Mom and Dad’s Martinis

by Jacelyn Cane

GENRE: Memoir

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Jacelyn Cane's mom and dad liked their martinis dry: straight gin on the rocks with a dab of vermouth and a hint of water - and they liked them often. They also liked to party; they danced, socialized, and drank - they were good at all three. Sometimes this behaviour led to humorous situations - antics in the pool, at the club, the cottage or in the car, for example. Other times, however, the experiences were not so funny - family fights and times of neglect, trauma, and abuse. By weaving together a series of episodes that take the reader to light and dark places, author Jacelyn Cane tells a poignant cautionary tale for anyone affected by alcoholism and/or family struggles. The author is using a pseudonym and most of the names in the book have been changed to protect people's identities. "Mom and Dad's Martinis: A Memoir" is a great read for anyone who has experienced a childhood mixed with joy as well as sorrow. It is a story of love, acceptance, forgiveness, and hope.
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
Ivan and I got married at Mom and Dad’s house in the middle of winter. There were one hundred guests. Again, Mom cooked all the food except for the wedding cake and other desserts, and waiters and bartenders were brought in to help out. As flower girl, Ivan’s daughter, Isobel, had to walk down my parents’ huge staircase first, followed by Sandy, my matron of honour. I descended last, with Dad at my side. Ivan and I said our vows against the snowy backdrop of my parents’ family room window. Purple heather and tulips were draped over lit candelabra that stood before the snowy view of the ravine out back. Ivan and I had written our own vows. We said them in English, but he also did a couple of readings in Spanish for the many Spanish-speaking guests.
“He’s not going to speak in Spanish, is he?” my mother asked with exasperation. She kept sighing loudly as Ivan read. “Is he done yet?”
I could feel my cheeks turning red. I gave her a dirty look, but said nothing.
After the ceremony, everyone sat down all over the house to eat dinner. I had invited Isobel’s mother, Loretta, so she could see her daughter as flower girl. She was also a friend. Mom sat down beside her not knowing who she was. “I’m Dorothy Cane,” said Mom.
“I’m Loretta O’Laney - Isobel’s mother.”
“Oh, Isobel is such an easy-going child. It’s always a pleasure to have her with us,” said Mom. “Jacelyn, on the other hand, now, she was a difficult child.”
When I found out about that conversation weeks later, I called my mother to confront her about it.
“Well, you were a difficult child - that’s all there is to it,” Mom said.
I remembered all the times my mother ignored me when I needed to talk. “And you were a difficult mother.” With that, I hung up the phone. Again, it was weeks before we spoke.
  3. Thanks for hosting. I hope you check out this humorous and impactful book!
    "Mom and Dad’s Martini’s is a powerful and deeply honest memoir that opens the door for families to talk openly about the insidious impact that alcohol can have on every small and big moment in life. The book is chocked full of stories filled with shenanigans, music, nature and affluence and, of course, alcohol. Although trauma and pain are pervasive themes, deep love, commitment and the promise of healing are always present.
    A must read! Bravo Jacelyn Cane!" - Valerity, Goodreads Reviewer
