GENRE: Historical Fantasy

BLURB:

Available for the first time as an e-book bundle, the award-winning historical fantasy series The Chronicles of Alcinia weaves a tale of war, history, passion and romance.   In Book I, The King’s Daughter, Tarabenthia of Alcinia should grow to inherit her father’s throne by the rocky cliffs of the sea.  When invaders seize her land, what will she sacrifice in the name of love?  In Book II, Heart of the Earth, the Northern Prince who has always wanted Tia saves her life.  But will the price of his protection be too high?  And finally in Book III, Ice Maiden, readers who wondered about the fate of Tia’s oldest son have their answer.  Sometimes heart-wrenching, always powerful, this is a tale of heroes and the women who loved them.

EXCERPT TWO:

There is a place between death and life where the souls of our loved ones dwell, trapped or perhaps assigned.  I know, for I have seen it.

There was much left unsaid between us and perhaps that is why I first saw the shade of my father.  What can be said between a King who barters his daughter and a daughter who seeks to overthrow her father?  It was the same with us in that place as it had been in life and the ghost of my father did not speak.

Mother was there, too, a pale remnant of the Queen whose poor tortured heart failed her on the night Tumagis defeated the men of Alcinia at Landsfel.

The one person I did not see was Sergius.  Of course, my husband had not worshipped the Goddess of Alcinia but his own Omani gods, yet I do not think that was the reason.  In my heart, I believe he had gone to Arianya.  I was the wife of his middle years and the one who gave him children.  She was the wife of his youth…his first love.  Even at his graveside, I had whispered to her spirit to care for him, and I think that she came to Sergius Magistri.

GUEST POST:

Who Inspired My Love for Books

One of my earliest memories is of my mother reading me, “The Skeleton in Armor.”  A ghostly tale of a knight in armor searching through his former castle for the lady love he lost through his suicide, it wasn’t exactly Dick and Jane.  I remember the Wreck of the Hesperus, too—tragic shipwreck—and the Assyrians coming down to their enemies like “wolves to the fold” in whatever battle they were fighting in that ancient time.  There was no Bambi for me.  Mom went straight to the heart of the matter, enthralling with tales by the literary masters.  It was her own passion, transmitted to me.

On the other side of the family, I had my Irish grandmother—Nana.  Along with an endless supply of cookies and a magical canary named Petey who somehow reappeared every time he died—courtesy of Woolworth’s, where you could buy canaries and budgies—Nana had books.  Lots and lots of books.  She had read them all so many times she never needed to open one, but told me the myths and legends of her native land by memory.  It was magical.  Thanks to Nana, I knew about Dick Whittington, the poor boy made “thrice Lord Mayor of London” as a result of renting out his cats during a rat infestation.  I am thinking that one is based in fact—remember the Bubonic Plague?  Such things gave me an abiding interest in writing historical fiction based on actual events.

So I don’t think it was any surprise to anyone when I started writing “books” as soon as I could print.  At first I published poetry…and later, too, when marriage and five children didn’t leave time for cranking out a 100,000 word novel.  But I always knew I would write one.  I did, beginning within days of my husband’s untimely death when I was only 41.  Against all advice, I took the lump sum life insurance settlement and got on a plane to Ireland, where I didn’t know a soul.  In between sitting in a sheep pasture and writing at a pub in Killarney where patrons kindly bought me ale, I wrote my first book, The King’s Daughter.  That book became the foundation novel for my trilogy, The Chronicles of Alcinia.  It literally changed my life.

I have not stopped writing since.  My Muse may leave me for long periods during which I suspect she is still over in Ireland, but eventually she catches up or I go over and catch up with her, and she gifts me with a new book.  I am ever so grateful, even if I did name her Persephone after the Queen of Hell.  She is a harsh taskmistress.  But I love her.
