EXCERPT ONE:

Nothing hurt quite like the sharp beak of a phoenix jabbed straight into my scalp.

I growled a curse as I leapt up into a sitting position on my bed. Was I bleeding? I ran a shaky hand through my disheveled black hair and flinched when I grazed the tiny puncture wound. Some blood, but not much.

“Good morning, Volke,” the phoenix said, his voice chipper.

I took a deep breath. “Hello, Forsythe.”

“My arcanist wanted to know if you were ready to train.”

“Yeah. Just give me a moment.”

The stinging pain removed all grogginess. I couldn’t go back to sleep now, even if I wanted to. After another deep breath, I peered through the open window. The sun had yet to rise. The purple hue of the sky, dotted with a handful of stars, meant we still had an hour before dawn.

“He’s already awake?” I asked.

“He’s been determined to work hard ever since he escaped Calisto’s pirate ship.” Forsythe tilted his head from side to side. “And you did say you would train with him whenever he asked.”

Although it was dark outside, Forsythe illuminated my room. A gentle glow radiated from beneath his scarlet feathers, like his body was made of flame. The rest of him resembled a large heron with delicate features, including a long neck and a pointed beak. His gold eyes stayed fixed on me as I flung my legs over the side of the bed.

I loved phoenixes, but every time they moved around, soot fell from the smolder of fire hidden beneath their feathers. A trail of it led from the windowsill to my bed.

Sleuth on Safari
by A. R. Kennedy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Cozy Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Naomi and her estranged sister are off on a trip of a lifetime—an African safari, a bucket list trip for Naomi on which she got a last-minute deal. Naomi thinks traveling with her sister will be the worst part of her African safari until she finds one of their fellow travelers, the unlikable Dr. Higgins, dead. She gets more adventure than she bargained for when she starts investigating what she thinks is murder but the luxury lodge says was a tragic accident. She only has a few vacation days, and a few game drives, to find the killer.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
For fifteen minutes, we stood at the conveyor belt, waiting for my luggage to arrive. The constant trail of luggage became a trickle and I began to worry. I had a vision that my vacation slideshow would be me in my Supernatural TV series T-shirt and jeans, with a soundtrack of my sister’s voice saying, “I told you so.”
I glanced at Charlotte. After a fifteen-hour flight, Charlotte had emerged refreshed. I was a little worse for wear. She gave me a dismissive look and I wiped a few crumbs from breakfast off my jeans.
She smiled briefly and the other expression returned.
“You know you look like Mom when you’re annoyed,” I told her.
She glared at me and whipped around. She and her bright pink luggage stormed off. Her pink flowy top wafted over leggings with a black-and-pink chevron pattern. I had to admit, she did look nice. And did not look like she had spent almost a day traveling. I looked down at myself. The same could not be said. My wrinkled black T-shirt and torn jeans, paired with Converse sneakers with tips that used to be white, made me cringe. Nothing about me said glamour.
I didn’t worry about being left in a foreign country by myself. I could find her a mile away with that highlighter pink gear.
I said a quick prayer before turning back to the luggage belt. I exhaled and smiled. She didn’t see the last bag to drop onto the conveyor. My worn tan duffle bag.
Ancestral Whispers
by Jo A. Hiestand
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Mystery (British)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Each year the residents of Nether Haddon celebrate the village’s founding in the time-honored way with games, music, and performances by their sword dancers. But something new is added to the fancy footwork this year: a team member dies ... murdered. Fear, jealousy and suspicion quickly engulf the group, emotions as tightly interlocked as the five swords used in the dance: a series of turns, jumps and clogging steps intricate as Celtic knots. Was the victim the intended target, or should it have been someone else? In the course of the CID investigation, a mysterious 17th century puzzle is discovered. Does it hold a clue to the murder? Detective Brenna Taylor and her colleagues have more than enough to worry about. But unbeknownst to her, career criminal King Roper has escaped from prison where he was serving time for murder. Now free and eager to settle the score for his capture, Roper tracks down Brenna’s whereabouts, ready for revenge...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

Mark pulled slightly on the body of his pale yellow shirt, peeling it away from his sweaty body. He held it like that, probably hoping some air would dry him off. “If anything had happened or might happen to Sam, Graham’d let you know. Scott would too. Now, don’t worry about nothing. My gran used to say that there was enough to occupy our emotions without seeing the Gean-canach everywhere.”

“Pardon?”

“The Irish faery. He personifies love and idleness.”

“Strange combination.”

“Must be something to it, if he’s the bloke to do it, Bren.”

“So, what’s wrong with seeing this faery?”

