Happy New Year’s Eve!!

Happy New Year’s Eve lovelies!

I can’t believe today is the last day of 2017!  Where has this year gone?  I don’t know about you, but this year just flew right by!

So, what are your exciting plans for tonight?  Will you be out painting the town red?  Or ringing in the new year watching the ball drop on TV?  Or?

This year I am being a homebody as I am still getting over a cold.  So tonight, I will be curled up under a cozy blanket watching Christmas movies and then of course, watching the ball drop on TV.

Wishing you all a fun, exciting, and safe holiday!

And to all of those with pets - I wish you and your furbabies some extra TLC as tonight is definitely one of the tough ones for them.  This will be Bay's first New Year's and she's not scared of much, so I am really curious to see how tonight will go.  Unfortunately, this will be Dolce's fifth NYE's and she does not do loud noises well, so sadly I already know tonight will be quite rough for her.  Fingers crossed my neighbors went to their friends houses to set off the fireworks this year lol!!!

See you all in 2018!!!

Revision is a Process – How to Take the Frustration Out of Self-Editing
by Catherine E. McLean

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Self-Help, Self-Improvement, Non-Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A first draft holds the possibility of what will be a great story. Revision turns that rough diamond into a spectacular gem worth a reader's money and time.

Writers are individuals but to be a producing writer means creating a system to revise and polish a work so the reader thoroughly enjoys the story. REVISION IS A PROCESS is a guidebook for writers and authors that shows how a simple 12-step process can be tailored to eliminate the most common and chronic maladies of writing genre fiction. This valuable guidebook contains secrets, tips, practical advice, how-to's, and why-to's for taking the frustration out of self-editing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT THREE:
From Section 7, Show Don't Tell - What to Cut or Change
One rule of fiction is to show more and tell less.
What does that mean?
A very simple example is that saying it's a flower is telling but to say it's a white rose, its petals edged with a mist of ruby-pink is showing.
Showing means providing an instant, vivid image so the reader sees in their mind what was meant.
Yes, showing requires more words than telling, but how much detail is too much detail when showing?
Keep in mind that readers will stop reading and skim over sentences and paragraphs of details in order "to get to the good stuff" of drama, action, and something happening of interest. So it's best to choose all descriptive words carefully and keep the passages succinct.
Now— Go through your manuscript and highlight all descriptive phrases and passages so you can see how much of the total text is description.
If using your word processor's highlight feature, pause to zoom down to view entire pages and look at the end of pages to see how much carried over to the next page.
If you have exceeded three sentences (20-60 words) of description or explanation at any spot, that may be overkill. Determine what needs to be cut, pared down, rewritten, or reparagraphed for visual effect and immediacy, and what is too lengthy, mundane, or bordering on boring.
It's also important, when revising such areas, to remember that the replacement words should be in keeping with the story's or scene's narrator—and not you, the author, stepping onto the page with your voice, (that's a type of Author Intrusion that readers hate).
GUEST POST:
Do You Ever Wish You Were Someone Else? Who?
Who doesn't wish they were someone else? My life is ordinary and so it's not that I wish to be someone else, it's a matter of wanting to escape from same-old same-old of everyday earning a living, making ends meet, being a wife, mother, 4-H leader, Red Hatter, and all the other things that have to be dealt with in life.
But secretly, in my mind, I liven up the doldrums of existence by creating vicarious adventures—being someone extraordinarily special, even quirky. Discovering and reading novels was a godsend because I met pirates, cowboys, Horatio Hornblower, Robbie-the-Robots, Nancy Drew, fighter pilots, submarine captains, scientists, detectives, Superman, Wonder Woman, E.T.s, policemen and women, spies, and more. All an eclectic assortment of heros—and some antiheros and villains—but all kept me returning to the library for more books to fill any vacant hours with adventures, mysteries, and more.
Lack of finding good romance novels set in phantasy realms (medieval times, with or without a dash of magic or fantasy) and stardust worlds (futuristic, sci-fi fantasy, paranormal) is what drew me to inventing and imagining such worlds and the story people that populated them. In all of my stories, I get to be someone else, lots of someone elses—especially the protagonist. And sometimes, too, I cringe when I have to write about the villain who terrifies me. An example of such a villain is in my novel Karma & Mayhem, (http://karmaandmayhem.blogspot.com/) a paranormal fantasy romance that will be re-released in October 2017.
