The Prophet and the Witch
by James W. George

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Puritans. Quakers. Pirates. Mohawks. Witches. And a brutal war…

If you thought New England was dull in the 1670s, get ready for a history lesson.

In the critically acclaimed “My Father’s Kingdom,” debut author James W. George transported his readers to 1671 New England, and the world of Reverend Israel Brewster. It was a world of faith, virtue, and love, but it was also a world of treachery, hatred, and murder.

Four years later, Brewster is a disgraced outcast, residing in Providence and working as a humble cooper. Despite his best efforts, war could not be averted, and now, “King Philip’s War” has begun.

The rebellion is led by Metacomet, known as “King Philip” to the English colonists. He is the tormented son of the great Massasoit, and leader of the Wampanoag nation. Once the most reliable of Plymouth Colony’s allies, they are now the bitterest of enemies. Meanwhile, Metacomet’s mysterious counselor, Linto, despises this war and will do anything to end the bloodshed.

Meticulously researched, “The Prophet and the Witch” is a tale of hope and brotherhood in the face of evil and violence. It features the remarkable cast of fictional and historical characters from book one, including Josiah Winslow, Linto, Increase Mather, Constance Wilder, and Jeremiah Barron. Additionally, new characters such as America’s first ranger, Captain Benjamin Church, bring this chapter of history to life like never before.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
“Vous ĂȘtes malheureux?”
Linto morosely drew another card, and ignored Captain Alain Fontaine.
“Qu'est-ce qui ne va pas?”
Linto should have been using the opportunity, as Captain Fontaine expected, to study the language of their new allies.  As the captain repeatedly conveyed, within a few years New England would merely be an extension of New France, and a working knowledge of French would be vital.
“Are you unhappy, Linto?”
The shift back to English stirred Linto from his dull torpor.  He briefly made eye contact, played his card, and sighed.  They were playing “one and thirty,” and this would certainly be the fourth consecutive hand Linto would lose.  His three cards currently added up to a paltry seventeen points, and he knew Fontaine would capitalize on his discard.
“I will take your three, and…voila.  I have thirty-one.  Or better yet, I have trente et un.”  Linto stared vacantly into space.
“Linto, speak to me.  You miss your family, no?  I miss my family as well.  My daughter is named Madeline.  She is with her grandmother in Lyons.  Tell me, what are the names of your children?”
Linto blinked and stared at the table.  “Will Father Jacques ever come back, Cahp-ee-tehn Alain?”
Fontaine remained cordial.  “I do not believe so.  I have told you before.  He will spend the spring to the west of here, on the shores of the ocean lake.  It is very far, but he will save many souls.  But I can answer all of your questions.  You wish to know more about the English heresies?  How they revile the Holy Father?”
Linto reached absent-mindedly for the cards, and lethargically shuffled them, much to Fontaine’s surprise. “A fifth hand, Linto?  Surely, your luck must be ready to change?”
Linto briefly ruminated on the concept of luck.  “Cahp-ee-tehn Alain, do you confess your sins?”
“Excusez-moi?”
“Father Jacques told me true Christians will tell a holy man all the things they have done wrong, and they will ask to be forgiven.  Do you think people are punished if they don’t tell a holy man all the things they have done wrong?”
“You think of such serious matters all the time, Linto.  The sky is clear, the English are on the run all over the land, and we are roasting ducks today.  There will be a big lacrosse game to watch in the afternoon.  I think we will also see at least thirty more warriors arrive this week, and they will bring muskets.”
Linto continued his ineffective shuffling.  “How often do you tell the holy man your sins?  What if you do bad things every day?”
Fontaine reached for the cards and took them.  “Linto, you have been moping like a sad Puritan ever since you went to see the Nipmuc.  Weren’t they overjoyed at the news?  Aren’t they making preparations for two hundred new warriors?”
The reminder of deception and falsehood triggered an even deeper gloom in Linto.  He sat silently, and was relieved when one of Cahp-ee-tehn Alain’s attendants came in with cheese and brandy. Linto hoped the subject would now quickly change.
GUEST POST:
Ten Reasons You Should Read My Book
1.    You won’t be disappointed.  Even if you don’t consider yourself a fan of historical fiction, I’m confident you will love this book.  I’m very proud of the reviews it has garnered.  Don Sloan of Midwest Book Review awarded it five stars and said it was “a remarkable book that should be required reading for anyone who believes that history is just a dry procession of facts, dates and faraway places.”  Thomas Anderson, of The Literary Titan, awarded it a gold medal for October and said it was “Expertly written and instantly engaging from the first few pages...An exceptionally drawn historical fiction account.  I was captivated...one of the more intellectual of reads."
2.     Perfect for the Holiday Season.  Here’s an opportunity to spend Thanksgiving and the holiday season with the grandchildren.  The Pilgrims’ grandchildren.
3.     The opportunity to learn about one of the most astounding, yet obscure events in American history.   When it comes to American history, chances are we know the tale of the Pilgrims, the Mayflower, and 1620.  We probably also know the events of the American Revolution in the 1770s.  But did anything interesting happen in the intervening 150 years?  Anything at all, besides the Salem Witch Trials?  YES!  King Philip’s War was a war between the New England Puritans and the Native Americans in the 1670s.  It was one of the most catastrophic events in American history, and it needs to be a topic of greater study and reflection.
4.     The opportunity to hate the villain.  Jeremiah Barron, the screech owl… Grrrrr…..I hate him so much!
5.     Seventeenth century drinking songs!  Huzzah!
6.     The opportunity to immerse yourself in deep, probing ruminations on the nature of faith, religion, love, war, and friendship.
7.     Unsettling depictions of nightmares and insanity.
8.     The inspirational love and romance of Israel Brewster and Constance Wilder.
9.     Three maps, a comprehensive character guide, and a detailed summary of book one – yours at no extra charge!
10.    A scheming, Scottish dandy.  A beautiful, scarlet-haired, Quaker pacifist.  A hulking, heroic son of a carpenter.  A disgraced minister wrestling with insanity.  An obnoxious, drunken pirate.  A captivating young Native American on a spiritual quest.  Seafood feasts.  An erotic wedding night.  Witchcraft.  Frenchmen.  Lacrosse.  A slow, obstinate, flatulent horse.  Mohawks.  Betrayal.  Sorrow, joy, and hope.  All in one modestly-priced book!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

