The General's Wife
by Sara R. Turnquist

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

“Go home!” Ismene is speechless as she reads those words written in blood on the walls of her new home. The young, raven-haired Grecian beauty had traveled all the way from her homeland to marry the Pharaoh’s top general. But she never expected this. The hatred of the Alexandrian mob for their Greek rulers is right in front of her. It is the first of many threats she will receive.

Things are escalating out of control. Damaged crops and horses turned loose at night are one thing. But when Ismene receives a death threat, it becomes clear that there is a spy within her own household. She would turn to her husband to deal with this issue, except he left for battle by order of the Pharaoh. Not knowing whom to trust, she fears for her safety as well as the entire ruling class of Egypt.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT THREE:
“Can you please take this blindfold off?” Ismene loved surprises, but couldn't stand the waiting. Alistair had risen early to prepare a special breakfast for them and served her in bed. Then he had told her that he had something special planned for them today—a special place for them to visit.
“Not yet,” Alistair said as he gripped her waist. Their chariot went over a bump which caused him to pull her to him even more tightly. She smiled at the feel of his secure embrace; even after this short time it still caused butterflies in her stomach.
She felt the chariot continue to move down the smooth path with a little rocking here and there as the wheels found imperfections in the road.
“We're almost there, I promise,” he assured her. His voice was close to her ear and it gave her warm chills. She thought of the feel of those lips on her neck. There wasn't much time to daydream, though, because, true to his word, it wasn't much longer before she felt him slow the horses and still the chariot.
“Ready for your surprise?” he asked.
“Yes!” She feigned exasperation.
Only then did he reach up, untie her blindfold, and let it fall. “The great Library of Alexandria.”
REVIEWS: TO READ OR NOT TO READ
I am an author. My books have. And, while many people have enjoyed my work, there are those that do not. And they will let the whole world know about it through their reviews. I have read some of these reviews. And cried. And cried. And cried.
Putting out a book into the world is like putting out a piece of ourselves. We become quite vulnerable to everyone's opinion. And, for some reason, we believe that everyone is going to love our work. We may say we don't, but, in our hearts, we seem to think they will.
I received the advice long ago to NOT read reviews. Period. Did I take that advice? No. Because I thought I could handle it. Could I? Nope. So, my support group was left picking up the pieces of my broken confidence. Now, I know (a little) better. And I am the one advising authors NOT to read reviews. Why?
It is one person’s opinion. There is not a whole lot to gain from one person's opinion. Especially someone from a random walk of life who is not a writer and doesn't understand the context of your work. If you must read reviews, read through this lens: it is their opinion. What can I gain? Can something they are saying make me a better writer? If so, you can walk away more informed. If not, it is not worth dwelling on.
Believe it or not, there are those out there who thrive on writing bad reviews. I know, I attracted one. Honest. This reviewer's profile stated that he/she enjoys dishing out harsh reviews on authors that deserve them. Maybe I did deserve some of the things he/she had to say. It was my first novel. I have learned SO MUCH since then. But the tone of the review was definitely meant to tear me down, not simply review the book. So, be aware of this. It's just best not to go there.
Having “haters” must mean you hit a chord. What on earth could you have possibly done to upset someone so much to leave not just a negative review, but a nasty review in some cases? This must be something beyond you. Maybe something in your book did strike a chord that made them uncomfortable. This is what I'm left thinking.
Having negative reviews is a part of it. All authors have negative reviews. Look up "Pride and Prejudice". Yep...negative reviews. Can you believe it? Poor Jane Austen is, as they say, "turning over in her grave" I suspect. Not a chance. People come in all shapes and sizes and walks of life and experiences. So, there are going to be those that just don't care for your work. Just as much as there will be those that love your work. It's not you, it's because we, here on earth, are blessed with wondrous diversity.
I truly hope I have given you some reasons to ignore negative reviews, or at least, take them in stride. Better yet, let's not even read them. But that means we're not reading any reviews. Well, that's okay. As much as we like the warm fuzzies that come from positive reviews, they, too, can have an impact on our writing. And I choose to write from the places of my inspiration rather than write to my critics (positive or negative). But that's me. And that is how I handle my art.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

Now weightless, her body floated out of her makeshift bed into a dark shapeless place. Fog seemed to swirl around her as she drifted in a strange void. A chair would really be nice, she thought.

Then, when she looked to her left, she saw a purple and green chair surrounded by light from an unknown source. The next moment, she was sitting in this chair. Lauren looked around, trying to see where she was, but beyond the mysterious light circle, there was nothing but blackness and fog. As time passed in this place, she heard beeps and voices talking somewhere around her, but couldn’t see the source of either. Now she was afraid.

Should I speak and let them know I’m here? she questioned to herself.

Just as she was about to take her chances with “them,” another voice spoke.

“No, do not let them know you are here.” The voice spoke in a low whisper but was crystal clear.

The speaker sounded as if she was nearby. Lauren didn’t know why, but the voice seemed familiar and felt like she was someone Lauren could trust, so she kept quiet.

“We will both be in trouble if they find you here. It is time for you to go,” the whispering unseen speaker continued.