Actually, in that book, there was a triad of witches bent on immorality. Of the trio, Celinae and Sweets were evil-evil, and those two terrified me so I could not get into their heads and be them. But Annelisa was the odd-woman-out of the trio. She was perceived by her two cohorts as naive and expendable. But Annelisa was smart. She had not gone over to the dark side of dark. I could get into her head and witness or relay the perversions of the other two witches without having nightmares.
I also like fun characters, ones with quirky personalities, like Marlee in my novella Hearts Akilter, - http://tinyurl.com/HeartsAkilter-Amazonlink - a fantasy sci-fi romance. Marlee is a no-nonsense maintenance technician on a space station. She fixes robots. Trouble is, Henry, a meter-tall medical robot, comes to her complaining of a heart attack. Turns out there's a bomb inside the little guy. Marlee can't risk the bomber discovering she's found the device, so Marlee opts to kidnap an unflappable bomb expert to secretly disarm the bomb.
One of my wonderful kick-ass heroines is Darq, the Wysotti Indian fighter pilot protagonist of Jewels of the Sky, - http://tinyurl.com/jewelsofthesky-book - a sci-fi adventure (space opera). Being a direct descendant of the captain who massacred the Mayans, Darq is a duty-oriented, pragmatic interstellar fighter pilot. She doesn't believe in miracles or forgiveness, or that J'Hi-inti (god) would ever rescind the death curse on her people for what happened to the Mayans. Only J'Hi-inti hears one compelling plea for reconciliation and decides to let chaos rule—and test Darq. After all, she's a wild card like her nefarious ancestor. What will she do when she faces the ruthless alien fleet commander who spearheads the blitzkrieg that is to finally destroy her homeworld, and who she once witnessed murder her cadet comrades? She's blinded by hate and survivor guilt—and all that stands between survival and extinction, heaven or hell, for Darq and her people, is mercy, or a miracle.
By the way, two weeks after the launch of Jewels of the Sky, I found an Indian doll that looked just like what I imagined Darq to look like. I bought the doll, renamed it Darq, and gave Darq a blog - https://jewelsofthesky.wordpress.com/ - with the premise that Darq is visiting Earth as an ambassador and staying with me. I've had a lot of fun sewing her clothes for the many social events she gets invited to, taking the photos for her blog, and promoting the book through her blog adventures.
I also like medieval romance and a current work in progress is titled Thunder & Snow. The heroine is known as the Unworthy Princess. Only she's to become the legendary wielder of the Ironwood in this tale of heraldry and magic.
I doubt there's a limit on the number of heroines I get to be because of the stories and novels I read and the stories that pop up from my ever-active imagination.
Collateral Risk
by Gwenan Haines
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Romantic Suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
After losing her sister to a serial killer years earlier, scientist Mia Lindgren survives by focusing on the most dangerous viruses known to man. She’s become adept at shutting herself off from human contact—until her lab partner drowns under suspicious circumstances.
Forced to accept the assistance of Nick Doyle, an FBI counter-terrorism expert on leave, she soon realizes someone at the Institute for Research of Infectious Diseases is involved in a deadly deception. As she and Nick race to find a killer who will stop at nothing to accomplish his version of Armageddon, they can’t ignore their own chemistry. But can Mia truly put the past to rest?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

Mia finished reading the articles and took a chair opposite him. If it hadn’t been for the fact they were talking about the end of the world, it would have been cozy, sitting there with her. Small problem.

“If he wasn’t dead, I’d say it would be natural for him to have them. Working with this stuff is what we do. If he came across those articles, he’d keep them.” She hesitated, averting her gaze. “I would too.”

“Well, you’re right about one thing, Bride of Frankenstein,” he said. “The man’s dead. And I’m guessing this has something to do with it.”

“So you believe my theory—about him not really drowning.”

“I’m starting to. I called to get the results of the autopsy and hopefully should have them in a day or two if nobody decides to stall.”

“You think they’re going to stall?”

“I don’t know. We’ll see. I’m supposed to be on leave, so it’s possible the powers that be don’t want me getting involved in something I shouldn’t be.”

