Out of Hiding

GENRE: Mystery/Thriller/Suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Charles Dampor was supposed to be a blessing, but instead turned out to be a curse. A family torn by deception and greed now saw Emily for what she was, and a co-worker with a vicious past of his own now has his own personal vendetta against her. If Emily doesn't open her eyes and see the doors she's unlocked, she'll find herself at the bottom of Lake Bermin...with Charles's ex-wife.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT THREE:

Alone with her drink in her hand, she takes a deep breath and allows the surrounding calmness to settle her. She scales the room and notices once again that no one is looking. This was the sight that concerned her at first, but now does the opposite. It’s nice to blend in. To not be looked at or gawked at. To be left alone to do your own thing. She puts her drink to her lips and takes a sip, not a gulp.

The relaxed feeling quickly fades when she sees through a crowd of people—another of those elitist circles of gossip—an old man sitting by himself at the kitchen table, staring across the room at her.

Herb.

He smiles and she can hardly recognize him. That pissed-off old man has always been so angry when he looked at her. Aside from the one time he walked inside the factory next to Charles, Emily cannot remember a time when she’s seen him smile. Frowns have been glued to his face since she’s met him; angry frowns. Frowns of pure disgust and hatred for Emily and she’s never known why. But today, he smiles. A big, calm, closed-mouth smile.

Fear doesn’t rise in her until he gets up from his chair and moves toward her in a beeline of determination, that grin still mounted on his face.

GUEST POST:

Who Inspired Your Love for Books?

Don’t hate me, but I was never really a reader.

You hate me already, don’t you? Want to throw things at me? Shun me to the basement? Don’t worry. I read now, and I’m trying to make up for lost time.

As a kid, I read R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps religiously. I’d read every one and then go back and start from the beginning again. You could create your own endings so why not?

But as I got older, I got wrapped up in the whole sports thing. I lost my nerdiness and my status as a bookworm. I played baseball and hockey and football, and my days were filled with school and nights filled with homework and practices. Life went like that all the way through high school.

When I was in college, my sports dwindled but time was overtaken by…well, partying—I never claimed to be a mature adult. Reading anything seemed like a hassle. But then something happened. My late, great friend Greg suggested we write a story about our lives—the lives that we found so interesting, but to an outsider surely seemed asinine.

From the first word written, I was hooked. There was only one problem: I hadn’t read a novel in ten years; I had some catching up to do.

My Goodreads book count is now higher than my average daily bank account, which isn’t saying much at all. But I do read a lot now, and I’d choose a good hardcover in one hand and a glass of scotch in the other over TV any night.