“What do you—?”

The sensation of being blown away by a strong wind cut Lauren off mid-sentence. She opened her eyes and found herself staring at her ceiling. Lauren sat up, repositioning herself on the sofa, and looked around the room. She remembered she had come to the den when she saw the bright white numbers on the satellite box’s digital display. A smile spread across her face as she read the time, 3:18 AM. She lay back on the sofa’s cushion, still smiling.

GUEST POST:

Building a Believable World and Other Rules in Writing Science Fiction

One of the reasons that I love reading, and writing, science fiction is because the only limit to the extraordinary elements of the world is the imagination of the creator. And by this, I don’t just mean the creator’s ability to imagine wild things. But also the creator’s ability to stick to the rules of the world, no matter how it may impact future parts of the story. And, further, if it is decided that a rule has to be broken, then there must be a justification or reason that makes sense according to the logic of that world.

Now someone reading the first paragraph may be staring at the screen wonder what this crazy lady is talking about. So, to better explain myself, I’ll give examples. The first example is a science fiction story that blew my mind the first time I saw the movie. The movie I’m talking about is The Matrix. The weekend that The Matrix opened I went to see it three times. No joke, I went twice on Friday with two different sets of friends and then I went with my boyfriend at the time on Saturday.

WARNING: Sorry to anyone who hasn’t seen The Matrix, but SPOILERS AHEAD.

This story, about how the world that we know is only an illusion being fed to us by computers to keep us docile as they use us as batteries, amazed me. And it’s a good example of how once the writers decided on this premise, every extraordinary thing that followed stayed true to that premise.

People can develop instant abilities and skills they never practiced. And why not? The fact that the world was only a computer simulation meant that uploading the information into a person’s brain was all they would need to use it in the simulation. Phones were used to transfer a person’s consciousness from the matrix’s world into the real world. Of course. A person’s consciousness is basically information, so why can’t it be sent over a phone line like a fax? The enemy can appear anywhere, at any time once the computer realizes your consciousness is back in the matrix. Makes total sense. The enemy is a series of computer programs that can infect the consciousness of people connected to the computer and in the matrix. So they can move around with ease. I could go on, but these few examples show that as a writer, there’s no end to what you can have happen in your science fiction world. You simply have to make sure it has a justification that fits with your world’s rules.

And there were even some comedic moments that also fit with the premise. Déjà vu is described as a glitch in the system. And, the fact that we say so many things taste like chicken is because the system doesn’t have the correct flavor profile on record. Again, these things fit with the idea that the world is just a computer simulation.

Whereas I believe The Matrix is an example of great world building, trying to find an example of bad world building is a bit more difficult. Not because they don’t exist, but because I tend to forget about these books, shows, or movies. But generally speaking, bad examples of world building are when the creator makes something happen that doesn’t make sense in context with the world.

A small example of this is a show I tried to watch on NBC. I can’t remember the name of it, but the premise was that there was this young girl, with some sort of ability, and both the good guys and the bad guys, wanted her. (I realize paranormal ability is technically fantasy, but this is the first example that came to mind.) Well, the good guys got to the little girl, who is in a hospital, just before the bad guys, an assassin, find her. So the good guy is trying to escape out this hospital with the young girl while being chased by a trained killer. The good guy is about to be cornered and killed. Well, he takes the young girl and hides in a patient’s room. The assassin is not far behind. She goes down the same hallway and is looking into every room. And, of course, she sees a curtain moving in the room they happen to be hiding in and goes in to search for them.

The assassin looks under the beds, or whatever, and doesn’t see them. The only other place to hide in this hospital room is in two closets. The assassin opens one of the closets and doesn’t see the man or the child. Then she LEAVES THE ROOM. The trained assassin. The best person the bad guys could find to capture their big prize only looks into ONE of the TWO closets. And then leaves. I did not watch another minute of that show because this just made no sense. Further, if this was the kind of lazy writing they had in the first episode, when they could set the basis for any type of rule or world they wanted, I could only imagine how much worse it would get when in episode 7 they had to stay true to something that was decided in episode 2.

I understand that they needed the good guy and the child to escape for the story to move forward. But you can’t have a character do something stupid, for no reason, and expect the story to be plausible. Because if the bad guys are so bad at what they do, then, of course, the good guys will win. And if I’m assured the good guys will win, because the bad guys are stupid, why do I need to watch any more episodes?

Having the ability to create any type world possible is why I love writing, and reading, science fiction. And generally speaking, the only rule I think creators need to keep in mind is once you make a world, stay true to the rules of that world. And if you have to break one of the rules, only do so if you can give a justification that also fits with your world.

Meadows Shore Series
by Eva Charles

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Prepare to fall in love with the Claytons and Harringtons and their rich Portuguese heritage. A Wedding at Meadows Shore is the first book in the series. In it, you’ll meet the family and visit their beloved Meadows Shore nestled along the moody Atlantic in the charming seaside town of Fair Harbor.

It all begins with Sophie’s story, where she discards the past and learns to trust herself and others. The series follows the lives of her sisters and cousins while they, too, sort through their baggage and fall in love. Travel with them on their romantic journeys, stopping in rural Minnesota, New Orleans, and other enchanted places along the way.

