray onto the table across from me and plopped her book bag down beside it.  “You having a really bad day?”
“Um, no I don’t think so, why?” I asked.
“Usually, if you’re having a bad day, you pick up Jane Austen and read a little something before you start to study.  Since instead of sitting here doing your homework, you’re sitting here reading Jane Austen, I take it you had an exceptionally bad day today.”