For at least three decades, Mrs. Nevando's Christmas wish was to have a carriage ride through the city on Christmas Eve.  She never mentioned this wish to her husband:  the idea seemed all too frivolous.  Twelve years ago, when she sat beside  his hospital bed, Mrs. Nevando dozed periodically and dreamed of a Christmas carriage ride.  Each of the past twelve Christmases that she endured with the memories of her deceased, beloved husband, the 74-year-old woman still entertained the thought of  a carriage ride, but then routinely dismissed the notion.  "An old woman riding in a carriage alone on Christmas Eve!  What would people think?" she often found herself wondering aloud--well, in an audible whisper.

In mid-December, Mrs. Nevando was in her usual mode of declining all holiday invitations although she was not receiving as many as she had in earlier years.  One son was somewhere in Europe, and the other son was on the East Coast.  Of course, they knew their mother was a Midwestern girl--old girl--who did not care to join the masses at airports during any holiday season.  After she wrote e-mails to both sons and a few other family members, Mrs. Nevando found herself exploring the website for the city carriage rides.  Although she read that carriage rides were available on Christmas Eve, the cost was too expensive for her taste.  Nevertheless, she reasoned that one carriage ride was certainly way less money than an airline ticket to Italy or even to Boston.

AUTHOR BIO:

Although Alice Jane-Marie Massa has lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for over 25 years, growing up in the rural Indiana town of Blanford (with a population of approximately 400) influenced the subject matter and style of her writing. After earning master's degrees from Indiana State University and Western Michigan University, Alice, still a Hoosier at heart, taught for 25 years, including 14 years of teaching writing and public speaking at Milwaukee Area Technical College. Having retired from teaching English and grading stacks of student papers, she now focuses on her own writing.

Alice invites you to visit her blog (http://alice13wordwalk.wordpress.com) where, since January of 2013, she has posted weekly her poetry, essays, memoirs, or short stories. Her writings on Wordwalk frequently focus on her Indiana hometown of Blanford, her four guide dogs, her Italian ancestors, and writing. Additionally, some of her writing pieces have been published in Indiana Voice Journal, Magnets and Ladders, Dialogue, Newsreel, and The ACB Braille Forum, as well as in the anthology Behind Our Eyes: A Second Look.

Away from her desk, Alice enjoys reading, container gardening, and the television program Jeopardy. Since March 21, 1990, Alice's guide dogs have added sparkle, spirit, and independence to her life. Currently, most of all, she is grateful for her long walks with her fourth Leader Dog, Willow (a black Labrador), who is following very well in the amazing pawprints of Alice's beloved first three Leader Dogs—Keller (a Golden Retriever), Heather (a Yellow Labrador), and Zoe (a Black Lab/Golden Retriever mix).

Evolved
by Archer Miller

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Science Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Humanity has spread to the far reaches of space with The Golden Door, a planetary colonization monopoly, selling off every desirable and not so desirable planet to desperate settlers.

Each new world comes with new challenges, and to meet that challenge the children are evolving.