Mark smiled and patted my hand. “My dear, innocent girl. It is very unlucky to meet him.  We’re here, I think.”

Jack Darkgate’s house appeared liked a magician’s rabbit, popping out from behind a dense cluster of hemlock and fir as we rounded the bend in the road.  Two-storied, bulky and gabled, the house might’ve stood guard for the others on the road, or lodged any number of Mark’s faeries.

“What do you think?” We paused at the foot of his drive. It curved up the slope on which his house sat, with massive clusters of hostas, iris, and rhododendron nearly camouflaging its path. Mulched beds of enthusiastic roses hugged the house foundation, giving the appearance of Sleeping Beauty’s fortress.

“I think he needs to lay off the bone meal.” Mark shook his leg to dislodge an iris stem. “And us without our machete.”

“Think we can find the door?”

“We’ll requisition a sniffer dog.”

Trinity and Jeff
by Kate Hill

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Erotic Paranormal Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Denying her love for her childhood friend, Jeff, Trinity visits her family’s ancestral land, believing the Wild family magic has called her there to meet her soulmate. Instead she finds danger at every turn, but she won’t have to face it alone.

Jeff has loved Trinity his whole life, but settled for friendship after she broke his heart on prom night. Now this soldier turned firefighter faces the supernatural to protect Trinity and convince her once and for all that they belong together.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
She steered her car up the gravel driveway leading to the cabin. Her heart beat faster and her stomach lurched. As usual, she felt him -- the familiar warmth of her oldest friend -- as soon as she saw him.
“No,” she murmured. “I don’t believe this!”
She pulled her car next to Jeff, who stared at her from where he leaned against his motorcycle, his long, denim-clad legs spread wide and his muscular arms folded across his chest. His snug black T-shirt clung to his gorgeous, broad-shouldered torso. A slight summer breeze toyed with thick sable hair that hung almost to his shoulders. He’d just started growing a beard, so sexy dark stubble outlined his angular face.
Damn him. Why did he have to be so attractive? Would her destined mate look as good? Not that it mattered. Personality and integrity counted more than looks, but knowing that fueled her annoyance. Jeff was not only a fine physical specimen, but loyal, courageous, and in his own rough way, a genuinely sweet guy. Furious, she threw open the car door, stepped out, and slammed it behind her.
“What the hell are you doing here?” She glared at him, tapping her foot on the gravel. Her flip-flops probably made the motion more comical than intimidating, but she didn’t care. She was too angry.
“Trin, I’ll explain --”
“Damn right you will. You’ve always known about the family magic. You know why I’m here -- to meet my soulmate. Jeff, you cannot be here.”
GUEST POST:
Some of My Favorite Items in My Office
Welcome to my writing area. Enter at your own risk.
People who know me probably know about my love of Halloween, horror movies, and the macabre. They also know how much I love to read and write romance. My work area might be strange to some, but maybe not so weird to those with similar taste. My desk and bookshelves are black (my favorite color), and although there is a window in the room, my desk doesn’t face it because when I’m writing, I try to limit outside distractions. Pretty much all I need is a computer or notebook, music to fit the mood of the story, and quiet.
During breaks in writing, when I’m thinking about characters or working out a problem, I do a lot of pacing. Sometimes I’ll look out the window, but often I write late at night and the shades are drawn, so my workspace is filled with things that inspire me and have sentimental value.
The first and one of the oldest items is my lucky thesaurus. As you can see in the picture, it probably doesn’t look very lucky. The book is well-used, over twenty years old, and missing both the front and back covers (torn and taped beyond help, so I finally tossed them). I refuse to toss the book, however. Nowadays I use a digital thesaurus far more often, but this is my lucky one that I’ve had practically since I started writing for publication.
The next pictures are of two wall decorations. Both were gifts from my mother who has always supported my writing goals. The wolf on wood was from a small shop that we visited on a day out together. The second was a humorous Halloween decoration she gave to me this past year and which I have added to the group of Halloween decorations that I leave up all year round.
Speaking of year-round Halloween decorations, here is a picture of the area directly to the left of my computer. It includes several pieces in my skull collection, a gargoyle hourglass, and a special edition of one of my favorite books, The Scarlet Gospels by Clive Barker.
Spooky things are in my comfort zone, but when I’m writing I need to keep a sense of humor. This last picture is of four funny knickknacks I always have next to my computer. A windup eyeball, a bassett hound figurine (I had a Bassett mix and still miss her very much), a tiny stuffed beaver (a gift that was an inside joke), and a brain-shaped stress toy.
I warned you to enter my workspace at your own risk, but you made it this far, so thank you for sticking with me! Do you have any strange or funny items around your workspace? Please let me know in the comments.
