EXCERPT ONE:

“Break left,” I radioed Angel, jammed the throttle forward, and yanked the stick back and to the left in a climbing turn to circle around on the enemy position. I searched back over my shoulder for a road or trail leading out of the area to anticipate their possible direction of movement. There was a small scar coming down off the hill to the southeast.

As we came around three hundred and sixty degrees, lining up on the small section of the jungle where red and green tracer rounds floated up our way, the intensity of the fire began to wane as the rebels understood what was about to come their way.

“Take the trail. Southeast,” I radioed Angel.

He clicked his mike twice to acknowledge the one-two punch plan and throttled back to drift away in trail to follow up my initial attack on the enemy positions with rocket fire as they inevitably fled to melt back into the jungle.

I banked hard and began to dive down on the hilltop. The tracers began to concentrate on my nose. I lit up my guns, spreading the field of fire left and right with a little dance on the rudder pedals. I felt the Texan buck up a bit as rockets left the rails. I followed the plumes of their engines halfway to the target before I had to pull up, but noticed the intensity of the enemy fire had waned considerably.

“Way to go, Batman,” Angel radioed. “Let me just clean up this little mess you made.”

Behind me, Angel strafed the road and fired his rockets in so close that he seemed to clip the top of the fireball from the warhead explosions.

I circled back and took a path coming back up the road, stitching it with .303 caliber fire…

Uh. Oh. How could I help? I’d learned that thinking like a computer could help you decide what to do when you weren’t sure.

Algorithm one: What if Peter exploded? He would come after Matthew. Matthew would wrestle him. They would both get in trouble. Algorithm one == fail.

Algorithm two: What if Peter calmed down? What if Matthew calmed down? We could all rescue the plane. I would be a big help barking at the tree to give up the plane.

Snort. Laugh. Get serious, Merlin. Algorithm two would never happen.

Algorithm three: It had been Peter’s ball that started all this. It had been Matthew’s plane which went kablew. What if they both fell in the mud? All socks would be ruined.

AUTHOR BIOS:

D. G. Priya is the bestselling author Priya Ardis. She obtained her Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin, #6 in the world (Academic Ranking of World Universities, 2014) and #8 (US News, 2020) in Computer Science. Her advocacy of early education in computing and the challenges of childhood disabilities come from her experience as a parent and volunteer. Her love of dog stories comes from the antics of her own golden retriever.

Shelley Hampe is an author-illustrator. She is known for her work with Harvard University, illustrating a ground-breaking social-emotional learning program for children. She has a master's in studio art and has taken part in world-recognized artist residencies in the United States. When she isn't busy solving problems, Shelley can be found teaching STEAM principles to elementary aged kids. Shelley's dog Beau, helped solve her problem of cold-feet while illustrating this book.

“Maybe one day your wish will come true, Ella, my beloved, brilliant étoile,” said her father in French. “Brilliant means bright, and you pronounce it bree-yant. Étoile means star, and you pronounce it eh-twal. You are my bright star.”

“Your beloved, brilliant étoile,” she softly repeated.

MY BOOK REVIEW:

I absolutely LOVED this book!!!

This book is captivating, inspirational, uplifting, encouraging, and heart-warming!!!

This is a story about Lafitte De Muze, a foal who grows up to be still much smaller than the other horses. He was able to run fast and jump and he practiced all the time, but he still didn’t grow or get any bigger. At the age of four his owners decide to sell him, but no one chose to buy him. He continues to feel sad, disappointed, and discouraged, but his parents keep reminding him how special he is, to keep his head held high, and never stop believing.

This story also follows Ella, a young American girl who is sent to Belgium to live with her Great-Aunt Anastasia, as her parents struggle financially. It isn’t long before Ella feels sad and lonely in an unknown country thousands of miles away from her parents. Thankfully, Great-Aunt Anastasia quickly picks up on Ella’s withdrawn morale and she whisks her away to Bonnerville Stables for a horse sale. Ella falls instantly in love with Lafitte and her Great-Aunt purchases him for her. Ella changes her new best friend’s name to Little Feat, her magical horse – as feat means great courage, strength, and skill – it was truly fitting for this very special new friend.

There are so many invaluable life lessons, important morals, and positive messages throughout the story!!

This book should be on EVERY girl’s bookshelf!!

This book is a rewarding read filled with strong, enriching social behavior and developmental goals!!

I am a HUGE animal lover – especially horses (I used to ride and my cousins have stables) so I couldn’t wait to read this book and I am so thrilled that I did as it did not disappoint!!

The story line intrigued me, the writing style captivated me, and the storytelling kept me glued to the pages!!

I love the positivity, the never give up, and always believe in yourself mantras. These messages are extremely important to convey and teach to young children.

I can easily see children pulling the, “please… just one more page…” line on this book as it is hard to put down!!

I also loved the illustrations!! They are so beautiful, delicate, and detailed. I enjoyed following along watching the pictures all tell their story.

I think many kids will be asking for horses – or at least riding lessons after reading this book lol!!!

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it! I think all children’s readers and animal lovers will like this book too! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!

The main headline of The Daily Sun and the article that followed criticized the police and their lack of success in arresting the killer. The sniper read the article and smiled. He enjoyed learning that the authorities were no closer to identifying him.

He knew they would never catch him.

He was too smart for them.

Satisfied that all was well in the world, he carefully folded the paper so as not to crease the headline, and then set it aside. He would read it again later.