They got that right. Under the yellow overhead light, Mia’s hair fell down over her shoulders in pale waves. He’d never seen it down. He almost wished he hadn’t.

She gave him a hard look. “Maybe you shouldn’t. I mean, you’re supposed to be getting better, aren’t you? Healing. This can’t be helping.”

“It is helping,” he said quietly. “You’re helping.”

She looked away. For several seconds, she didn’t speak. “I don’t think so,” she said at last. “I’ve never helped anybody. Not even my own mother.”

“Mia—”

“Stop, okay?” She held up a hand. “Just stop.”

“Okay.” He wanted to reach out and take her hand in his. No, he wanted to take her upstairs and show her how much she’d helped him heal, one long kiss at a time. But if he told her that he’d lose her. Whatever had happened to her in the past had scared the hell out of her. If he pushed too hard, he’d lose her.

And he wasn’t going to get involved with her in the first place. Wasn’t that what he kept telling himself?

REVIEW:

Excellent read!  Fantastic characters!  Creative storyline with realistic details!

I love a good mystery, suspense book and this one totally fits the bill!

 Mia Lindgren, is a scientist who completely throws herself into her work full-time, because she lost her sister to a serial killer a few years earlier.  Mia thought she had put her past behind her, however, that is all about to change after Mia’s lab partner turns up dead under very suspicious circumstances. Mia realizes she is about to fall back into the suspense, mystery, and intrigue realm while she tries to determine if there is another killer on the loose.  As it starts to become more apparently so, Mia is forced to work with Nick Doyle, a sexy, but just as feisty, FBI counter-terrorism expert on leave.  Together they team up to stop a madman interested in creating his version of Armageddon.

Bioterrorism is still a hot topic these days and a scary, but true possibility.  Although, hopefully, the more we are aware and prepare, the more likely we can prevent and stop future attacks.

I hate reading books or watching shows that are just so farfetched or there’s no way that would ever happen and makes the whole book/show look so fake and phony – that is not the case here!

There are so many well thought out passages and very detailed scenes that it is obvious the author did an impressive job researching the material and representing the public health industry in a truthful and realistic manner.

As someone who has a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health and Urban Planning, and have worked on Center for Disease Control (CDC) projects and other government contracts, I am all too familiar with terrorism, bioterrorism, and weapons of mass destruction.  So, I was very intrigued to read this book and it did not disappoint.

Of course, this book is not overly technical, there is a lot to the mystery and suspense side and even a budding romance!

I really liked the main characters, Mia and Nick.  They were genuine, likable, and relatable.  They both had real problems, flaws, and baggage.  They worked well together, and their witty banter really played off each other.  The characters fit well together and just seemed to complement one another.  Not to mention their chemistry and passion that sizzled on and off the case.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this book as it has a lot to offer the reader!  Although, this book is listed as book three in the series, it can absolutely be read on its own.  I had not read the previous books in the series and had no problem following along or understanding this book.

GENRE: Cyber Thriller

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
There is a unit buried within the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. Unit 61398—the cyber warfare unit. Li Yong prepared his entire life for command of Unit 61398. Li Yong believed this was the ultimate honor and service to the State
Then America’s airliners started plunging from the sky. There is no honor in being the world’s worst mass murderer. How do you right the most terrible wrong? How do you prevent the State from slaughtering your entire family if you fail? How do you balance a moral imperative against a lifetime of homeland allegiance? How does Li Yong stop the unstoppable?
From Chris Malburg, author of God’s Banker, comes the Enforcement Division Series’ next riveting installment--Man of Honor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT THREE:

“You,” Jack said pointing to Li Yong, “get to work. You now have less than two hours to insert your disarming instructions before the next attacks launch.”

Li Yong did not move. “Where is my family?”

Helen stepped into the confrontation. “In The FBI’S custody. I’m establishing a com link with them right now.”

Crypto jumped in, “If the attacks launch, the Department of Justice will put your parents on trial for terrorism.”

“They’ll never see the light of day again,” Jack said. “But that’s just our criminal justice system. I don’t have the restriction of law. So let me be clear. If you don’t stop these attacks that you created I will put a bullet in your brain. Understood?”

