BLURB:

Discredited journalist Ella Jerome isn't thrilled about working at Adelaide's fanciful tabloid The Informer. So when zoologist Adam Lowell seeks her help in finding his missing cousin, she's cynical of his claim a monster lurks near the Church of the Resurrection. The trouble is, solving the gruesome case could be her best shot at restoring her shredded reputation.

With her old instincts resurfacing, Ella combs the Port for clues. Experience tells her the only monsters are the human variety, and the bloodied stonemason certainly raises her suspicions. But when her investigation turns up everything from petrified remains to the headless carving of a dragon, the truth threatens to steal both her sanity and the man she's falling for.

After all, gargoyles can't be anything other than harmless stone. Or can they?

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

Romain found Clotaire the Second, King of all Franks, entertaining a baron in the great hall. The pair reclined on benches, a half-eaten plate of fruit on a low table between them. The King waved him forward. His long locks, already white from the tribulations of his reign, brushed slices of apple as he selected a segment of orange.

“I cannot help but recall you give sound advice,” the King said when he had swallowed the fruit. “Sit, sit. Ratold brings news of Rouen.”

The plump baron folded his arms inside his wide sleeves as he watched Romain take the seat opposite, grudgingly vacated by men high in the King’s esteem. Romain remained stiff, aware his simple brown robe proclaimed the gulf in their standing for all the court to see.

“Rouen,” Romain echoed. The name brought a sense of impending doom. He made the sign of the cross.

The King selected a plum, leaned back, and lifted a foot to the edge of the table, a curious arch to his brow. “Tell your tale,” he said to the Baron, his eyes plastered to Romain. Red juice trickled down his chin as he bit the fruit.

The baron cleared his throat. “My wife’s family brings dire tidings,” he began, and delivered the news Romain had been dreading. “What else could they do but flee? They have arrived requesting safe lodging, but Heaven knows I cannot afford to support the lot of them. The townsfolk tell the only way to placate the dragon is with human sacrifice. The town is decimated,” he concluded.

“This creature cannot be the creation of God,” Clotaire said.

The baron shook his head. “They say it is flesh and bone, spawn of the devil, and nothing man may defeat.”

“I fear it is the creation of man.”

The King gave Romain a curious look. Whispers and gasps travelled the length of the hall. Young men were no doubt imagining themselves as revered heroes, besting a beast an entire town could not conquer.

“Your advice then, Romain. I will not have such a devil control my kingdom. You have read books. How can we triumph over it?”

“Perhaps we can,” he said quietly, and young and old murmured over his interpretation of the King’s question.

AUTHOR BIO:

Tia Reed loves nothing better than burying her nose in a story of her own imagining, cuddling her bossy cat and rescuing chewed pillows from her hyperactive dog. She takes every opportunity to do all three when she is not teaching English as a second language. Her other hobbies usually take a back seat but include trying to tame her beast of a garden, hiking and travelling. The latter has thrown her many interesting, sometimes hair-raising experiences, which she loves twisting into stories. She was born in Malta, but lives in Adelaide, Australia.

  1. Thank you for hosting me. The excerpt here doesn't feature my heroine, but she is brunette and in my biased opinion fabulous too (you wouldn't catch me doing half the things she does).

  2. If you could be anyone for one day, who would you be and why?

    1. This is a difficult question! I've never really thought about it, but it would have to be a character from a novel and someone with magic. Imagine all the fun. Being Hermione from Harry Potter would be make for an interesting day, even if it was just a day attending Hogwarts. Then again, if I got to be J.K. Rowling I could have some wonderful insights into writing bestsellers! Now if we really could truly be anyone else, it would preclude us being ourselves, which would mean we actually lose out on having the experience of being someone else. There might be a sci-fi short story somewhere in that.