They are wealthy and powerful, but suffer pain and loss much like the rest of us. Even great privilege can't shield them from those experiences. But despite their wealth and power, I think you'll find them approachable and down-to-earth—or as Cole Harrington would say: “We put our pants on one leg at a time, same as everybody else.”

There's an old Portuguese adage, "the rooster crows loudly, but it’s the hen who’s in charge.” And so it is with the Claytons and Harringtons: strong women, alpha males, and of course, Avó Angelina, the family matriarch who keeps them all on their best behavior.

Bem vindo à família, Welcome to the family!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
A Wedding at Meadows Shore:
His voice took on a husky, seductive quality. “The women I date aren’t interested in my body, Sophie. What interests them is how I pleasure their bodies.”
She stared deep into his icy blue eyes and snickered.
Max never missed even the smallest of details. They were often the difference between success and getting your hat handed to you. Tonight, he noticed Sophie’s eyes betray her, even as she mocked him. Her pupils were dilated, the rich, whiskey-colored irises nearly overtaken by black. I have her attention.
Embolden by her body’s reaction, he took a step closer. He was so close that if she’d been breathing, her breath would’ve warmed his skin. “I can bring much more to your bed than my father does. So…much…more…” He drew out the words, emphasizing each in a voice that oozed sex. “And though I’m not an easy man to impress, I’m sure you’d have no trouble persuading me to finance your agency. None at all,” he drawled.
Neither of them spoke for a long moment, maybe two. The air was charged. The silence dangled between them like a ripe peach, fragrant and swollen, tempting the weakest among them to reach for it first.
“What do you think?” he asked softly, ending the silence.
While waiting for her response, a calculated kind of wait, he resisted the urge to lift his hand and run his fingers through the strands of hair that’d come loose, softly framing her face.
“I think you really are an ass.”
With that, she turned and walked away. Leaving him to gape at her magnificent back.
GUEST POST:
Romancing the Writer: How to Make Readers Fall in Love With Your Characters
A thin plot, too many flowery adjectives, even a misplaced comma or two, readers are often willing to look past flaws in a novel if they fall in love with the characters. But how does an author create loveable, believable characters?
I write contemporary romance with a hero and a heroine, and while there is always a central love story, family, friends, and co-workers play an important role in all my books, too. There are some who would prefer me to spend more of my words on the main characters and their budding relationship, and fewer on the supporting cast. And maybe I should, but I can’t seem to.
Just as in real life, supporting characters help create multi-dimensional heroes and heroines, adding layers of yummy filling and nuance to their stories. They also allow us a glimpse of how a main character behaves out in the world, which is often a bit different than how they behave in private with their newfound love. This broad perspective, I believe, brings characters to life and sows the seeds for an intimate relationship with readers.
Think of how uninspired your own life story would be if you were perfect, and spent all your time hidden away with only your equally perfect significant-other for company. Yes, it’s Aunt Martha, reminding you yet again, that you need to stop being so picky about the men you date, and your sister who never gets off her butt when there’s work to do, that make your life richer. Try to keep this tidbit in mind if you spend the holidays with family, it’ll save you from refilling your wine glass too often.
In the novel I’m currently writing, the hero, Gabe, not only has family and friends to help us get to know him better, but he also has a dog. Gabe does a very, very bad thing in the story—so bad, that he might be the top contender this year for the Men Behaving Badly annual award. About a third of the way through the novel, I suspect readers will suddenly hate him (no, he doesn’t cheat on the heroine)—though I don’t want them to hate with a vengeance. What I want is for readers to see him as he is, as we all are, flawed, but with many redeeming qualities.
To accomplish this precarious balance, I spent the first third of the novel making him a likable character, and I gave him an adorable rescue dog that he cares a lot about. Gabe’s relationship with his dog, Virgil, puts his humanity on full display. It lets us see a complex man, one who’s a nurturer, unselfish, and loving. I hope that this is enough for readers to eventually forgive him.
Because I’m more of a pantser than a plotter, I allow my characters a great deal of freedom, and I never know exactly where they’re going to take the story. Sometimes they behave predictably, following familiar patterns, and at other times, they surprise me. But as long as they show me who they really are, warts and all, I fall in love with them over and over, and I hope you will too.
She invites you to visit their beloved Meadows Shore, nestled in the charming seaside town of Fair Harbor, where you’ll enjoy love, laughter, loyalty, and an abundance of mouth-watering food, Portuguese style.
After being a confirmed city-girl for more than thirty-five years, Eva moved to beautiful western Massachusetts in 2014. There, she found herself living in the woods with no job, no friends (unless you count the turkeys, deer, and coyotes roaming the backyard), and no children underfoot, wondering what on earth she’d been thinking. But as it turned out, it was the perfect setting to take all those yarns spinning in her head and weave them into a romantic tale.
When she’s not writing, trying to squeeze information out of her tight-lipped sons or playing with the two cutest dogs you’ve ever seen, Eva’s creating chapters in her own love story.