Li Yong dropped his head. “You are no better than the Chairman. He also took my parents. He threatened to kill them if I do not engineer these attacks. We all are just hostages to you—”

“Okay, look,” Helen said and held a hand over the telephone handset she was talking into, “too much testosterone here. Both of you just stand down for a minute. Li Yong no one is going to shoot anyone. I have the FBI on the line. They’re patching in a video feed for you to see.” She pointed.

On the wall, one of the video screens went blank for a second, then reappeared. This time it showed the image of the General and Mother sitting at a table in a stark, windowless interview room. Across from them were two agents in dark slacks, white shirts, blue ties, their suit jackets were carefully draped over the backs of their chairs.

Lovesick Gods
by Amanda Meuwissen

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Gay Paranormal Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

The elements touch everyone on Earth—Fire, Water, even Light—but every so often someone becomes more attuned to their elemental leaning and develops true power. When an evil Elemental known as Thanatos arrived in Olympus City, it saw the rise of its first hero—Zeus. But the death toll caused by defeating Thanatos changed Zeus, who by day is young detective Danny Grant.

It’s been six months since Thanatos terrorized the city at the start of Lovesick Gods. Danny should be used to his duty behind the mask, but the recent past haunts him. His girlfriend left him, he snaps at the barest provocation, his life feels empty—he needs an outlet, any outlet to pull him out of his depression.

Enter notorious thief Malcolm Cho, the Ice Elemental Prometheus. There was a time when Danny welcomed a fight with Cho, filled with colorful banter and casual flirtations that were a relief compared to Thanatos. Even as a criminal, Cho had recognized the threat Thanatos posed and promised to help Danny stop him, but the day Danny needed Cho, he never showed. Cho was the reason so many people died that day—including Danny’s mother.

Danny decides to teach the man a lesson and fan the fire of their attraction into something more. At worst, he’ll get some no-strings-attached sex out of the deal and finally blow off steam; at best, he’ll get Cho to fall in love with him and then break his heart to spite him. Danny doesn’t expect to fall for Cho in the process, and he certainly can’t predict the much darker threat on the horizon.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
Mal and Dom would do this same surveillance next week, then the day right before the heist. It was a peaceful sort of monotony Mal shared with her only, never Lucy. Lucy would have gotten bored. Talked too much. Distracted him. With Dom, they might make a change of plans after watching for a while, especially if they saw anything out of the ordinary, but small talk was rare. They'd known each other too long to ever ask how the other was ‘doing’, at least not in blatant terms. That only came up if something seemed off.
Today, the tell came from Mal. He really should have noticed it himself before it became obvious—the tap of his finger on the side of his coffee cup, his other hand drawing patterns on the vent beneath him. He had the view so committed to memory he might have been able to walk right in through the front door of the museum from his current location blindfolded. So he let his mind wander. To Danny. To last night. To tomorrow night and what wonders it might bring…
“What’s got yer panties twisted?”
Mal pulled his stray hand up to join the other around his coffee cup. “Don’t know what you mean.”
Dom huffed. “That’s not yer nerves before a heist kinda twitchin’, Frosty. That’s yer sorry case ‘a blue balls face, up in yer head thinkin’ about some hot piece ‘a ass that got away.”
Damn Dom for knowing Mal so well. He could deny it, and they’d volley back and forth a while longer, but that would only aggravate them both and accomplish nothing; once Dom had her mind set on something, she wouldn’t let it drop. “Fine, you got me. Think I feel like doing kiss and tell about an almost, Dom? Had the start of a good time last night, got interrupted, and likely won’t see him 'til tomorrow.”
“So there’s a next time planned, huh? That’s new. Who with?”
It never failed to amaze Mal how much Dom and Lucy could have in common despite their varied personalities—like nosing into his love life. He weighed his options, but he didn’t see a point in hiding this development from his friend like he planned to avoid it with his sister.
“Zeus,” he said and took another sip from his coffee, wishing it was the same drink Danny had ordered him yesterday, which had tasted almost as delicious as the man himself.
“Bullshit,” Dom said, causing Mal to tilt his head at her.
“His idea.”
“Damn. You don’t think that’s gonna bite you in the ass?”
“If I’m lucky.”
Dom snorted. She sipped her own coffee as she turned back to the museum. “You have yer fun, pal, but once we pull this heist, he’s gonna be pissed.”
“More than likely. But it’ll be a fun ride along the way.”
