BLURB:

When Aubrey Thomas, a phobic travel writer, must chose between jumping to what she considerers certain death from a skydiving static line or sinking even deeper into debt in the unemployment line, she scrambles to find someone—anyone!—who can help her overcome her debilitating fear of heights. Enter John Trelawney, a charming window washer who thinks nothing of dangling by a cable fifty stories up and claims he can cure her. Everything about John makes Aubrey nervous... including the way her heart kicks into overdrive whenever he's around. But, at the end of her rope, she takes him up on his offer. Can he really help her get over her fear of heights? Or will Aubrey find herself free falling...possibly even in love with him?

EXCERPT TWO:

"Where to now?" Aubrey asked as she wadded up what remained of her lunch and deposited it in a nearby trash can.

"You'll find out when we get there."

So juvenile.

John then headed for the exit. With the midday sun rising higher in the sky, the lakefront began to toast. So did her cheeks when she watched him tug off his sweatshirt as he walked. The white fitted T-shirt he had on underneath left little to her imagination.

A tumble of excitement, exasperation, lust, and dread welled up in her as she joined him.

"You're like a kid in a man's body, you know that?"

An incredibly hot man's body.

He stopped and faced her. "And did you know that most people who suffer from phobias have a hyper-developed need for control?"

"Are you implying that I'm a control freak?"

He chuckled. "No, I'm not implying it. I'm stating it, rather explicitly."

She pointed at him. "There. You did it again."

"What?"

She quoted back what he had just said. "Who talks like that?"

He narrowed his eyes. "Well-read adults?"

Of which you seem to be neither.

She kept walking.

"What are you getting so huffy about?" with another of his penetrating stares.

After a moment of silent reflection, she replied, "I don't like not knowing where I'm going."

At this, he held out his hands as they walked along. "Did I call it, or did I call it?"

She turned and grumbled, "Jackass."

GUEST POST:

Describe Your Writing Space

Barbara's Favorite Writing Spot
Out of all the places in my house I chose to write, I picked the kitchen table. It’s not glamorous or secluded and it’s definitely not quiet. So why did I pick it?

That’s a very good question. It’s one I ask myself. Frequently.

My boys (husband included) are always popping in, foolishly wondering what’s for dinner (or lunch or breakfast). When they see me perched on my stool, gazed fixed on the glowing screen of my laptop and hear the click of the keys as I work feverishly to up my word count, they know - if they want to eat, they’ve got to make or bake it themselves.

Parking myself smack in the middle of the busiest room in my house has its advantages. I can know what’s happening with everyone without having to come downstairs to find out why it’s so quiet, what is burning on the stove or if there’s any coffee left. All I have to do is raise my gaze from my laptop.

Does this make mean I’m lazy? On the contrary. The other perk about parking myself in the kitchen is that the table – solid and square – is high enough that I can stand while I write. I do this frequently to get the creative juices flowing. And to keep our cat from jumping on my back so she can sit on my shoulder, silently assessing my work. While it startles me when she does this, I don’t mind the company. Except when she decides to pace across my keyboard.

My kitchen has two windows. One over the kitchen sink, which affords a lovely view of our backyard, and one on the back door. When I am on deadline, my husband will sometimes take my boys away for the day – to visit relatives in the city, go to downstate cross-country meets, or to run errands. When they get back, they’re surprised to find that I’ve barely moved and I’m surprised to find that hours, sometimes an entire day has passed.

While it’s in dire need of a redo, I can’t imagine writing in any other room. Maybe they’d feel a little too claustrophobic for my liking.  Maybe I like being able to do plies while I write. Whatever the reason, I can’t imagine parking myself anywhere else.