When Pieter, and other gifted children like him, become the target of government research they must fight not only for their lives but the future of their kind.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT THREE:
Mary’s telepathic shout jolted him out of a sound sleep. As his eyes opened flashes of blue light filled his room. He turned his head to check the common area between the cells. Arcs of lightening sizzled through the room. Kakogo cherta, he thought, watching the dancing discharge.
It’s Mike. He’s having a nightmare. Mary sounded frantic inside his mind.
Can’t you switch him off?
He can’t hear me.
Pieter stood and approached the barrier between his cell and the common room. The crackling discharge reminded him of a small Tesla coil his teacher brought to class. The lightning followed any hand or finger that touched the glass sphere. But this was on a scale he had never seen.
His eyes focused on the room across from his and caught sight of Joan watching the lights. They were all watching, too terrified to do anything to stop it.
Pieter pressed his hand to the clear wall and immediately the blue, static lights flowed to the spot. He felt no pain. The electrical discharge stopped at the other side of the wall, just like the Tesla coil in school. The pops and crackles from the common room made him wary. As he listened he could hear the electric lock mechanism on his door cycle on and off every few seconds.
Has he ever done this before? He asked.
Not like this, Mary replied. Not this bad.
Pieter listened for his door to open and pushed his hand against the clear panel.
GUEST POST:
Who Inspired Your Love for Books?
That is a great question. The simple answer is my mother. She was a devout reader and she had a love for science fiction. As soon as I could put complex sentences together she started bringing me books beginning with Edgar Rice burrows Martian series. Needless to say I was hooked.
When I was nine I got sick enough to stay home for a few weeks. That was when my mother brought me a book called Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. Along with it she brought me a dictionary and told me, “whatever you don't understand, look it up.” That propelled my reading skills through the roof. I began to expand my vocabulary as well.
When I was in High School I discovered The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I was totally captivated. When I when to college I joined a Tolkein  society. I even learned to read and write in Dwarvish runes. While I was college I got involved in Radio and Theater, That was when I began to write scripts for live radio theater.
After college I continued my radio career with a great creative outlet writing for several morning shows. But soon I began to want more and I began flirting with the idea of writing books. As usual I went through several false starts and aborted attempts.
That was when I began to chat with other writers in the internet and discovered I wasn't alone in my funk, and I realized I wasn't alone. It was during a discussion with one of these friends that I began to work out the kernel of a new story that would become my first finished novel. No, that book was not Evolved.
That took finding an editor I trusted and could work with. I didn't want someone who would pat me on the head and tell me what a good boy I was. I was looking for someone who could be brutally honest and willing to push me. That's the kind of editor it takes to make you a better writer.
That person was Cherrie Newman at Epitome Press. Epitome is unlike most of the other publishers out there in that the people in charge are also writers. That made all the difference. Now I think I can look forward to a long career as a writer.
Creating a unique, immersive setting one place at a time.
CREATING PLACES (THE ART OF WORLD BUILDING, #2) is a detailed how-to guide on inventing the heart of every imaginary world - places. It includes chapters on inventing planets, moons, continents, mountains, forests, deserts, bodies of water, sovereign powers, settlements, and interesting locales. You’ll also learn how and when to create history and maps. Experts and beginners alike will benefit from the free templates that make building worlds easier, quicker, and more fun.
Learn the difference between types of monarchies, democracies, dictatorships and more for realistic variety and believable conflict. Consistently calculate how long it takes to travel by horse, wagon, sailing vessels, or even dragon over different terrain types and conditions.
CREATING PLACES is the second volume in THE ART OF WORLD BUILDING, the only multi-volume series of its kind. Three times the length, depth, and breadth of other guides, the series can help fantasy and science fiction creators determine how much to build and why, how to use world building in your work, and whether the effort to create places will reap rewards for you and your audience.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT THREE:

All flying animals that are depicted as being ridable are imaginary. The likelihood is that none of them would get off the ground with a rider, but there’s no fun in that. We must take being realistic with a bigger grain of salt than normal. This can suggest doing whatever we want, and we certainly can, but there are often useful details and considerations that arise from trying to being realistic anyway. And these serve to make our work more believable.

While flying can generally be assumed to be done in a straight line, factors change this. Mountains can be tall enough that they must be circumnavigated. Real birds struggle to get over the Himalayas, for example, because the air is thinner. Larger creatures like a dragon would suffer even more from this. Dragons are often depicted as all powerful, but this is one way to make them less formidable and realistic at once. The difficulty of climbing over tall mountains is one reason, along with rain shadows, for characterizing any land features we’ve created; in this case, we’ll decide which mountains ranges are this tall (hint from chapter 4: the tallest peaks are in the interior of a continent, not on its coast).

Hostile territories can also change flight patterns, whether that hostility is other animals or sentient beings like humans. Even dragons are preyed upon by other dragons. A lone dragon might fear to fly through an area full of other dragons, especially if the latter are territorial or of another kind hostile to its own kind. If the dragon is unafraid, his rider might be more cautious.
